HypnoxXx
I don't know if anyone else ever does this, but its been something fun I've dabbled in over my years of Triple Play, High Heat and MVP...Creating rosters based on where players began their careers (whether it be who actually signed them first, or who they broke into the majors with) Clemens back with the BoSox...Bonds and Alou moving over to Pittsburgh...Sammy in Texas...An Expos/Nationals team with Randy Johnson, Javier Vazquez and Larry Walker...So many interesting matchups and teammates when you really dive into it... It should be even better to do this year, if MVP 2005 has a really deep Minor League System---the most difficult part has always been leaving some of the more recent teams (i.e. Marlins, Rockies, DRays and DBacks) with gaping holes that you'd be forced to fill with fake players or your own created versions of their best prospects...At least with a deep (I heard the top 30 prospects rumor, that'd be nice) minor league system, you wouldn't have as much trouble filling out a roster with real players... Since I'll probably take a crack at making such a roster again once I grab a copy of 2005, maybe if there is enough interest in such a format, I'll do my best to make it as complete an accurate as possible and put it up on here for download... So some things to ask anyone interested...What's better, their VERY first team, the team they signed with? Or the team they broke into the majors with? This usually isn't a real big deal, but for some players, it can be. Example, Jeff Bagwell would be on the Red Sox under the first scenario, and back with the Astros under scenario two...Just somethin to consider...Suggestions and comments welcome... smart88
I always thought about doing that with mvp baseball 2004, but I would give the Devil Rays Bobby Abreu and Dimitri Young, who were trading almost immediatley after they were drafted. HypnoxXx
I went ahead and finally finished my research (found a cool little site called www.baseball-reference.com to help fill in the holes), so I know where every player on the current 40 man rosters began their careers...Some interesting things I found out.... **The Milwaukee Brewers are not only tied with Boston and St. Louis for least amount of homegrown talent currently on their roster (15), but they also have the least amount of draftees on other teams (7)...Unfortunately, that equals out to a dismal 22 (including very young minor leaguers like Mike Jones and Luis Pena whom MVP probably wouldnt even put in the game) and means they can't even have a true roster of 25** **The Los Angeles Dodgers have the most drafted talent currently on other clubs with 30 (with names such as Ted Lilly, Raul Mondesi, Pedro Martinez and Paul Konerko)...They have 18 homegrown players on their roster** **Second most to have flown the coup? The Toronto Blue Jays with 28 players on other clubs (such as David Wells, Shawn Green and Jeff Kent)** **The Houston Astros may lose Jeff Bagwell and Roger Clemens to Boston, but they'd also have an outfield consisting of Luis Gonzalez and Bobby Abreu joining Berkman, an infield featuring Carlos Guillen, Melvin Mora and Phil Nevin, and a rotation featuring Freddy Garcia and Johan Santana. Yikes!** **Current Yankees Staff: Randy Johnson, Mike Mussina, Carl Pavano, Jaret Wright, Kevin Brown.....Homegrown Yankees Staff: Andy Pettitte, Al Leiter, and pick your poison out of Jose Contreras, Orlando Hernandez, Zach Day, Brad Halsey and Brandon Claussen** **Current BoSox Staff: Curt Schilling, David Wells, Matt Clement, Wade Miller, Bronson Arroyo.....Homegrown Red Sox Staff: Roger Clemens, Carl Pavano, Jeff Suppan, Tomo Ohka and Casey Fossum...But you get Bagwell!** And last but not least, just a few of your homegrown Montreal Expos/Washington Nationals... C Michael Barrett, 2B Mark Grudzielanek, SS Orlando Cabrera; Outfielders Vladimir Guerrero, Larry Walker, Cliff Floyd, Rondell White and Marquis Grissom; Starting Pitchers Randy Johnson, Javier Vazquez, Kirk Rueter, Miguel Batista and Cliff Lee; Bullpen of Ugueth Urbina, Jorge Julio and Antonio Alfonseca...... Kamasutra
