7up3345
I have 2g of ram. My computer has 4 slots. 2 are used by 512mb, and 1 is used by a 1g. I want to buy two more gigs, but i dont have enough slots. I wanted to know if it was possible to take out one of the 512mb and put in a 1 gig. Would that screw up my computer? or is it possible? wrigleyville33
No you can substitute a gb for a 512.
MarkB
If you can find a 2GB DIMM, which shouldn't be too difficult, you shouldn't run into any problems. 1 x 1GB DIMM, 1 x 2GB DIMM and 2 x 512MB. Bear in mind a few things though. Most motherboard manufacturers support various different speeds of RAM, but if you don't match the speeds, the motherboard either will refuse to complete POST, or will run all the memory at the speed of the slowest DIMM, so check out the speeds you have already and try to match any additional RAM with the ones you have just now. Also, if you're using a 32-bit OS, Windows won't detect all 4GB of RAM. It will use somewhere between 3GB and 3.5GB, depending on your system configuration. Moving to Tech Talk forum. 7up3345
Ok i have windows xp 32bit. So if I take out one of my 512 mb stick of ram, and put in a 1g stick of ram it will work. Thanks for your help.
MarkB
Indeed - but then you'll only have 2.5GB.
Kayxero
If I may add upon what mark said. IMO you should get three gigs of ram and have a gig in each slot for a max of 4g. Its better if you can dual run all ram at the same speed. Instead of dualing two 1 gigs sticks, and then having a 1 gig and a 512 in the next series. Follow? But then again this is advice in case you have the extra lil bit of cash for the 3rd gig. And 4 gigs of ram kicks *** for whatever game you decide to play. Crysis anyone? =)

I will get another 1 gig stick, just got to make some more money first haha
Kayxero
newegg.com is your friend. Best place for pc supplies.
MarkB
Considering they don't ship outside the U.S. or Puerto Rico, I'd disagree vehemently.
Kayxero
Ebay is your friend? How about tiger direct or computer gate? Mark, Do you and other Euro dudes have an equivalent alternative to NewEgg in terms of price and shipping costs?
MarkB
Everyone has their own preference, but I prefer to shop locally, if possible. If not, I'll compare prices from various sites such as ebuyer, Maplin, PC World and Overclockers UK. One site I would avoid with a passion now is MicroDirect. Shopped with them a few times, and every time was a total mess. Their online store is decent and had some good prices, but the after-purchase support and their customer service is shockingly bad. I don't like the idea of a one-stop-shop for everything.
Kayxero
I like the idea of it. It makes things easier and simple. I never shop locally, as most places overprice products compared to online retailers. And overclockers has a great forum. I used to search and dig around there back when I started system building and getting into o/c. I dont really find the need to o/c anymore, as the dual cores seem very speedy =).
