seanzarelli
Okay so my stepdad reformated his desktop with Windows XP SP3 and the download speed was cut drastically. Before the reformat, he was achieving speeds of about 300kbps and now after the reformat, he can only top out at about 100kbps. We reinstalled all of the original drivers, and even tried resetting the router to no avail. So if someone could please help me out with a solution I'd greatly appreciate it as I am leaving town in the morning for a week. EDIT: Also, mine nor my brother's speed has been compromised as we are still able to achieve about 300kbps
MarkB
XP SP2, I believe, came with a change that limited the amount of maximum simultaneous TCP connections to a server. Download this file, run it, and inrease the amount of connections to 50. That should be plenty.
seanzarelli
thanks for the reply mark. after making the post last night we ran some download tests and we were up around the 300kbps but if we tried downloading from rapidshare it cut back down to 100. I am thinking that there must be a port that is limiting the traffic dealing with rapidshare because I tried downloading the same file and I was able to get the 300 level on rapidshare. MarkB
It could just be bad luck - Rapidshare limits bandwidth depending on how many connections it has at one time, so if you're downloading at a busy time, it'll trottle the bandwidth available. However, make a connection to the same file half a second later and it may have a better speed -it just depends on how many connections there are at that time. If you're getting your normal speed consistently from the same speed check site, I'd say your PC's settings and configuration is most likely to be fine. All HTTP traffic normally goes through port 80, so unless there's some sort of weird firewall rule set up, I'd hope it's not a port mapping problem. How does the system connect to the internet? NIC, wireless or USB? Maybe try another PC on the same port/connection that your Dad's PC is using to ensure it's not a problem with whatever it is he's using. I've seen problems with NIC wall sockets cause weird issues in the past.
