It's time for better organization amongst other things

I'm not sure what the deal is, but a lot of you that have the understanding and knowhow to program and get this game running in new ways are in need of some better help for those who aren't programmers. I really like what has been done to this game, but can't all the things be done in a more organized and useful manner? Isn't there a way to release the new seasons as simple installations without having to understand how to use each little program. I've been trying for a long time to get old players that have been made into new rosters etc... Unfortunately it's easier said than done. It's worked at times and not other times. I mean you could sell your abilities. I, for one would pay individuals that would do the work for me and then all I got to do is intall and play. I'm personally not interested in figuring out how to make portraits, cyberfaces and have to move around all the files to get those things to pop up in the game when I want to play. I just want it to work. I know I'm not alone. At least for the love of god, will someone post one clear and concise step by step from start to finish on one page of how to go from point a to point b. Error message occur, blah..blah. I's defeating and tiresome and then who the hell wants to bother anymore. You guys no how to do this stuff. Start offering services for money.

Dude. You and all the other whining, complaining, brats need to learn how to follow a Read Me files instructions. I have NEVER had a problem with a mod here, let alone any total conversions, when i followed the directions. Anytime I got errors is when i screwed something up.

Be more damn respectful to these guys. If i was one of them i just wouldnt release a damned thing. How come you think you can just show up like alot of you do, only to complain, download stuff and leave. You even have Total Installer Thingy FFS. It does alot fo the work for you, but your f'ing complaining.

I dont know, Im not a modder, and Im too poor with college to pay donations. But god help me I would never say anything negative towards these guys for what they do. Since I have no knowledge of modding cybers, stadiums, and datafiles, i actually tried to lend help into the PBP announcer project. Wish it didnt die before i tried to help though.

So from that, im telling you to go and try and help. Try and learn how to fix things yourself since you obviously do not wanna read the instructions, and QUIT COMPLAINING!

It seems to me that you are having a bit of trouble installing the total conversion mods. Maybe the single season mods or Total Classics. It doesn't matter because both of them are installed in the same manner.

There's no way we can install your game for you unless we are physically at your computer doing it for you. The readme files in each one of these mods are very good. You have to read them and follow them. You are making the installation of one of these season mods to be much harder than it really is.

I understand the overall sentiment of the complaint, HOWEVER, what you need to understand, is this: You are at a site that modifies an existing baseball game. This game is from 2004. Yes, the steps and overwhelming (at times) number of files are troublesome, but they are FREE, and what is to be expected from a group of non-paid, non-corporate individuals. Personally, I'm pretty impressed with the volume and downright creativity of work to be culled from this site. If you want to help, and you don't know how to mod, then donate some bucks to the site. If you think you should receive something specifically for your donation, then maybe you should consider buying the latest baseball game available at Electronics Boutique.

You need to understand that these guys aren't working for a large, organized company with an unlimited budget. They do this, because they LOVE MVP 2005, and most of them love sharing their hard work.

Try to help them out.

Word to all except the emotion first guy, Kayxero. Thanks for understanding. I understand everyone's position. Respect for all the hard work. Kayxero, relax baby. Perception is reality. Your reality seems a little strenuous. I just wish things were easier. Clearly it's due to the fact that the game creators don't make it easy to begin with. Maybe if they cared so much to limit it, they'd fight for their right to have the liscense to keep making MVP. Thanks modders. Great work. If only the doors were wide open.

Speaking as a modder, and not as a moderator or representative of the site here, I say please get real. I've spent at least a hundred hours over the last month working on something, and you complain because you can't take 10 seconds to read a file correctly.

And if that's not enough, you decide to also ignore and impugne a massive community who is willing to help with any measure of problems, and the accumulated knowledge of a half-decade of mods in our forums.

I am constantly amazed not at the number of ungrateful people who frequent our forums, but that modders like myself bother to continue at all. The loss of Pirate, hyman, Y2K and dozens of other great modders prove that it's a struggle.

Most of the Total Classics mods (Total Classics 8 Gold, Total Classics 1956, Total Classics 1964, Total Classics 1978) include detailed step by step instructions (with pictures!) on how to install them. I know this because I wrote them.

Not only that, they include instructions on how to install the mod two different ways - either with the automated installer, or manually, with VERY detailed instructions telling you exactly which folder to copy the files to.

To make things even easier, I've even used rather clever names for these instructions (TC_1964_Installation_Instructions.doc, TC_1956_Installation_Instructions.doc, etc.). It shouldn't be too hard to tell what these files are when you look at their names.

Also, what you are asking for (one clear and concise step by step from start to finish on one page of how to go from point a to point b.) is not possible, unless you want someone to use a font so small that you need a magnifying glass to read it. For some of these major mods, one page will never cut it.

In addition, there are so many different types of mods that no one set of instructions will work for every mod.

As far as charging for my services, I'll gladly quit my job to become your personal mod installer. It will only cost you $150,000 per year, plus traveling expenses and meals. It might seem a bit expensive, but I've got a family to feed, and you wouldn't have to go anywhere near a mod file before it's installed.

