Western Civilization and its downward spiral

Merriam-Webster has announced its word of the year for 2007 and the winner is...

w00t?

Seriously. Woot. This isn't a word, it's a... I don't know what the fsck it is but woot isn't really a word. This link also shows the others that were in the running for word of the year, which include "facebook" at number 2.

My question is...is this possibly indicative of some sort of changing of the guard in pop culture where the nerd becomes king? Are we entering into the guilded age of geekdom where the pocket protector is king and it's acceptable for people to come up with stupid alliterations like guilded age of geekdom? Or is it simply that an internet vote for the word of the year isn't exactly a representative sample of the nation as a whole?

I think the downfall of western civilization has to do with obsession with celebrities, and pop culture. It's getting a little ridiculous. I'm currently reading a book by Greg Easterbrook (he now writes for ESPN), the book is called "The Progress Paradox: How Life Gets Better While People Feel Worse" and it's pretty awesome. It pretty much talks about how life has changed in the last 50 years (everyone has access to shelter, education, healthcare, food, and pretty much everything else we can think of) and we still want more. It sounds like a depressing book but it's really good. It really puts things in perspective.
