Take Two to get MLB exclusive deal? Bad news for us?

Wait a second. Take 2 purchased a lot of gaming titles from Microsoft a couple months ago which included Links golf among others. In fact I think MS got out of the sports gaming business completely, selling off everything it owned to Take 2.

Microsoft purchased the High Heat code, or "intellectual rights" or the gaming engine.....or whatever else you want to call it from 3DO at auction last year.

I wonder if Take 2 now in affect owns High Heat? Would anyone care then if EA didn't have the exclusive MLB license?

I don't know if the HH code is involved in this or not......interesting conspiracy theory though isn't it.

Regards;

They should make it anyway, fight the SYSTEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

but seriously, that would suck...really bad. Take Two better do a good job with it...or else...Sega should stick to like Sonic or something lol..

-viceman-

and that would cost them millions in lawsuits.

Actually, EA did approach the NFL first, the NFL just didn't offer the exclusive license until this year.

I'm disappointed as a sports gamer, but Take Two had to do something to counter EA.

By the way, do you play GTA? Because Take Two makes it. ;) Take Two who sucks anyhow.

the NFL came to EA this season, true EA had tried in the past to get the rights. But this year NFL came to EA mainly because they were pissed at ESPN for the series "Playmakers" which they forced ESPN to cancel. Now the NFL get their due by signing a deal with the devil. The devil has also bought the ESPN rights, so the NFL is right back where they started

OMG THIS WILL [naughty word] SUK! If there is no MVP baseball it will be a major setback. Look at all the other games that are coming out. ESPN, MLB, for all those consoles. EA is way past that stage. theyve came out with the graphics like that a long time ago. It also be a major setback because we will have to wait for other companines ( 989 for Ex) to progress on there gaming. We will have to wait years for those other baseball games to be up to par with MVP. This has to be stopped and where the ones to do it. We have over 3000 members here. WE CAN MAKE A HUMAN CHAIN AROUNF THE BUILDING!!!! or on the other hand we can right respectful yet pesuasive emails to these dam companies. WE CANNOT LET EA GO DOWN. THIS IS OUR HOUSE AND WE MUST DEFEND IT. WHOS WITH ME!!

THIS SUCKS!

As a PC and Nintendo only gamer (read: A traditional gamer who hates you crazy PS2 and Xbox types), this would deprive me of all MLB game goodness.

I haven't hated Sega this much since the Genesis was outselling the SNES.

(Begins to sob)

On an unrelated (yet somewhat related) note, MLB.com has reached a deal with MLBPA to be the exclusive provider of fantasy baseball. What's with exclusivity these days...whatever happened to good ol' competition

Hey, I might have found good news, according to Gamesindustry.BIZ (via Slashdot), it says here that the deal would only affect people officially using the MLB name, so basically, they'd be able to use the real players and stuff, just not have the official MLB logo present.

Counter-attack to EA's exclusivity binge could see baseball going to Take Two

Publisher Take Two, whose plans for its sports game franchise have been hard hit by a string of exclusive license deals announced by rival Electronic Arts, may be in talks to sign a similar exclusive with Major League Baseball.

The Wall Street Journal has reported that the company is in talks with Major League Baseball for exclusive rights to the brand, in a deal which would act as a counter-move to EA's exclusive signing with the NFL.

According to the report, the negotiations have been made possible by the huge sales of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, with the game's performance exceeding expectations and leaving Take Two with the cash to sign up some exclusives of its own in response to EA's deals.

So far, EA has announced exclusive licenses with the NFL and AFL football leagues, and yesterday the company revealed that it has also signed an exclusive 15 year deal with the ESPN sports broadcaster - whose brand is currently used by Take Two's range of sports titles.

A deal between MLB and Take Two wouldn't change EA's plans in the area, though, as EA doesn't use the MLB branding on its baseball title, MVP Baseball - but smaller rivals in the sector would certainly be squeezed out, such as Sony's MLB range, the latest iteration of which is due out in March.

I question the validity of this article for two main reasons:

1) EA uses the MLB branding on their baseball title, what are they talking about?

2) If this is a third-party exclusive deal as has been widely speculated, Sony's 989 MLB game wouldn't get squeezed out.

I really don't know that this article has all the facts straight.

By the way, here's a vision of the future.

Future headline:

"EA has bought exclusivity to the PGA, NBA, NHL, National Lacrosse League, WNBA, Professional Bowling League, LPGA, MLS, NASCAR, NHRA, CFL, Major League Lacrosse, Little League Baseball, Canadian Curling Association, Japanese Major Leagues, A-League Soccer, the Special Olympics, Rugby Union, all NCAA sports, International Softball Federation, Field Hockey, Cricket, Cape Cod League, The Netherlands Korfball League, Bocce, International Floorball Federation, the Men and Women's handball championships, Major League Roller Hockey league, the Duluth Minnesota Hurling club, United States Women's Polo Federation, Water Polo World League, the Putt-Putt mini-golf league, International Archery Association, the Schenectady NY Pee-Wee Football league, the Good-Will games and the competitive eating league. When asked why so many exclusivities were bought, EA only said: "Let's try and see if anyone other then EA makes a sports game now.".

"Take Two productions are now currently working on Bridge League 2006, expected to be released by Christmas".

damn i should'nt have bought GTA San Andreas LOL

anyway, will this deal affect the team names on MLB? or just the MLB name?

I dunno, but it wouldn't be too hard, just have teams like the "Pittsburgh Bucs", "Cleveland Tribe" and "New York Pinstripes". Which, of course, would be easily changeable with a mod.

The part that really annoys me is that Take Two had already extended its deal with MLB so they were safe regardless. This is just a money wasting stab at EA in a market area that is much smaller than NBA or NFL. Why not spend the money renewing NBA/NHL licenses and trying to secure a deal with Fox Sports?

Geez the NBA (and NHL if it ever restarts) situation is going to be ugly.

I wonder how licensing works for NCAA. Maybe Take Two can take a jab at EA by taking away the college franchises? don't know how that would work

i highly doubt that would happen. I'm still not sure the MLB deal is actually going to go through.

Yeah, I'm hoping it won't go through too. Mainly because this would also hurt the MLB. Think about it: MLB gets a small percentage for every game sold, but let's think about this for a second, if they were to go and get a exclusivity deal with Take Two, they'd only get money (not counting 989 sports and such) from games for 2 systems: PS2 and Xbox. But if they were to get a exclusivity deal from EA, they'd get money from PC, GCN, PS2, XBX, PSP and possibly even DS and GBA in the future. Or better yet, LET BOTH, that way they'd get even more money. And it's not like the NFL, where Madden WAS basically the only game in town EVEN with Take Two's game at 30 dollars. It was THAT GOOD. But neither MVP or whatever the heck Take Two will call there game now are established franchises to the point that Madden is.

What's even more nuts is that, last time I checked, NBA games get more money then Baseball games (this may be because there are like 3 different NBA franchises, 3 different street franchises etc. etc.). So why don't they just go after NBA first? Baseball is the national pasttime, it should be on every and all game systems. There oughta be a law against marketing exclusivity to parts of American culture.

I personally like Madden more, although I heard good things about ESPN. I guess I just trust EA to give me a better product since they've been in it for so long and I am accustomed to their games.
