paulw
Well, for the last couple of months I've been finding every possible thing I can about the 1956 season. My research has been greatly bolstered as Retrosheet now has all of the play by play data availabe. The box scores are there now with all the starting lineups used. Lots of better fielding data also to be plugged into Win Shares formulas. I've been updating rosters and ratings in this regard - for my own personal use if nothing else - plus this is A LOT of fun. I've been using *career* splits for all of the players as this is generally more reliable data. It's been fun to see who are the big (and little or even reverse) platoon players. This is my favorite era and really an interesting season. I'll probably be working on this for at least another month or so. Just thought I'd tell you guys what I'm up to. As long as no new PC game becomes available I'm still working on MVP. Huge the thanks to everyone who put the original '56 Mod together!!!
HardcoreLegend
So what you are saying is that retrosheets did the research and added even more info? I wonder how long before Baseball-Reference.com has the logs up.
paulw
Yup. Retrosheet has now pretty much the full data. This should go to Baseball-Reference.com fairly quickly (I hope).
krawhitham
Play by play = hitting splits = a lot of roster work is that correct?
paulw
A lot of fun! They've already run all the batting splits. I just enter the splits into a spreadsheet like the one I sent you and then move this data through MVPEdit. Baseball-reference will have all the batting order combinations listed - hopefully fairly soon. It's sooo cool. Here's a nice sample box. Man they sure have the info... Jim825
I really could have used this when I was creating the batting orders in the '56 rosters. I used the split data on retrosheet.org to create the batting orders for the '78 mod. At some point, I may have to go back and adjust them in my rosters and release a '56 mod update. stecropper
PaulW - Do I recall correctly ? Weren't you working on a '50s set of rosters awhile back for your personal use ....... I think either '51 or '54 ....... if so and you have finished them I certainly would be interested in getting your MVPEdit .mbe file for that set. Thanks for bringing the above to our attention --- Interesting stuff indeed ! Don
paulw
Don-I have my "greatest hits of the '50's" rosters but these have become fairly outdated. I keep working on my formulas and have been applying all the latest stuff - and testing it - on '56. I have a rather complex spreadsheet right now - I sent it to krawhitman - that I use for ratings. I then make platoon adjustments based on career OPS handedness (<---spelling??) ratios. I have some other rather messy spreadsheets for fielding. None of it is put together well enough for releasing. Believe it or not I can apply a lot of this stuff to work - except there it's on Education data.
paulw
A just for fun "interesting" finding: Aparicio seems to have been batting 8th against righties and leadoff against lefties. He did have some pretty big career (and season) splits vs. left and right. In '56 he had a .578 OPS vs. righties and .766 vs. lefties. I have him 73 contact, 48 power vs. left and 64/39 vs. right. Rivera was leading off at least some of the games against righties. I need to look a bit more.
paulw
One more. This is a lineup I always wondered about. What do you do when most of your team is power hitters like the '56 Reds? I've thought about the batting order for years and years on this team and tried some guesses based on runs scored and RBI. I've looked at a stretch of about 15 games in July and here's what seems most typical (there is no platooning being used during this stretch): Temple Post Bell Kluzewski Robinson Bailey Jablonski McMillan Pitcher
