Giants star Christy Mathewson was among the first big leaguers to enlist and serve during World War I. During the World War I era, the first organized teams began to appear, and by World War II, major league stars in their prime including Joe Dimaggio, Ted Williams, and Hank Greenberg put their careers on hold to enlist. In fact, as a result of his military service, Greenberg only played 9 full seasons in the majors, and Ted Williams could possibly have hit 700 home runs if not for 5 years of service. After World War II, all of the branches of the Military cut down their firepower, and baseball in the Armed Forces returned to amateur level. During the Vietnam era, men such at Garry Maddox and Jim Bibby served overseas before their careers took off. The trend seemed to almost disappear, as very few players in recent history served. The most notable is Iraq veteran and former Marine Cooper Brannan who recieved a minor league contract with the San Diego Padres in 2006. Today The Military All-Stars travel the country and take on various college and minor league teams, and are the only American joint forces team in the world. stecropper
Thanks Much --- as this brings back really great memories I have from when I actually played with the Marine Corp Western Pacific traveling team during the Vietnam era in the late '60s & early '70s. I had the pleasure of playing with Carlos May (of the Chicago White Sox) at Camp Pendleton California as he played with the Marine Air Wing Team there. We played only against other Military Teams throughout the Western Pacific in those days. I spent 6 years in the Corp and that year & 1/2 were some of the best of those times of course! My regular job in the Corp was as a Computer Systems Programmer which is what I pursued after leaving the Corp versus Baseball as I was a bit too old for any serious baseball attempts at that time. Really Appreciate what you have done here ! Thanks Again, Don
