superciuc
Game 1 preview: Detroit Tigers vs New York YankeesLineups Starting pitchers: Justin Verlander: He won 18 games in 2010, posting a 3.37 ERA with 219 strikeouts. He's the kind of ace you want in your rotation, even tough in 2010, on the road, he had a 6-6 record with a 4.45 ERA. So, if he improves his away record, he can become a 20-game winner. Also, look at the BB/9 ratio: 2.8. This guy doesn't walk many batters CC Sabathia: CC won 21 games and had a 3.18 ERA in 2010. So, the question is: what this guy has to do to win the Cy young award? He pitched amazingly well, carrying the Yankees to the playoffs. Also, Sabathia has a tendency to pitch better during day games (2.67 ERA compared to a 3.50 ERA during night games). superciuc
CC not at his best as Yanks drop game 1 to TigersA-rod homers in loss; Ordonez drives in 3boxscore Game recap: It wasn't a good opening day overall for the Yankees: Sabathia didn't pitch well, and the Yankees bats weren't anywhere good. Things actually started out good for the Yanks as they managed to take Verlander out of the game after just 3.1 innings. After 3 scoreless innings, A-Rod broke the tie with a solo shot, then Teixeira got a walk, and Cano followed with a single, then back-to-back walks to Posada and Martin made the score 2-0. But then Zumaya came in: he struck out Gardner and retired Jeter to end the inning, and then managed to throw 5 scoreless innings, giving up 4 hits and 6 walks. In the 5th, the Tigers answered: CC gave up 3 straight hits to load the bases, and after retiring Jackson, Ordonez drove in 2 with a single, and then Cabrera followed with another RBI. Sabathia gave up 2 more runs in the seventh: he went 6.1 innings, gave up 5 runs, 11 hits, struck out 3, and got the loss. In the 9th, the Yankees loaded the bases; but with 1 out, Valverde came in and struck out Posada and Jones to end the game. "it wasn't a great day for CC" said Girardi "but the problem was our hitting, we just couldn't hit with runners in scoring position". The Yankees went 0-for-12 with RISP and left 15 runners on base. Also, they left 3 times the bases loaded. A-rod homers in the fourth Cabrera gives the Tigers the lead Detroit notables Magglio Ordonez: 3-for-5, 3 RBI Miguel Cabrera: 2-for-4, RBI, 2B Brandon Inge: 3-for-3, 2 R, 2B New York notables Alex Rodriguez: 1-for-4, R, RBI, BB, HR Robinson Cano: 3-for-5, 2B Jorge Posada: 2-for-4, 2B, BB

superciuc
Game 2 preview: Detroit Tigers (1-0) vs New York Yankees (0-1) Lineups Starting pitchers Max Scherzer: Young Max Scherzer pitched really well in 2010: he had a 12-11 record, but he posted a really good 3.50 ERA, along with 184 strikeouts in 195.2 innings. In his only start in 2010 against the Yankees, he pitched 6 shutouts innings, gave up 2 hits and got the win. Phil Hughes: Phil Hughes wants to repeat, and possibly improve what he has done in the 2010 season: 18-8 record, 4.19 ERA, 146 Ks. He put up really good numbers for a pitcher that used to be a reliever in 2009. Actually, he'd like to improve his ERA at home: in 2010, it was 4.66. In 2010, he won both of his starts against the Tigers.
superciuc
Hughes dominant as Jeter drives in 4 RBIs in winHughes goes 8 innings, strikes out 9boxscore Game recap Hughes was dominant in today's game, pitching 8 inning of 1-run ball, striking out 9 to earn the win. It started just about fine for the Yanks: in the 2nd inning, Posada got a 2-out walk, followed by a single by Martin, and the Scherzer allowed another walk to Gardner. With the bases loaded and 2 outs, Captain clutch delivered: a bases-clearing double by Derek Jeter, that gave the Yanks a 3-0 lead. Troubles came for young Hughes in the 3rd inning: a lead off Home-run by Brandon Inge made it 3-1. Jackson then singled, and he managed to get to second base thanks to a sac bunt by Martinez, but Phil Hughes retired Cabrera and struck out Raburn to end the frame. In the 4th, the Yankees got a deja vù feeling by seeing Zumaya coming in to pitch with 2 outs and Gardner at first: but Gardner managed to steal second and El Capitan drove in another RBI, making it 4-1. Scherzer got the loss, as he gave up 5 hits and 4 runs in 3.2 innings. In the 7th inning, Alex Rodriguez hit a 2-run HR that made the score 6-1. In the 8th, the Yanks got one more run, to make the score 7-1. Robertson then pitched a scoreless 9th to end the game. "It was a good game" said Girardi "it's good to see Phil pitching well, and we got some 2-out RBIs, so that's fine". The Yankees are now 1-1 in the young season. Jeter clears the bases with a 3-RBI double A-rod hits HR no.2 of the season Detroit notables Alex Avila: 2-for-4, 2B Brandon Inge: 1-for-4, R, RBI, HR New York notables Phil Hughes (W, 1-0): 8.0 IP 6 H 1 ER 1 BB 9 K Derek Jeter: 2-for-3, R, 4 RBI, BB, 2B Alex Rodriguez: 2-for-5, R, 2 RBI, HR
