hollywood57
Hey guys, I don't know all the rules of baseball...Why on some fly balls, when a player catch it, he must throw the ball to the 1B to retire the batter? Is it because the catch is in the infield? Thx
spicybanana
A "fly ball" is a ball hit in the air that hasn't touched the ground yet. Thus, when a fielder catches a "fly ball", it is ruled an out. If a fielder catches the ball out of the air after it has hit the ground (a "ground ball"), he must "force" the runner out at first base.
Hollywood70
Or, if there was already a runner on first who strayed too far from the bag while the ball was in the air, whoever catches the ball would throw to first to try to double the runner up (meaning if the ball gets to first before the runner gets back to the bag, he's out as well as the batter). hollywood57
in fact, I didn't see that the ball touched the ground before going up, until I see that on replays !... Sometimes it goes too fast, I think the ball goes in the air whereas it touched the ground before... sorry ! :)
