braves45
Windows Media Center stopped working correctly around just over a month ago, what it does is it will open for about 20 seconds before it says that is has stopped working, to get around this I have to minimize Media Center right after I open it and wait until the error appears before I can maximize it again, and then more recently once a program started to record it would not stop so I had to delete the recordings.xml file to temporarily fix that, also every once in a while, after it started to mess up, it will say something like a critical process for Windows Media Center is not working, and the crash log files haven't helped me, so I went to check Event Viewer and now it says that "Event Log service is unavailable. Verify that the service is running" and when I check and try to start it, it says "Windows could not start Windows Event Log service on Local Computer. Error 4201: The instance name passed was not recognized as valid by a WMI data provider". The computer also will not give me administrative privliges, even though it says I am the owner and an administrator. Here are my system specs: Computer Type: HP Pavilion Elite m9340f OS: Vista Home Premium x64 SP2 Processor: Intel® Core™2 Quad CPU Q6700 @ 2.66GHz, 2667 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 4 Logical Processor(s) Motherboard: Asus IPIBL-LB (Benicia) (1 PCI, 2 PCI-E x1, 1 PCI-E x16, 4 DDR2 DIMM, Audio, Video, Gigabit LAN, IEEE-1394) Display: NVIDIA GeForce 9500 GS (512 MB) Disk Drive: Drive #1 - ST3750630AS (698 GB) Optical Drive: HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GH10L Any help is greatly appreciated. MarkB
Try setting the owner of the C:\Windows\System32 folder to the adminstrators group. Right click the folder, click properties, click the security tab, click Advanced, click the Owner tab, click Edit, click Administrators, check the "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects", click Apply, click OK and OK on all preceding windows, then reboot. braves45
I did what you suggested, and it still says stuff, here's one example, you need permission to perform this acton, and the main thing is deleting a file people were saying on microsoft that was causing event viewer to act up and the file is C:\Windows\System32\LogFiles\WM\RtBackup, and I still have had no success with Media Center and I can't reinstall it, because I wasn't given the setup disk when I bought it, and now the place is out of business. And thanks for your suggestions/help because I have tried almost everything I could find that matched my problem(s) and nothing worked.
MarkB
So what errors are you getting now, and when?
braves45
1 For media center, I get an error about 17-20 seconds in saying that there was a problem and it needs to close, but I have been getting around that by minimizing it after it opens wait for the error and maximize. 2 It would record just fine, but a few weeks ago it wouldn't stop recording a show I had set to record and at random times it would say something like a critical process for Windows Media Center did not start (or is not working, something like that) please close Media Center and restart your computer, and that never worked but when that would appear after I would click okay Media Center may or may not close, and to stop the show(s) from recording I just deleted the recordings.xml. 3 The most recent one is Event Viewer(Log) and I discovered that when I tried to see if that would give me more details about the other problems but when I opened it, it said and still says "Event Log service is unavailable. Verify that the service is running" and when I check and try to start it, it says, "Windows could not start Windows Event Log service on Local Computer. Error 4201: The instance name passed was not recognized as valid by a WMI data provider" every single time. Sorry if this is confusing or not what you meant I'm just trying to be as detailed as possible.
braves45
Now after using Vista Manager and Advanced SystemCare, I can now open Media Center without any error messages, but nothing will open inside of it (for example: live and recorded tv, guide, etc.), and also I had the ESPN Bottomline that was made for computers on the computer, but now it won't even start, and when I try to reinstall it I get an error message saying that "lite setup has stopped working" and something to do with Data Execution Prevention.
