KidCavalier23
Hey guys, approximately a year ago (I can't remember the exact date,) I bought a brand new Vista Acer laptop. During the first couple weeks I had the computer, I was very impressed with the way it worked. Well, it's the complete opposite today. The only way I can watch a video now is through my iPod Touch, that's how bad videos lag on my laptop. It's awful. I scan it once a week, no problems. The processes always run at 100%. Very rarely is it not running at 100% and if it isn't it's usually in the mid to low 90's. How can I fix this? This is the information on my "great" laptop. Thanks for any feedback you guys can support! :)
MarkB
The 100% CPU usage is what's causing the lag. You mentioned that the process always run at 100% - which processes? If you want to stop the lag temporarily, just click on the process in Task Manager, then click on End Process. That should return the system to normal CPU usage. Let me know which processes are using his amounts of CPU time.
Homer
yeah, holy crap man. 100% should be the problem. what anti-virus are you using?
KidCavalier23
AOL is the main thing. Explorer can be a pain in the @$$ as well. There are others, but those are the main two. I use McAfree Homer (I believe that's the anit-virus software, it does my scans).
MarkB
The first thing you typed in that post is your problem. No further technical support required.
KidCavalier23
I know thats the problem. The problem is, when I begin using Firefox, the same exact thing happens. No matter what browser I use, the internet works extremely slow. It's pretty frustrating, but thanks for all the input so far! :)
Spivey
AOL is the main thing. You can try using Online website. I use http://www.meebo.com . You type in your AIM and password and i signs you in like it would with AIM. But on the Internet
MarkB
Well, if the AOL processes are still running, even if they're not shown on the taskbar, they can still be using gigantic amounts of CPU time on the various crap that it does, so even using Firefox with the AOL junk open in the background is causing your system to run slowly. Here's a test. When you first start your PC, before AOL even loads, is the system slow at that point? If it is, check Task Manager, and look for any AOL related processes. If not, then it's just AOL being **** that's causing your PC to run slowly. If you're up for it and this is your PC, there are guides available on how to connect to AOL's internet service without using their software. Just do a Google search for "Using AOL internet connection without software" and you'll get some decent results. (Why would anyone with a functioning brain stem and even an ounce of technical ability even consider using AOL as their internet provider?) You gotta ask my dad that one, if it were up to me, I would have started off originally with just Firefox and AIM instead of this crappy browser... It also disconnects you if you open a new page.
MarkB
Tell him that continued usage of AOL may stunt your mental growth and turn you into a retard and strongly recommend that if he wants to raise a fully-functional member of society and a child he can be proud of, he should use another ISP. Failing that, a good kicking should convince him.

KidCavalier23
Yeah, its definetly AOL. Just going on this website bumps the memory usage up to 150,000 k. This any myspace together, forget it, my computer would probably blow up. Thanks for the help so far guys!

RdSoxFan618
You gotta ask my dad that one, if it were up to me, I would have started off originally with just Firefox and AIM instead of this crappy browser... Here's what I would recommend. Get rid of AOL (or do a total system reformat if you want it running brand new ) Get Firefox. Here's what's cool: You can now use Meebo. Firefox is amazing because you can have tabs to keep your web browsing to one window. Browsing Tabs have to have been the greatest invention ever. AIM isn't a huge resource hog, so it's OK to download, just don't get any of those crappy plugins they try and install (EG: AOL Toolbar). And voila, you should be back and fast again.
