Lookin' for a tip about handheld PDA's...

Right now I am highly considering the Blackberry 8830.

Other options are...

The Blackberry Pearl 8130

The Moto Q

The Moto Q 9c

The Palm Treo 755p

Tthe Palm Centro

...

The HTC Mogul (slide-out QWERTY keyboard) is also an option but I have heard that it is riddled with major problems.

Just wondering if anybody out there had experience w/ any of these particular devices, and if there were any tips to be offered up.

Thanks!

I like that the Pearl has a camera, whereas no other Blackberry does, but I do NOT like the smaller screen for web/e-mail/SprintTV use, and I'm not wild about the "double tap" key system (vs QWERTY), since I *do* plan to use it somewhat extensively for e-mail.

Are there some other advantages to the Pearl that I am unaware of?

...well, I've come to this: Sprint customer service, technical support, and sales reps all have absolutely no idea about the products they sell.

...

I knew that the Blackberry 8830 could NOT support SprintTV, and that the Pearl COULD.

A sales rep convinced me otherwise.

A customer service person then CONTINUED to insist the 8830 could use SprintTV.

Finally, the 3rd tech support specialist I spoke too confirmed that the 8830 is not capable of supporting SprintTV.

WTF is goin on at that company? Their service has ALWAYS been atrocious, but I was unaware that they made no attempt as a corporation to educate their employees about their products, services, and how they match up.

Ugh.

I'd go with the The Palm Treo 755p. I had the Treo 650 a while back and it was the best phone I ever had. The only thing that sucks is the battery, it will last 2 hours if you use it constantly.

With all these phones the downside is the service plans, especially with internet access, if you want unlimited access with some decent minutes your gonna wind paying at least $100 a month.

Yeah I'm familiar w/ all the plans at this point...

...and since I've played with both for extended amounts of time now - I think I am actually leaning further in the direction of the Balckerry 8130 Pearl, rather than the full-size 8830. The 8830 has more of the features attractive to the "big business" types, but the Pearl seems geared slightly more to Joe Consumer. While I am trapped somewhere in the shadowy world between those two categories... the availability of SprintTV and the inclusion of a camera/video phone on it may sell me the Pearl 8130 over the "World Edition" 8830.

As for the Treo - I have zero experience w/ Palm products since about the year 2000. What advantages would you say Palm offers over RIM (the maker of the Blackberry line)?

Well, they both have a 1.3 MP camera, the Pearl has a slightly faster processor 312mhz to 300mhz. The Pearl has a slight more internal memory, 64 dedicated compared to 60 MB. The Palm uses micro SD memory and the Pearl uses mini(I don't know what's the difference, my old palm used regular SD) The Palm gets 3.5 hrs talk time and the Pearl gets 2.5hrs. I know the Palm has a touchscreen, I'm not sure if the Pearl does. The Palm uses Windows Mobile 6 Professional, which is great, they have a ton apps available. The Pearl uses something called BlackBerry Handheld Software, which I know nothing about.

I guess it's user preference, the specs are pretty much equal, look into the OS the Pearl uses and see if it's customizable as much as Windows mobile.

Happy phoning!!

Well, here I am again. :)

I never ended up making the upgrade before. But now - at last - it is time.

I actually need to make the leap into the PDA/Smartphone world.

After witnessing a few various ones in action, I am actually leaning toward a Windows-based Palm product now, rather than RIM's Blackberry products.

Looking at the Treo 755p and the Treo 700wx, or the Centro.

Any suggestions? Any kind of suggestions are welcome, I'd like to try to make the most educated choice.

Thanks for the help, KC. Those guys are obviously very knowledgable... but they might be a little too specific to help me at this stage... [sigh]... I don't want to have to trust the advice of a salesperson. :)

12000 clock cycles per second is a huge improvement, especially when the scale is so small, from 312 to 300. You'll notice it. If you are an in between, and not devoted to Sprint, may I say the iPhone is a great in between, considering you're not Mr. Big Business and not Joe Schmo. Also the double tap is quite confusing from my use with it. An HTC Touch maybe? I'm more of a fan of the HTC line, it's quite nice.

Well, I ended up purchasing the Palm Treo 755p today.

Obviously I have a lot to learn about using it, but I love the device, and the desktop software than you can sync w/ the phone (think iTunes-style) is EXCELLENT.

This is exactly what I was hoping for.

I made sure to buy the monthy-insurance, since I've heard that the Windows platform (and dropping it on the floor) has a tendency to create issues, but the backups the desktop software makes on my home PC should make getting back to where I need to be a lot simpler than w/ other units.

I think I'm happy with the choice I made.

(Famous last words, I know).

Look for this thread a week or 2 from now, when I begin bitching endlessly about how bad this thing sucks.
