So i just bought a PS3 and the show

So this weekend I checked my credit score after a recent payoff to Samash Music. Im a bass man and finally this bass I have is payed off =P. I had previously had a credit line with them and my score is a nice 687, which I think is really good for a 21 yr old. So I was thinking I needed a new line to raise my score to my goal of 720 eventually. But what did I want.

So i ventured to newegg.com and was thinking a new pc, a tv, or a gaming system. I opted against a tv because I do not watch much television. And i opted against a new pc because I'm not the biggest pc gamer and most of the games I play run fine on my system even though its 4 years old. Mostly sports games and emulators witha few older action games sprinkled in.

Now came the the system decision. If I was simply going to choose based on overall games and online gaming features I would of gone with the xbox 360. However, I needed a new baseball experience, and I knew 2k8 would not cut it. The hitting was still very unrealistic with the ease of the HR ball, and fielding still felt very very weird.

So my choice was the PS3. I watched gamespots in depth baseball review that they do every year. This years game showdown review was about 17 minutes long, and furthur pushed the show as the more realistic bug free game. However I did see and read two things I disliked. Number one is the fielding throws. Yes they are very smooth and stuff, but is there a power meter that dictates how hard you throw? I always hated baseball games that you tap the button and then errors are random. Id like to know if I had a meter like MVP so if I throw to hard I can overthrow or whatever else.

Although minor to some, the second thing I disliked was that the game seems to have a contact and power button. I ALWAYS hated this in games as I felt that the MVP way of swinging up was better, or getting great contact sometimes meant HR. Two different swing buttons never felt right to me. If anything the swing stick is the only thing I like in 2k8 but then again the results of the hitting are unrealistic and easy. But a good feature.

I bought my system with also EA Skate which I loved in demos compared to any Tony Hawk game. Hawk was always easy and unrealistic, and as a former skater I loved the realism and actual challenge of pulling of big moves in Skate. Hey look EA got something right.

I also got GTA 4=D. Anyways guys, anyone with a first hand experience to the Show. Give me your insight into the game and what not. I figure if I do not enjoy it Ill just sell it to EB Games and get MVP 08 when it comes out.

Also what is the batting like in the Show. Is it like MVP where you swing thru the 9 zones of the strike zone, and if you swing away on something in they react weirdly? Or if you swing up on something low out of the zone you get a dribbling grounder? I always thought MVP had realistic batting and would love the SHow to be this way. I def do not want 2k8's hitting results. HR's off the thin part of the bat up and in to hitters =/

The Show is very frustrating, but I still play it all the time. I'm simply a wretched hitter (i've played MVP for 3 years now and only recently became happy with my hitting), but I'm a tremendous pitcher. I play RTTS with a pitcher, and it has several annoying quirks. One, there are 10-12 pitch at bats way way way too frequently compared to real life. Also, some of the fielding controls fail for no good reason.

The other day I had a 17 pitch at bat, and the batter finally put it in play with a little dribbler to first. I ran over to cover, and should've had him by 5', but the first baseman threw the ball straight up in the air, while the controls froze on me. Very annoying.

Also, it awards progression points on really stupid situations. When you get what should be an inning-ending double play but the fielder completely botches it for an error, losing 30 points because of a blown save is infuriating.

Good luck.

Are these overall game issues or just RTTS issues. From the gamespot review I watched it seemd to be limited to the RTTS according to them.

And can any game get foul balls just right? MVP has very little foul ball, many pitch at bats, but the Show seems to have to many lol.

Could you tell me more about the batting and fielding things I addressed in my first post. Fielding meters, realistic hitting, results of swinging away on inside stuff. If its like MVP in any aspect of the game.

Honestly, I have played maybe 5 games outside of RTTS pitching, which I know is pathetic. The hitting is pretty realistic, though as a pitcher I tend to get annoyed when a player can pull a 94 mph fastball on the outside corner for a double.

The foul balls are a major issue any way you slice it. I like the fielding controls in terms of the throw meter (concentric circles around your player's feet), and everything else feels solid. If you try to slap a pitch opposite field that's inside, you will either have terrible contact or look like an idiot, so that's realistic. And, fortunately (unfortunately for me), batters can make greater contact outside of the strike zone.

Smart decision going with the PS3. I bought a 360 a few years ago and recently sold it on eBay and bought a Wii which I'm having a blast with (Mario Kart and Smash Bros are worth the purchase alone - two of the most addicting and fun videogames I've played since I was a teenager) and I still have MVP05 on the PC of course.

As for The Show, personally I feel the game has a ways to go yet before it warrants me purchasing a PS3. Hopefully it happens in '09 but I'm still hesitant. It's all about the controls for me - I hate the hitting and I hate the fielding.

Good luck with the PS3 though, are you big into Blu-Ray?

Lol you mean like Vlad Guerrero. His long arms reach anything and he swings at anything close. He has to have the most bad ball Hr's ive ever seen.

I just rewatched some you tube vids with the fielding circles. Hopefully they work as well as the mvp meters. I like that they are in the feet, less clutter around players.

About the hitting, well if they are early on the outside pitch of course it will pull =D. Hopefully timing is a big factor in this game. Timing seemed to not matter in 2k8. I could just decide which direction i wanted to swing and the ball would go there even if I purposely swung early or late. I hope this game has the lil frame by frame by replay =).

Anyways thanx for the help.

I hear you bro. I def wanna play the new Mario Kart, and Brawl is amazing. We played that so much during the end of the semester when it came out this spring. I feel this game has the greatest balance of the 3 in the series and i have not found any cheap exploits as of yet, like the wave dash in Melee. However I must say that MetaKnight is way cheap and overly strong in the game. Id say he has to be top tier above any other character int he game. Especially when playing pro users online.

