Hold Ball/cancel Throw

Not sure if this has been covered before, but I haven't been able to find any information on it.

So how do you actually pull this off? I remember trying this in 2K10 and maybe 2K9 with no success, and can't do it in 2k11 either.

I know there's a button called "Hold the ball" (RT on xbox 360 controller), but it never works?

I have tried holding the trigger then pressing the button to throw, as well as pressing the throw button and then pressing the trigger, or pressing the trigger while the trow meter is going, but the fielder always just throws the ball.

Any ideas?
