TrumpeteerNYR
Do we have any big hockey fans here? Even better, do we have any New York Rangers fans here? I've been bleeding Rangers blue for a while now, and I'm just looking for some other people who like NHL/Rangers (especially if you like to have intelligent conversations about it...not like "OMFG RANGERS SUUUUUUUUUCK!!!!!!1!!!!!! AVERY'S SUCH A WIMP!!!!!!!!) Yeah. haha... Check out my blog at nyrinva.blogspot.com Lemme know what you think!

andytheavs
Hey, I've been an Avalanche fan for 12 years and a Sharks fan for almost as long. As for the Avery's a wimp...he's not, but Sean Avery is a complete embarrassment to the NHL. His on-ice conduct is a distraction and detraction from the game. Anyway, that's about it! stanleyc
Rangers all the way. Tuesday night during the Pearl Jam concert at Madison Square Garden, Eddie Vedder started a "Lets go Rangers" chant. It was awesome.

TrumpeteerNYR
haha yes, Avery will be testing the free agency market...read the blog, one of the more recent posts details my opinion on the matter. Also, if Sean Avery is an embarrassment to the NHL, then Chris Simon and Todd Bertuzzi must be downright cancers. No one talked about his 'antics' before the Brodeur incident. Yes, it was bad. But I think Bertuzzi smashing Moore's face into the ice and Chris Simon doing everything is much worse. Anyway, I digress...glad to see that there are hockey fans here - I don't know many, so it's nice to have some around haha.
andytheavs
Trumpeteer you are 100% right. Guys like Bertuzzi and Simon should have been banned from the NHL long ago. While Avery hasn't done anything on that scale of physical violence, someone needs to teach him common sense. I am sad to say Chris Simon was a member of the 1996 cup winning Avalanche. I would very much like to know what everyone else thinks of the 'state of the NHL'. For instance, do you think there is enough scoring? Do you think fighting still holds a meaningful place in the new NHL? Why haven't referees been consistent in calling interference, hooking, and holding penalties in the last 2 years (they claimed penalties would be strictly enforced after the lockout)? Has the status of Restricted Free Agent been destroyed since the use of the Offer Sheet by Oilers GM Kevin Lowe? Is it wise to sign franchise players to such large, long contracts (Ovechkin for 13 years $124M)? Have fun!

Please, we know we are a-holes, but red sox fans are worse.

Is it wise to sign franchise players to such large, long contracts (Ovechkin for 13 years $124M)? Have fun! The "State of the NHL"...good question. Honestly, it's on the rise. People are getting back into it. Guys like Ovechkin and Crosby have brought in a whole new fan base (especially Ovechkin in D.C...that's a hockey city now). The scoring could be better - which is whey they're making goalie equipment adjustments. Those rules will be in place within the next season or two. But with all the talent at forward and defense, goalies are having a hard time keeping up. Games are much higher scoring now. I think fighting still does hold a meaningful role in the NHL. It's more of a team concept though, if you get what I mean. There are still enforcers who go out to defend the star players - but those guys are becoming more skilled themselves. I think fighting will always be important - it's a way to motivate the team, as well as the fans - and it keeps guys honest about targeting the big guns on your team. The penalties were very strictly enforced right after the lockout - but to a point of sacrificing the flow of the game. They've cut down on calls, no doubt. They miss a lot - but I think it's a good thing, for the most part. It allows the guys to just play. Sometimes they blow obvious calls, but I think they're letting smaller things go. Unfortunately though, they turn their heads when Crosby and Ovechkin get the puck - I'm not saying this as a Rangers fan, but as someone who loves analyzing the game. They're trying to protect the guys who will bring the NHL back to relevance. As much as I hate it, it's working. I digress - essentially what I'm saying is that they need to enforce the rules, and when it's obvious, it must be called. But if it's a little thing or something that doesn't disrupt game play, they shouldn't be calling it. I do think the concept of the RFA has been destroyed, but I don't know much about the financial aspects of the game - so I'll leave that alone. And do I think it's wise to lock up guys like that? Yes and no. When you're dealing with a player who the fans love and who has pure talent, then I don't think it's a bad idea. It gives the guy peace of mind, and it let's him worry about the on-ice stuff - which is most important. It's becoming rarer with each year for guys to spend an entire career with one team (i.e. Mike Richter, so far Brodeur...). It's important to give the fans someone who they can grasp onto and identify with - so from a marketing perspective, it's a great idea. But from a hockey perspective, you never know what could happen. Ovechkin could suffer an injury that leaves him a shell of his former self. It's a game, and the future is never in stone. It's really a high risk/high reward situation. If the guy stays healthy and performs, it's great - you save yourself some money in the long run, and the guy stays with you. But if he gets injured or loses his skill, then you're stuck with a has-been for more than he deserves. A sticky situation no doubt.

It hasn't been made *official* yet lol...the Agent is denying it, but I'm sure he'll be back in Czech. I didn't foresee him re-signing with the Rangers - I figured he'd return to either Pittsburgh or Czech Republic. I'm sure he'll make the announcement once the FA period begins.