I figured the PS3 was worth it for the BluRay player as well. Seeing as most movies come out on bluray more than HD Dvd. I work at hollywood video and sears electronics not too long ago and most major films come out on bluray. Not to mention I think the picture is much more crisp for blu ray on the lcd tv's I was selling compared to the Hd dvd.

However, your remark about the Show makes me weary about liking it. You can see from my comments that the hitting and fielding is what im most worried about. I must say I loved my 360 when I had it. I had perfect dark with it a couple months after launch and would play online for hours of fun. Xbox live was so much improved from the last gen. But I sold it after a few months and got into doing other things as I had no time for gaming.

I just hope the PS3 has some games worth getting besides a few sports games.

Oh, the irony. Forever, baseball gamers have complained about inaccurately low foul ball numbers, even going back to the High Heat series. Now, we have a game that seems to be very good in most other aspects, apart from gamers now seeing too many foul balls.

I am 38-36 with the Cubs in my season with The Show. I've said this before, but after playing through the High Heat and MVP Series, I swore I'd never own another console baseball again.

Never say never.

I've tweaked and tuned this game to my liking, and IMO, it is simply the best baseball game ever made. The foul balls do get a little annoying, but it balances out when you look at pitch count. Extremley realistic.

Through 74 games (along with the real schedule) my Cubbies (as a team) are batting .273 and have a team ERA of 3.49. Soriano leads the team with 16 homeruns, and 18 stolen bases.

I play on the Hall of Fame level and the hitting is extremely difficult. A 95 MPH Fastball looks just like it sounds. If you're looking fastball, and you get caught with a good curveball on one of the corners, you might as well just put down the controller.

MVP was a great game, and this community made it even better, but I would have a hard time going back after playing The Show.

but Sean O is right. I got the Show last week and im lovin it but you will have a 9 pitch battle at least once every inning. it is rare to have the Cpu swing at the first pitch. It doesnt bother me much though cuz sometimes i get into 10 pitch battles myself and tire out the pitcher. One thing that bothers me a lot though is if it's two out man on first and the batter hits it to the 3B or 2B or SS and you try to get the force out at 2nd the fielder takes forever to throw the ball to 2nd and sometimes he would be safe cuz the fielder takes that damn long.

Can you use sliders to turn down foul balls? And does this game have the frame by frame pitch review that MVP had that shows the trail of the ball.

Btw from the gamespot editor review, ign review, and a couple user reviews on other sites, it seems that The Show has the pitch speed down pack as you have said. I know for me that 2k8 seemed wacky and fast and you had no time to judge the speed of the ball and the location accurately. But in MVP for me, it seemed too slow, and not like real life pitch speed unless i bumped the slider to 50.

Its great that this game seems to have it right and I cant wait.

Well hey this is better than in MVP where the batters NEVER lay off anything and swing away alot. I swear I usually have to throw lots of junk to ever make it to even a 6 or 7 pitch at bat.

The "Hit Quality" slider adjusts the sweet spot of the bat, lowering it decreases it which would obviously cause more foul balls. There is no "foul ball" slider.

As far as the pitch review, I never used it in MVP and I haven't seen it in The Show, although it may exist.

That is def the best part about The Show, IMO. The pitch speed & movement is amazingly realistic.

I've gotten crossed up looking offspeed, but getting an 'eye high' fastball at 97 MPH. The sound of the ball hitting the catcher's glove will make you flinch.

Speaking of diversity, not only does this game feel like real baseball, the options within it are amazing. The Face Editor essentially let's you create any face you want. There are about 1,000 options to choose from. If you're talented, you can basically "draw" anyone you want.

It's amazing.

Not to mention the stock players. Here's Scott Rolen.

This is *infuriating.* I once had the batter (someone pretty slow, not ichiro or Crawford) hit a little one-hop nubber to my pitcher. I immediately tried to gun the ball to first (full throw speed), and the animation had the pitcher: slowly take the ball out of the glove, tap the ball to the glove twice, then throw the ball to first. He was safe by 3 steps.

Absolutely no excuse for the animation being lackadaisical when I'm trying to get outs. And when a closer in RTTS has far too few points to use for advancement to begin with, having a 1 WHIP instead of a 0 gets frustrating.

I hope this is fixed. I def cannot deal with weird throws like that =P

But then again, MVP has given me high expectations, but ill be as accepting as i can.

I went into best buy 2 weeks ago to help my mom get an ipod video. So why I was going through best buy, I passed by a ps3 and only to find out that the show was being played on the demo. So I played the demo, and I loved it. It convinced me never to play 2k8 again, seeing how realistic it was compared to arcade 2k8. I was actually searching online, and came across one of those "FREE PS3!!" things, and wondered if it really worked. Appearenty they do, I went on youtube and some guy taped himself getting the packages and showing off the receipt with the website on it.

Yeah I had a friend who got an Xbox 360 doing those things. But its alot of work. He had to refer so many people to the one site. Mostly people he knew, and its hard because they have to sign up with their credit cards as he did, and then and try and gather others. Its possible to be done, just hard convincing numerous friends. Some are scams and never send the system though, just have to find the right one.

And I hope 2k9 is less arcade-ish next year. 2k baseball was amazing on the dreamcast and was good the first year on the xbox, but what happened to the game. Didnt Visual Concepts leave and then it went down hill?

Have you got it hooked up to High Def? If not, you haven't seen anything yet.