love the idea, can't wait to see how it turns out. Obviously lots of work involved there but with actual portraits from these players in their original uniforms, that would make quite a nice project Don't hesitate to ask for help from the roster makers around here. HypnoxXx
Huge "my bad" on Schilling, that's fixed now. So I guess the BOSox dont have that bad of a starting rotation afterall. I'm heading out to various retail stores today to see if they have it on PC, I haven't heard if anyone was able to grab it from Best Buy, Circuit City or Target yet. You're definately right, jpup, doing a roster with such extreme player movement would be extremely time consuming and irritating without RGlass' monster editing machine--any word on if the current version will support the MVP 2005 data files? If not, any word on when he'll have it updated for 2005? Thanks for your support Kama, I appreciate it. Once I have a complete and correct (cant promise that I wont have anymore Schillingesque errors out there on the first try, so PLEASE everyone help me out with any corrections) roster set, if any of you awesome modders wanna take a crack at portraits, feel free--I can only begin to imagine how much work that'd be, and for some of these guys it'd be impossible (i.e. I doubt there's a pic of Bagwell in a Boston cap laying around anywhere)...Hopefully this will be a success as I see there are a few people who feel this is a neat idea especially for simming and seeing who has had the best system over the past 15-20 years. HypnoxXx
imagine this happening for the yankees. They would be a horrible team. They would only have like jeter, matsui and mussina Well, allow me to post what a homegrown Yankees team would look like, since that'd probably interest a few...(btw, Mike Mussina started with Baltimore, he wouldn't be a Yankee) Notable Current Homegrown Yankees: Derek Jeter, Hideki Matsui, Mariano Rivera, Jorge Posada, Bernie Williams. Notable Returning Homegrown Yankees: Andy Pettitte, Brad Ausmus, J.T. Snow, Al Leiter, Mike Lowell, Mike DeJean, Zach Day, Nick Johnson, Alfonso Soriano, Jose Contreras, Orlando Hernandez, Carl Everett... I dont know about you guys, but that still sounds like a formidable lineup. Staff and bullpen not nearly as strong, but still good. In other news...ANY word on RGlass and a new editor? I finally got my copy tonight (after pulling an 0'fer at several stores, I found out we had an EB Games...go there and find no mvp 2005 for the PC so I ask the guy what the deal is and he surprises me by reaching to the floor behind the counter and saying "oh we have ONE left"...Turns out they only shipped the store TWO copies on PC. Wow.) and there's a lot of work to do just to make the 2005 rosters correct, and I'm itchin' to do so along with making the homegrown roster set. HypnoxXx
Schilling started with Boston? I thought he started with Baltimore.... Anywho, This is a GREAT IDEA. I wish I had the PC version... Yeah, I thought he did too, but thanks to the earlier post, I was corrected. I had assumed he was Baltimore remembering all the rookie cards I have of him in an Oriole jersey...But sure enough, he was traded from Boston to Baltimore in 1988 with Brady Andersen for Mike Boddicker. And then traded to Houston....And then Philadelphia...And then Arizona...And then Boston...LoL

HypnoxXx
I'm glad people love the idea...I really cant wait for RGlass's 2005 editor, I've already begun to try and make up to date 2005 rosters the hard way and wow is it a pain. I don't think I've found all the scab players just yet (just remember Lou Merloni and found him on Cleveland's AAA team----so I could move him to Anaheim lol) but I have renamed the ones I have found, renamend Bonds, and took the thread for renaming top prospects and renamed what they had listed and its only taken me oooh 5 hours lol. Now I know why I sat back and reaped the benefits of all the roster sets and datafiles you guys made last year LoL.

mgsports
Good idea! I've done this for Eastside Hockey and NHL Eastside Hockey Manager! It might not work in this game because MLB/Minor League rosters have a limit 25 man rosters and some teams might go over the 100 limit! If their wasn't a roster limit in the game then I would use the rosters!
