Wanna Have A Laugh? Check My Box Score.

Hi... I'm European, and as you probably know we have absolutely no clue about baseball here. It has virtually ZERO following. I've never seen a baseball game in my life.

I grew up with hockey and soccer, which are the biggest sports in my country... but I've always been a sports fan... and especially sports gaming fan. There's a similar hardcore hockey gaming community, which is revolving around a vintage EA title, the all time best hockey game for PC, NHL 2004... the game has been graphically completely rebuilt by the members, and it's ridiculously better looking and plays million times better than EA's new products.

Well... the amazing box score extractor (that I found through Google search) raised my interest. I dream that one day we can have similar program and can share our scores and stats... that's actually why I originally wandered here. I bought MVP Baseball from Amazon... just out of curiosity. I was impressed of the member-based addons, which is the biggest reason I'm a die-hard PC gamer. Consoles can't really compete in that sense.

I started the game, I had absolutely no clue what I was supposed to do (as I don't know the sport). I only knew the very basics. I chose the easiest difficulty and the AI was kicking my *** since the beginning.

Well I tested the extractor and it really works like a charm. Hugely impressive program. See my 1st baseball game box score here. (Choose "open" with your Web browser) I was playing Boston, and I must be the worst player in this forums' history.

Well... I think I love this game (and sport). It looks like an amazing sports game, which I definitely want to learn. At the end I even scored a few home runs, when I started to figure out the basics.

I have a few very basic questions about the game.

1. Is there a way to see what keys are used in the game? For some weird reason I can't seem to find the "Configure Controller" option from the menus.

2. When you're pitching, should you always try to get the meter stop on the green (perfect) line?

3. How often it's beneficial to change the pitcher during the game, and what skill attribute is important for a good pitcher?

4. Can you recommend me a good video that I can watch... how the game should actually be played?

5. What is the recommended roster set + facepack combo for this game, to get the current league players?

Thanks guys... good to be here. It's places like this that make PC gaming so amazing.

This is fantastic. I couldn't imagine baseball being foreign to me. I grew up with it. My grandfather palyed minor league ball, my dad's career was ruined by Vietnam and then I came along and was scared of anything on the indside half of the plate. But I still love the game.

If you need any tutoring, I think we would all be happy to assist.

I noticed that there's a sticky thread "MVP Baseball for Dummies". I guess there should be another one for me... "MVP Baseball for Super Dummies". :D

Well... I'll play another game as soon as I can. I hope the box score looks better next time. Thanks for the welcome guys.

PS: These abbreviations in the box score... where can I find the explanations for them?

Hitters AB R H RBI BB SO AVG

Fielders TC PO A E F%

Pitchers IP H R ER BB SO PC ERA

To answer some of your questions...

1. Yep. From the main menu go to "My MVP", then "My MVP Options", then "Controller Config."

2. Exactly.

3. It depends on how much stamina the pitcher has and how you are able to pitch with a pitcher with a low stamina. When his stamina starts going down, it gets harder and harder to get it in the green part of the meter. Usually I keep a starting pitcher in for about 5, 6, 7 innings or so, unless he's really sucking and giving up like 5 runs per inning. Relief pitchers usually have less stamina so they only pitch about 1 or 2 innings.

4. Sorry, I don't know of one off the top of my head.

5. You should get MVP 08! You can get it here (I think), or at eamods.com.

Hey man, I think we all got creamed our first game in MVP. Glad to see you here, and if you have any questions, just ask.

What would you like to know about baseball?

Hey... played another game and did much better. Loving this game... great atmosphere!

However... how can I increase the power for my batting? Is it all about timing? CPU seems to hit direct home runs from my pitching all the time, but I haven't hit even one direct HR yet.

PS: Thanks all for your cool replies. :)

Thanks man... will try that one now. It seems to me that I'm doing quite well as long as my pitcher has good stamina left. How often do you guys change the pitcher during the game?

Also... even when I'm pitching rather well, timing wise (stopping on the green field) the CPU gets heck of a many direct home runs from those... even in the easiest difficulty. Any tips there... or could that be an indicator of the pitcher's low stamina (i.e weak throws)?

This seems to be a very good sports game... right up there among the best... with modded NHL 2004 and Pro Evolution Soccer 5.