Of course, you could just read the instructions included with each mod and save yourself a boatload of money each year. It's your choice......

Can't a guy just vent sometimes without the people who put hard work into it taking a small little forum topic as a personal attack on their time? I'm trying to personalize this game to my liking. I know how to do most everything needed to get this to work for me. So, without certain people like me, there'd be no reason for this site in the first place. I actually enjoy modding the game to me preferences, but sometimes things don't go right. It's not hard to install the things with the instructions. But, laying that over the top of what you've already modified is another story. touchy touchy, you people. Like everyone involved in here doesn't spend hours and hours on this and other things. You have to be able to take constructive critisism. Get a grip and go for a hike or something.

Jim825, I respect that. No, I won't be hiring you to be my personal modder, but thanks. Wouldn't that be nice though. You make a nice salary there.

Honestly, I've got more responses to this than I've got to my questions in the past. Perhaps, instead of re-venting you guys could check out some of the more interesting requests. Thanks for eveything. I figured as much.

Grown *** man to grown *** man... how do you get those little pictures of older players to go right in as a portrait? Are they large? Scanned pictures? Also, is there a way to get personal requests on players? One I want is Pat Listach. Don't ask me why, I just want to plug him in. I got a couple of others too. But I'll just wait and see if anyone every helps me with him.

Carry on wit yo bad selvz.

If you're having a problem installing something, just ask (or search the forums). Everybody has gotten frustrated at times, but you'll have a much better chance of getting people to help if you are more specific in stating the problem you are having. You know that old expression, "You can catch a lot more flies with honey than with vinegar"? It applies to these forums as well.

Your criticism, which you view as constructive, is just the opposite since you seem to be complaining about the intallation of all mods in general, rather than offering constructive ideas on how to make a specific mod easier to install.

I've dealt with a lot worse than your comments on some of my mods, as have many other modders, so I've developed a pretty thick skin over the years and have learned to distinguish between the comments that I think will help me and those that won't.

As far as going for a hike, it's dark. cold and rainy here right now, so perhaps I'll wait until tomorrow when it's supposed be warmer and drier.

Plus DJ you have to look at it like this. With all the crap these guys put up with, you had to know this thread does not help. Sorry I came off the way I did, but this thread irked me the wrong way. It is stuff like this and the others in the MVP 08 thread that make me think one by one modders will leave. As some have left, and soon we may have nothing. It doesn't take much before someone is fed up. I just never want to see that. I try to be appreciative as possible, and i know you appreciate their work as well.

Anyways I apologize for my earlier rant. It could have been worded differently.

That $150,000 isn't my current salary. I thought it just sounded like a good figure to go for. :)

Portraits need to be .bmp files with a size of 128 x 128 pixels with a color depth of 24 bits. As my good deed for the day, I've created a Listach portrait for you and attached it to this post. The file Pat_Listach.bmp is inside the file Pat_Listach.rar. For some reason, I can't attach a .bmp file to a post. Just open the .RAR file with WinRAR and extract the .bmp file.

The portrait can then be assigned to Pat Listach in your rosters using MVPEdit. Here's how:

1. Open up your rosters with MVPEdit

2. On the main menubar, click on Tools -> Options

3. On the left hand pane, select your Data folder and in the right pane, click on "Show Player Portrait"

4. Click the OK button.

5. Find Pat Listach in your rosters.

6. On the Player tab, modify the "Audio/Photo" field to use an unused ID (or select an existing one if you don't mind changing the photo).

7. In the photo window on the right, right click on the portrait (or the "No picture found" text if no portrait exists).

8. When the "Update Photo" window shows up, click on "New Picture".

9. A window will popup with the title "Select 128x128 24-Bit BMP Image for Portrait". Find your folder that contains your Listach photo (in .bmp format).

10. Double click on the .bmp file (or single click on it and the click the "Open" button). The photo will appear in the "Update Photo" window.

11. Click on the OK button. You will now see the photo in the player portrait window on the right side of the screen. This means that the photo has been stored in your data frontend portrait.big file.

12. You must now export your rosters so that the audio / photo ID that you selected (if you changed it) remains with the player. If you changed the ID but do not export your rosters, you will not see the proper portrait in the game. If you did not change the audio / photo ID you don't have to export your rosters.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

I appreciate that. If you ever get a cyberface or know someone who does, let me know. Sorry about the razzle. Just still get frustrated with computers at times. Glad you can rationalize temper. Thanks again.

Despite all the controversy that has been going on in this thread, I think there's an excellent underlying point to DJAelbi's post. I've been around here long enough to know how the game works, but for guys who are (relatively) new to this site the wonderful world of modding can be pretty frustrating. Don't get me wrong, I'm not the ultimate master when it comes to modding, but I know the basic principles that govern this game.

Anyway, I've been planning on writing a short summary on these principles for quite some time now. It will be designed as a prestage to MarkB's Big, nasty, all-encompassing FAQ list. Therefore, I won't go into detail on how to mod certain things, but concentrate on the overall picture. Since I'm currently on vacation, i might release the summary sometime this week.

Not a bad idea at all. I know this would be very helpful.
