Pick-offs.... Possible?

Ok.. I've been playing MVP 2005 ever since it came out (for boths consoles and PC). I've never once been able to pick-off the computer..... EVER!

Is it just absolutely impossible to pick them off?

Not a big deal... just always wondered and figured this would be a great place to ask.

ROFL @ Y4L. Just had to use a Boston player getting caught sleeping. :D

All the time my friend, all the time.

Oh...and to Dalebopp: Practice your pickoffs when you have a runner on first just to get used to doing it. I always throw over and I've become pretty good at getting more than my share of runners. This also works not just in the 08 mod but any mod that is out there.

Check out a screen capture of one of my pickoffs. Here I get Jacoby Ellsbury. He was too busy laughing at the Rangers because he got a hit and wasn't paying attention.

why dose your runner have no batting helment on

Any tips?

I honestly feel like I'm a really solid MVP player... but this is just something I have kind of written off as not happening. I use it primarily as a way to work the batters back closer to the bag.

Does it calulate the timing in between pitches. Meaning... should I alter my timing before I pitch, just like in real life. I wasn't sure if this algorithm was incorporated in the game, but doubt it. Perhaps there's something else I'm missing? I mean... if they're leading off as far as possible, what more can I do than the quicker throw and full power?

Again... this is a very small element of the game so I'm not too worried about it, but if there's something I may be missing, let me know.

Thanks,

-Scott

I thought I just gave you a tip on this. Practice at this. That way you get your timing down. Simple as that.

I have the same problem, what timing is there I just have the pitcher throw as hard as possible to first with the idea that the harder I throw the quicker the ball will get there, is there more to the timing then that, such as when in a count you throw, how many times you throw or how soon after you get the ball you throw over there.

thanks, tyger

Tyger,

I think we just got scolded and told to "practice".

I thought I was doing that for the last 5 years... maybe another 5 is what it takes :)

.. I'm in the same boat you are

its not that its just that theres no real "trick" to it

its not as much skill as it is to luck

Roy's right in a way. Picking off runners does involve luck. It's not like you are going to throw over there once and that takes care of that. It takes practice. The way that I got pretty good at this was by playing practice games where I would intentionally walk the first batter every inning, therefore setting up a steal situation. That would give me nine opportunities to try to pick them off. That's how I got accustomed to doing this.

The pitcher should also have a halfway decent pickoff move. Some pitchers have better pickoff ratings than others, so that also plays a part in it. As others have said, it's also a matter of timing and having the runner have a pretty good lead off the base.

Yep...it's pure luck. Played that game for 5 years and probably lucked out 3 times in those 5 years....lol.

I average one pickoff every three games I play. That's because what I told that guy in this thread I actually do. I practice at it. One time I was in a tournament on this website and I picked off a lot of guys online because of this.

I think my problem is I don't know what to practice. Is it better to throw before the throw meter goes all the way down. Is it better to wait a few seconds after you are able to pitch to throw the pick off move. In otherwords what exactly makes a good pickoff move. Telling us to practice (or me at least I don't want to speak for dalebopp) doesn't help much if we don't know what to practice. I could practice throwing a knuckleball all I want but until I know the exact technique required I will never be able to throw one.

Get a guy on base. Watch him take his lead and see how far he goes. And then I throw over and I do it again and again.

so.. did you do anything different? I've been trying to "practice" with different techniques, like trying to press both buttons at the same time, the throw button a smidge before the trigger (in my controller set-up), but haven't had success.

So... what's it feel like? :)

My problem is that I use a xbox 360 controller and I dont know what buttons to press to try a pickoff. I have gone into the controller configuration and tried to figure it out but I haven't been able to. Can anyone help me?
