plunger021
Dear Mr. McCourt, Keeping Manny Ramirez should be your real number one goal this off season, I know you are going to offer him a deal that you think he will turn down (2 yr/ 60 million) and once he does tell all of your loyal fans that you tried your best to resign him. Keeping Manny should be above getting C.C. (I hear every baseball "expert" say that's where they should spend their money instead) for a number of reasons. 1. Paying Manny what he wants is like making an investment on your future. The young guys like Ethier, Martin, Loney, and Kemp are all better players with him in the lineup. He gives them more confidence and more importantly, they see better pitches with him in the lineup. 2. He's already payed for himself next season. By having him for free last season you have already made more money in merchandise, tickets, parking, concessions, and not to mention, the Dodgers had more nationally broadcasted games after getting him. He makes you and your team more interesting to watch to the casual fan. 3. Kevin Brown ,Derrin Dreifort, and more recently Jason Schmidt. After them a lot of money how many wins did they provide? I know you didn't own the team then, but learn from other people's mistakes. Mulder, Hampton, and Zito are a few more that haven't panned out. You have young pitching that give you some W's next year. Kershaw looked great and so did McDonald. McDonald reminds me of another young pitcher you traded away Edwin Jackson and you see what he did this year. You still have Kuroda and staff ace Billingsley. A solid rotation and bullpen you have, w/o Manny the Dodgers' offense was anemic scoring just over 3 runs a game. Even with a team ERA under 4, you can't win like that. Keep Manny and the West is your again. Yours Truly, Plunger
rolie
I don't think it will happen. Ramirez wants at least a four year deal and will definitely get that with his superman second half performance. The outfield is already overcrowded. There are more glaring holes at 3B, SS, 2B and 2 frontline starters from the rotation, forgot about bills. I'd rather rebuild. Just get the draft picks instead of resigning. I don't like the notion of trying to rebuild and win at the same time. This deal would have made sense 2-3 years ago. I really don't care about division titles. They don't hang those banners at Dodger Stadium.
plunger021
They do need to resign Furcal, he's a great spark in the lineup. I heard they were in some talks with Casey Blake, but that obviously isn't the future there. They have been rebuilding, Either, Kemp, Loney and Martin are just getting better. People said it made sense to sign Greg Maddux not only to pitch, but to teach some of the young guys. Listening to interviews from Bowa and others around the team, Manny has been a great influence on the young hitters, not only from watching, but he teaches them how to approach the game. I also heard Boras is wanting a 6 year deal calling Manny "Iconic." 6 years/ 150 or 160 mill might be a little too much though, I understand that, but what I say sign him over C.C. if your going to spend that kind of cash. I don't like tying up that kind of money on a pitcher. Sabathia hasn't pitched great in the post season, at least you know Manny will bring it in October. rolie
The young guys are getting better. We need to lock some of them up. What Manny did was ridiculous. A lot of people in LA want him back but the fact is we still got routed by the phils. The reason CC didn't do good in the playoffs is because he wasn't rested. Don't get me wrong I don't think signing CC is a ideal. I'd rather keep the draft picks. I think it was Ron Cey that said it takes a ballplayer about 5 years to really get acclimated to the majors. I believe we are a few years away from that. I'd rather stockpile now and be good for a decade rather than a couple years.
SwinginSoriano
30 million a year for Manny? I'd rather buy the Devil Rays.
Dodgerone
Manny is going for a multi- year contract. He's, what, about 37 now, with bad wheels? He might be looking for, let's say, 3 or 4 years at $100 mil or more? Believe me, I'm a Dodger fan from wayyyyy back and would love to see Manny batting 3rd again but, I just don't think the economics will be right. Your right about Brown, Dreifort and Schmidt, they are still trying to get something from Schmidt. The only other solution for the Dodgers would be to move the fences in another 10 feet ( remember when center field at Chavez Ravine was 410 ft?)That would make Dodger stadium a hitters sandbox, and you wouldn't need a Manny. (actually, I would raise the wall in lf & rf to 8 ft and bring bring them in 10 ft making them 320 ft instead of 330 ft., round the ally walls and make cf 410 ft, allowing for more homers to right and left and adding more triples in the gaps and dead center to utilize the team's speedsters.
