RedbirdFan18
Tigers make offseason history Al James/The Detroit News Dec. 10, 2009- The Tigers have set the record for most transactions in a day, let alone an entire offseason. New Detroit GM Casey Gatewood made a flurry of moves today, unprecidented in Major League History. The plethora of moves have been reported individually on sites like MLB.com and MlbTradeRumors, and blogged by us. This is merily a summary of who the Tigers acquire and who they traded. Probably the most notable acquisitions are those of Jayson Werth, Victor Martinez, and Rich Harden, all through trade. The others acquired through trade are Ricky Romero, Cliff Pennington, Kevin Kouzmanoff, Freddy Sanchez, Jon Niese, Pat Burell, Juan Rivera, Travis Snider, and Scot Shields. Not to mention the free agent acqusitions of relievers Juan Cruz and Renyel Pinto. Alll those moves were made in the course of a day. That is not a joke. We interview Gatewood, asking him how it was even possible to make all these trades and signings in a day. "Some of these trades have been in the works for over a month. I think the trade that we most recently started talking about was the trade for Romero and Snider, which we started talks for about a week ago. As for the free agent signing, we started talking to Pinto and Cruz three days ago. It just so happened today was the day that we finalized all these trades and finished the contract negotiations. It was the perfect storm. While we love our new players, we are also said to have trade the likes of Magglio Ordonez, Johnny Damon, Carlos Guillen, Brandon Inge, Ivan Rodriquez, and many others. Some of those guys, such as Mags, Carlos Guillen, and Brandon Inge have spent many years with this organization, and we are said to see them go, but it is for the good of the team." Was his rather long-winded response. Suprisingly, it seems like the Tigers have kept around the same payroll. The money being paid to Harden, V-Mart, and Jayson Werth is less that what was being pai to Ordonez, Guillen, and Johnny Damon. The other players are all rather young and cheap or just cheap, Looking at the books, the Tigers have added barely over $2 million dollars in payroll. Now, that will go up as the organization plans to sign Werth, Harden, and V-Mart to extensions, as they are all eligible for free agency next off-season. Long story short, today has catapulted the Tigers to the head of the pack in the American League. Anything short of a World Series win this year will be a huge disappointment. If the Tigers extended Werth, Harden, and V-Mart, the teams core of those 3, Verlander, Porcello, Austin Jackson, Miguel Cabrera, and young Travis Snider will all be together for atleast another 2 years. There is no doubt this team will be a heavy favorite every year. Everyone should be looking forward to this season, and the seasons after. The Tigers may have just become the best team in the MLB. RedbirdFan18
Tigers "change' Mascot as early April fool's joke Al James/The Detroit News March 3, 2010 - As an April Fool's joke, the Tigers (in partnership with Kellogg's) held a "press conference" unveiling a new mascot. That mascot? Tony the Tiger. Most fans realized it was a joke, and found it very amusing. Casey Gatewood says "We partnered with Kellogg's to pull this off. We though it would be a good prank, and the money generated from the media coverage will go to a fund to help children in need". We interviewed Tigers manager Jim Leyland. "I honestly somewhat liked the new mascot. That is some good cereal. My grandkid's eat it every morning".
