Template Help

i've been trying for a couple of days to create a good template for helmets, very little luck. all i need a very basic template with the normal holes and such, but also a placement layer for throwback ones, like the o's of the late 70's or braves of the early 80's where there white front area. i need to be able have it so i can change each areas colors without disturbing the details of the helmet in 256x128 psd form.

if any can help out with that, i'd appreciate it, or can at least get me started with it some how, as this the one few templates i cant get made to any real good point.
