nutts55
Here is my best attempt at trying to get a tangible stat for throwing speed, more so the speed to get the ball to its destination. Since we don't have guns on shortstops and part of this is getting rid of the ball as well as throw speed. The Formula I used was based on the best stats I could get of ESPN, which wasn't much. (Assists+Double plays)/( Ground Balls in Field Zone - Errors - Put outs). Ground Balls in fielding zone is (Total Chances / Zone Rating) - Put outs. If I had access to Stats billions of different stats I think I could refine it. knowing actual ground balls in zone. My thinking would be that assists show how many batters are thrown out is a good measure of his arm speed compared to the number of balls he fielded, thinking that Players with a higher % have better arms. I think Double plays warrant extra value but cannot figure out if I want a modifer added to it to decrease its value. Put outs require no throwing so I tried to eliminate them from the rating. I know eckstein has a weak arm, but he gets rid of the ball fast. I don't know if he is number 16. Also consider jeter a moot topic, too many conflicting opinions. BigPaPa
its impossible to rate arms mathematically without a radar gun reading assists can relate to throwing speed but Omar vizquel is nto known as a strong armed shortstop he just gets to the ball fast and get the ball off fast. sam with ekstein. These ratings are highly flawed,
nutts55
thats is what I'm trying to determine, I know we cant get speed of his arm, but I'm attempting to determine the fastest all around w/ arm speed and ability to get rid of the ball. That's what I'm trying to get at. For the purpose of a video game I think since there is no rating for quick release, I figured it was worth a shot. BigPaPa
Many scouts consider Scott Rolen and Rafi Furcal The strongest Infeild arms in the game and Ichiro, Vlad and Delmon young the strongest outfeild arms. The best all around infield arm is a less exact science but some think A-Rod has the most reliable arm for both accuracy and power.
nutts55
I heard that, actually they say vlad has declined due to wear and tear, I'm just trying to get a sense of order to the rest of the SS postion. Note: this would not work to rate at different positions as throwing distance changes. You can only rate w/ this at each position
JP_Frost
scouting reports are the best way to determine arm strength for fielders. Troy Tulowitzki has an absolute cannon, same goes for Brandon Inge.
