THIS HAS MAJOR SPOILERS IF YOU DONT WANT TO KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THIS MOVIE THEN DONT READ!!!!!!!!

Ok so how should i start this off. Well for one thing the monste is a IDK WTF it is not even close to a godzilla looking monster. The whole movie is based on a video camera(not crappy quality camera) The movie is super short(hour and 24). The Monster is probably shown "fully" for about a total of 45 seconds in this movie. While the city of NYC is getting wrecked by this monster the whole time The man(robert Hawkins) and his 3 other friends(survivors from the party you see in the trailer) are trying to make there way thru the city and get to the building where his ex girlfriend is at to save her(yes i know its f***ing stupid) After they go and save her theres about 10 minutes left in this movie and in th elast 10 minutes you get to actually get to see the monster and its whole body basically(throughout the movie you mostly just see parts of the monster) There is this dude in the movie*one of the 3 survivors) who is hella funny during this he is the guy recording the whole movie. If it wasnt for him being funny this movie would have probably made people walk out of the movie theatre. It was a good movie when your watching it but the way it ends and the fact that basically this movie was about a monster destroying the city but lets focus more on this guy trying to save his ex girlfriend and only show the alien 5hit for only a total of 45 seconds. At the end of the movie Robert Hawkins and his ex girl are under a bridge in central park and there recording there last words(citeing there names and lil bit of info) and then the Army decided to do a hammer down(basically destroy the city to prevent the spread of the monster and the little spider creatures it literally crapped out.)all in all you will most likly still watch the movie of course but i would save my money and watch the matinee for cheap. I recored the monster on my phone but my crappy phone cant send the vid to my email.

Couldn't disagree more with the above review. If you go into the movie expecting one thing, and this movie gives you another, I can see where some dissapointment could occur... but...

...This move is all about tackling the topic of monster-attacks-New-York, which has been done ad nauseum in a new and fresh way.

It's done very well, and since it's Blair Witch style presentation dictates that EVERY spec of footage has to come from the notional "video camera" that these people were carrying, only that footage can be shown in the movie.

And, I am completely tired of the special effects blockbusters that just spend $100 million on showing crazy sh1t happening for 2 hours...

...This movie did exactly what I personally think the directed wanted it to: Every time the monster was shown, it left me saying "NOOO! Show it for a few more seconds... focus the camera a little better... back up! Show it again!"

Basically: It left me wanting more. Like a REAL suspense/thriller movie is supposed to. I think this movie accomplished it's goal quite well, and it was surprisingly well done.

Obviously, everyone is entitled to their own opinions, but I just wanted to offer up an opposing viewpoint to the above review.

This isn't a "stare at the CGI amazingness" extravaganza, like Transformers. There's plenty of CGI and crazy action, but the "monster" is left largely to the imagination, like thrillers of old. I, for one, loved it.

i wasnt looking for CGI and i doubt many of the people who went to see this movie did but the movie was just him running his way to get to this girl. Like the many people in the theatre who booed at the end twice!(i saw it two times today) They probably wanted to know where this thing came from and wtf happened at the end...Is it still alive is Robert Hawkins still alive(lol probably not) but i want to know the backstory to this monster.

Like I said, if you go in expecting a "usual" movie, you might be dissapointed...

...but this movie is basically presented as a piece of "evidence" that the audience is somehow privvy to. Once piece of data that is probably part of a mountain that the government has classified about this incident.

There can not be "backstory," since this was a single recording of people who were caught in the crossfire, so to speak.

And YET - they still provided a tiny bit of "backstory" - if you pay attention, at the VERY END, when you see the over-written recording of the couple on the pier/ferris-wheel, in the background, you see a large object fall from the sky and into the water - clarifying that the "monster" is an alien that came from above.

Also - after the credit roll is complete, there is a moment of recorded static and a garbled transmission, likely meant to be a final moment of recording on the severely damaged camera...

if you reverse the audio and play it forewards it says "It is still alive."

Thus, the door is left open for a sequel, where I'm sure more details would be revealed.

I've heard this movie described as an hour and a half long trailer for the sequel - that might be true - but I loved it.

