inflamedpersona
So essentially, I'm trying to weigh my options between manually updating MVP '05 or buying the Show -- either '10 or '11 -- for PS2. I've heard great things about its PS3 companions, but since I'm a college student -- and, thereby, the idea of buying a PS3 for one game is downright laughable -- I'm only looking at the PS2 version(s). I have MVP for the Gamecube and, thus, must update it by hand, further complicating the decision. I love MVP to death, but my sample size for comparison essentially consists of MVP and the garbage 2K series. I really would rather not have to rent the game to make a decision, because the great thing about MVP is its longevity and replay value. For example, if I have a few bad games on MVP, I know it isn't a fault of the game, it's merely symptomatic of the variety of play the game has to offer; if I have a few bad games on the Show, though, I probably won't be able to know for sure if it's a result of the game or just me. What are everyone's thoughts? Pros and cons to both would be nice. I'm just trying to decide whether the time/money investment(s) would be worthwhile. inflamedpersona
Yeah, I wish I had MVP for PC, but it's tough to find a legitimate copy for under 50 bucks anymore. There is a part of me that secretly loves doing roster edits, but that part of me learns to shut up after about three teams' worth of effort... which is why I'm debating between $29 for The Show '11 or the 2-4 weeks of manual editing for Gamecube. Here's what I'm thinking so far: MVP: - Intuitive control scheme - Essentially near-perfect in terms of realism on All-Pro with Sliders - Really like the accuracy meters for both pitching and throwing - Good players usually play well, poor players usually don't; I hit .337 with Joe Mauer and .236 with Nick Punto in the same season, which is nice considering my input is essentially equal for each player - Lacks a (really) good balance for pitch counts; I can be losing 4-0 in the 3rd inning and my starter will still have only thrown 30 pitches - Kinda sick of having to do owner mode every time I start a Twins franchise so I don't have to play at the Dome anymore - The 5/10 point tier system for a lot of attributes makes things seem a little too structured - Again, the 2-4 weeks of solid effort to get the rosters up to date The Show (what I've gathered from Youtube videos and playing a demo at Gamestop, I believe) - Isn't remotely related to 2K - Good presentation - Everything is relatively up-to-date (although no Nishioka on the Twins? Wasn't that finalized a LONG time ago?) - Road to the Show, buggy as people might claim it is, is still a cool break-in-the-action feature - The collapsing ball style of judging fly balls, which seems to be the solution for the fly ball indicator/no fly ball indicator debate - A lot more foul balls and high pitch counts on stock settings, something MVP has issues with even with sliders - Some pitches seem to have a mind of their own; I can hit a perfect pitch and it'll fly outside. Can't decide if I like that or not - Everyone seems to have almost the same exact batting stance. Joe Mauer, the cover athlete, is even not quite right - Doesn't seem to have as much information available to use against opposing hitters; hot and cold zones didn't seem to have much of an effect I might just buy it used off Amazon, and if I don't like it after a couple weeks, I'll just return it. shinderhizzle84
I played MLB the show on the ps2 for the longest time (from 06 all the way to 10 until I recently got a PS3 for 11) and I have to say the differences between the ps3 version and the ps2 version are incredibly slim. I mean, the ps3 has a couple of new minor features and (obviously) has way better graphics but the actual gameplay and gamemodes and whatnot are exactly identical on both versions. So it really comes down to: Great gameplay and up to date rosters and better graphics (than MVP, at least IMO) compared to MVP, which is a legendary game, no doubt, albeit incredibly outdated and very simple compared to a game like the show. It all comes down to what you prefer more: a simplified baseball game like MVP or a more complex game such as The Show.
royhobbs
MVP. had 2k on 360. hated it. had the show, couldn't do it. MVP is still where it's at for me. love the minors. you get to play and you are basically a gm at the same time. nothing else has touched it. i know gameplay and graphics are superior on the newer systems, but i love the complete control of an organization. still play on xbox unmodded, unfortunately. ANY OLD ROSTERS? ANY FILE WILL DO. ONE THAT DOESN'T FREEZE.
JoeKirby
Say I wanted to play a franchise where I will play more than one year and want to have complete control of my team as in, I don't want players to retire at the age they normally do, I'd like them to stay there, which game should I get MVP or The Show?
