As xiberger said, download the file you want, open it up, install it according to the instructions and enjoy. That's the simple explanation.

There are a few things to be aware of, however. First of all, most downloaded files are compressed Zip or RAR files. To open these files, you need a tool like WinZip or WinRar, which are available for download on the Internet (just google for them).

Once you open the file with these tools, you'll then need to extract the contents of the files someplace before installing. Now, before you install anything, make sure that you BACK UP the existing version of whatever you are installing. If you run into problems with your new file, you will have a way to revert to the previous, working version.

Trust me when I say that many of us here have learned the hard way what happens if you don't back up your files. You end up spending extra time trying to solve the problem, and at worst, you have to completely uninstall and reinstall the game (and then reinstall all of the mods you had already installed).

After backing up your files, install the update as indicated in the instructions included with the mod.

Some updates require Kraw's Total Installer Thingy (TIT). There are plenty of posts about this tool.