It's not really a "fireball"... it's more of a shadowy (but BIG) object, out to sea in the background.

And if you want me to be honest: I didn't catch it the first time either - my girlfriend did. I "snuck" back in to the last few minutes of the movie at the next showing to see it for myself. :lmao:

(Good thing I had shopping to do in the area, or else I would've had to make a SPECIAL trip to the theater - )

I really enjoyed this movie. It lived up to my expectations.

It wasn't your typical monster movie, hell it really wasn't even about the monster. It was about Robert Hawkins trying to save the girl he loved, it just so happened it was during a monster movie.

I have read many reviews where people are complaining that we learn nothing about the monsters back story. Well, how the heck are we supposed too?

This movie takes place from the point of view of Hawkins, Hud, Marlena, and Robert's brother's girlfriend (Don't remember her name). It's filmed by their video camera, how the heck are they going to know any of the monster's back story.

This movie was very, very well down, for what it was.

I wish I would have noticed the thing going into the water at the end. I was paying to much attention to Robert's girlfriend, she was stunning.

There were scenes in this movie, (the Cloud Of Dust) for instance, that were so believable, that I can only imagine that was what 9/11 was like when the cloud of dust rose from the falling towers. It was rough to watch at parts, because I watched, like many, hours and hours of 9/11, and there were scenes just like the video of that.

An amazing movie, a good start to films in 2008.

I'm skimming to avoid spoilers.

Anyone else see this and like/dislike it? I don't want to read why because it may ruin it for me. Just post if you like or dislike it for people like me.

you know what happened that pissed me off since you mention 9/11. The people were taking pictured of the Statue of Liberty's head while theres a monster attack going on, and when the cloud of smoke is coming the people just stand there until the smoke hits them in the face then they decide to run, anyways people wanted a backstory because it was possible for a backstory. It was a recording from a camera yes but it wasnt live it was in the governments hands at the time just like it says in the begining before the camera was even turned on.

Are you kidding me? I missed all that! I never stay all the way through the credits so I read about that last part about them whispering after I got home from the movie. But I can't believe I missed the thing dropping in the water. So it was on the very last part after the two supposedly got blown up under the bridge? Where they were on the train saying how good a day it was? I might have to go see it again just to get those little nuggets.

Beth and Lily were extremely freaking hot btw.

I really liked the movie on the whole. Really well done. The running hand held did get to me sometimes ala Blair Witch but I still enjoyed it. I would be interested in a sequel. Reading around, the rumor is that if there is a sequel it will be during the same time frame but from a different perspective. Sounds interesting but I think a lot of the shock value will be lost since you already know whats happening.

Good movie!

This movie is like no other. It is awesome. I heard a rumor that there might be a sequel like from someone else's perspective that day. The thing isn't a fireball, people thing it's like a satellite or something like that and that's what woke up the monster. This website as some cool stuff. It doesn't really give much away from the movie I think but just to be safe I would wait to look at it until you've seen it. http://cloverfieldclues.blogspot.com/

There better be a sequel to tell me what the hell that "thing" was. I mean, I loved the special effects, but the storyline focused mainly on the characters, while the promos prepared you for a movie all about the monster. Also, I have a lot of questions that should have been answered before the ending. If they performed Operation Hammerdown, how are the monster and the video still intact? Plus, What ever happened to Lily in that first chopper? This movie goes to prove that "Science-Fiction" has nothing to do with science.

ok this movie was very good imo. people who dont like it dont appreciate movies... like i love how they had the camcorder effect. how many movies have that? i think that one scary witch movie did or w/e. and the shaky camera was fine if you play video games because then you are used to it. i loved the jokes like... have you ever heard of superman?... garlfield? :) .... and what was that? a very terrible thing! lmao. and i have a feeling that the sequel will probably show more about the monster and its origins... but did anyone notice the splash in the water in the last carnival scene? that was probably the monster falling into the ocean from the sky.... look for it in the last scene. overall i loved the movie. i didnt care that it wasnt a happy ending or it didnt show the monster's orgin. idc it was original.
