ehhh
I've owned this game for over four years now and it's about time I ask some other people about their pitching strategy. I am using MD's datafile and Hoop27's All-Star sliders. In this game I get shelled with every power pitcher I use. When Clemens was on the Yankees I'd get destroyed with him. Rivera? I'm lucky if I can keep his ERA under 5.00 in a dynasty. Wang? Every other start is like the '07 ALCS. I succumb to the, "the harder I throw, the farther it goes" way of life. Mike Mussina's 85 MPH fastball rarely gets hit out of the ballpark but Chamberlain's 98 MPH heat gets sent into the stands regularly, same with Mo's cutter. When I'm pitching, I usually go back with the meter to where it's red, I do not fill the meter on every pitch. The only time I do that is when I'm ahead in the count going for a K. In terms of strategy, I stay low-and-away with every pitcher I use. I cannot come inside frequently, the CPU will crush it even if I throw a perfect pitch on the black. I had an AB against Edgar Renteria last night with Joba Chamblerain where I threw him 8 straight pitches low-and-away and then on 3-2 I came up and in, full power fastball, 98 MPH and he crushes it into the seats. This happens regularly with guys like Joba, Wang and Mo. I have to pitch every game like I'm Mussina or Greg Maddux out there and it's starting to wear on me. Any tips on what I might be doing wrong? I know a lot of people prefer to play on Pro, perhaps I need to go back to that level. Also, what are your tips for getting more K's? I do the full-power pitch like mentioned above but the CPU still seems to lay off it way too much.
kgbaseball
Datafile and sliders play the biggest impact on how often you strike out batters. I remember when I was using MD's that I did not get many strikeouts, but I found that datafile to have the best CPU batting skill. You literally just have to play with every datafile and find out what works. I think I'm using one of Trues' latest datafiles, and I get a lot of Ks, but the CPU offense isn't as strong as I would like it.
ehhh
I think I'm using one of Trues' latest datafiles, and I get a lot of Ks, but the CPU offense isn't as strong as I would like it. That seems to be the ultimate sacrifice, it doesn't appear that we can get both in the same datafile. It seems like every time I get a normal amount of K's the CPU offense as a whole is terrible. Every pitcher on my staff will have a sub 4.00 ERA. Are you playing on Pro or All-Star using True's datafile?
kgbaseball
MVP. I sim a fair amount of games, and through 80+ games, my starters' ERA's are anywhere from 3.5-
gowingsgo8803
I agree with KG. Change the sliders to your liking, or find a slider download that's suitable. I feel your pain though. Many times, I get plastered by pitchers when I'm throwing full speed, even when the cursor lands on perfect, they end up smacking it into the gap and end up trailing by 4-7 after an inning and a third. Remember to mix up your pitches to keep the batters of pace, and obviously, landing the cursor in the green helps :p
Gordo
I don't know if this helps at all, but it may be somewhat in keeping with what you guys are talking about. I've always used MD's datafile (with the foul-ball PIP removed). Here's the slider set I've recently settled on. The results are from gm 5 of my NLCS. Check the pitch counts for both teams..... seemingly pretty sim.
jp_hidalgo
MVP has one big problem with pitching... NO SIMULATION. We only can edit pitches and how they will move, how fast and under what amount of control.... but those stats will never reflect BB ratio, K ratio, OAVG or HR allowed... I always had the same problem with "All Timers", it's impossible to create a pitcher like Maddux in 1994 or Clemens, Koufax or Randy Johnson... You cannot create the real difference between these guys. If you give them control, you will finish having pinpoint accuracy wich will give you more strikeouts (in all datafiles it works in the same way) but there's nothing to do about how hard our pitches are going to be hitted. I already have my own datafile and sliders, but I don't give more than 2 walks per game and I've almost never struck out more than 10.
superciuc
I actually struck out sometimes more then 10, and i give a couple of walks per game. I actually struck out 12 yesterday with Lilly.
Gordo
Well, it may end up being like a lot of sports games. You'll either have great in-game stats, generally, but not simmed stats or vice versa. You'll have to pick your preference. Personally, I like the ingame being more realistic typically. I don't remember the in season or end of the season stats.....they're just not as important. I bought the game for it to play well.
