Kayxero
I was shocked this morning when I found out. And because my own parents in their 50s arent of the best health it just irks me. Granted reports are saying MJ's death may have been caused by an overdose on painkillers and anti-deps, it is so sad to keep losing great people so young. The great music icons are now all gone imo. Sinatra, Presley, Jackson, Lennon, Hendrix R.I.P. Lets not forget others who have died too young. Heath Ledger, Bernie Mac, Issac Hayes, and Farrah Fawcett. I know some of you may not care, but when I see all these people dying so young, it worries me about those around me as well. I am just shocked. The end

MarkB
Michael Jackson was great (it feels weird typing "was" instead of "is"), but I'm much more concerned with the fact that when I was watching the news this morning, the 8am news was delayed until 8:11am with coverage on Michael Jackson for 11 minutes, then 2 minutes coverage on 3 other stories, then back to Michael Jackson. Given that heart disease is the biggest killer in the U.K., I wonder how many people have died in the U.K. of heart disease or cardiac arrest since Michael Jackson died last night - and why their stories are any less important than that of a pop star. Such is the world we live in. R.I.P. Michael.

Such is the world we live in. R.I.P. Michael. Coverage is like that when an icon dies. Any icon, be it music, sports, art, movies. Basically entertainment icons get so much more press when they kick the bucket than anyone else. Unless its elected official, entertainment icons get all the news buzz when they pass on. JoeRudi26
Anyone old enough to tell me how much Elvis was in the news when he died? I was 11 years old, and I remember it. Not sure if you can quite call it "bigger" yet or not, I guess it depends on how many Michael Jackson sightings there will be for the next 25 years. Seriously though, it was a much different time, there are thousands of more avenues from which to report to the mainstream these days, I'm not sure if it can really be compared, but I can tell you this: I remember where I was and what I was doing when the tv went blank for 30 minutes when they announced that Elvis had died. I don't even remember what I was doing yesterday when I heard about Michael Jackson.

Cavicchi
Janis Joplin, and Jim Morrison are among other rockers that died young. Karen Carpenter also died young and the list goes on and on...
tiedyed
This doesn't even compare to when Elvis died or when John Lennon got killed.
JoeRudi26
This doesn't even compare to when Elvis died or when John Lennon got killed. I was thinking the same thing. It might have to do with the fact that being accused of child molestation (twice, one went to trial) definitely would have an effect on one's image, obviously, even someone this big in pop culture. I realize he was aquitted, so I'll reserve my personal opinions for myself. My point is, Elvis and Lennon never drew negative attention of this magnitude which probably preserved how they were, and still are perceived. Elvis's death was so big and unbelievable, there was a part of society that just wouldn't accept it. I can remember reading about an Elvis sighting every other day. CircleChange11
A lot of the folks you guys are mentioning as "dying young" have often had their own hand involved their deaths. It is tragic and sad, but also preventable in many cases. It's not as if people are forcing them to take tons of pills and/or mind-altering drugs. We're not talking about 9yo's that don't know any better. I don't know how harsh that reads, but seriously a lot of those folks died because of their own drug use/abuse. Now ... about Michael Jackson. I won't say he's "great" but I will say he is mega-talented. Heck, I can remember back to 3rd grade when I had a red MJ jacket with zippers all over it and moonwalked down the hallway. But, as an adult, namely as a parent of 3 kids, all of the rumors/accusations of him "messing around" with kids, prevents me from calling him "great". I don't find anything dealing with pedophilia funny in any way shape or form. It bothers me about how nonchalant we are about the accusations of Jackson. Oh ho hum, Michael's taking advantage of kids again. He was about as weird and eccentric as it gets. But really, if he was a pedophile then dying as a result of pain killers or any other ailment/affliction was better than he deserved. Mega-talent and unlimited-riches does not overshadow harm done to children. I'll stop there, as I'm likely approaching or crossing the line of overkill on that subject. You can also add Jimmy Morrisson and Kurt Cobain to your died/suicide young list. In regards to Michael's life ... I always felt somewhat bad for him because [1] he was so damn weird/tormented, [2] he never really seemed to have any cose friends, and [3] he became his own sideshow ... possibly out of boredom. I agree. I think the folks that are being impacted the most are the ones who are sending Michael jackson "kiddie sex" texts to everyone. Maybe it's just me, but I never found pedophilia jokes all that funny. Tremendously talented musician/artists, over-rated human being.

I did mention others besides drug overdose victims though. Like Isaac Hayes, Ms. Fawcett, and Ol' Blue Eyes. Somehow this thread went on the road of mentioning only drug overdose musicians. I mean yeah thats what Michael is now, but the point I was making is that many people have been leaving this earth young and how it reminds us that life is too short. And a lot of them were not by silly drug decisions.

MalibuKiller
Kurt Cobain was another drama of this kind, maybe sometimes those stars can't handle the pressure one day they begin to take drugs and falling down a long way.
Yankee4Life
Just for the record, Karen Carpenter didn't die from a drug overdose. Very true. She died of heart failure brought upon by the result of the effects her body had from anorexia nervosa. Her death was a huge loss to the entertainment world in 1983. Her style of music may be completely different from what you guys listen to today, but if you get a chance, listen to one of her songs and you'd see for yourself that she had one of the best singing voices ever. Anyhow, no drug overdose here for this person.

Let's not forget Eric "Eazy E" Wright.
