Okay, so I downloaded some file earlier in the day on my vista laptop and I put it on my desktop. Now, every time I access the desktop (with the little desktop shortcut button next to the start button),

"Windows Explorer has stopped working"

shows up and a few seconds later, it says that

"Windows Explorer is restarting..."

before going to the first message again, in an infinite loop. So I changed into my admin account and accessed the desktop of my normal account from there, and when I try to delete the file, it says that Windows Explorer has stopped working again, but this time, only once. I've tried everything to delete it, but I can't seem to do it and when I try to look at its properties or something or move its location, it does the same thing and freezes. so I'm 99% sure that it's some kind of malware or something. Can anyone help? :headache:

First of all, what's the file? Video, text file, ZIP file, MP3? A file name might be useful.

Try deleting it from the command prompt. Open a new window by going to Start and typing cmd in the search box, then navigate to your desktop using the cd command, then use "del filename.ext" to try to delete the file. If you get an error, post it. If not, it should be gone.

Also, try deleting it in Safe Mode.

I don't run Vista (Linux all the way & XP for games), but In addition to MarkB's suggestions:

Did you try changing the ownership of the file in Normal Mode??

Make sure to change the ownership of the file and also select the option to change the ownership of everything inside that folder... Another way would be turning off UAC (User account protection) and then attempt to delete the file... Of course make sure to change the ownership first...

And if none of that doesn't work for you, you may need to look into getting a program something like HijackThis or Pocket Killbox. You can google both & be careful when using either one.

*Also might want to invest in a good firewall/anti-virus software. And stay away from those shady sites.
