He pitched better in 2009, but he's still young and he can still improve his stats. Actually he had a good BB/9 ratio (2.1) . He went 1-1 with 4.50 ERA against the Yankees last season. A.J Burnett: Burnett struggled in 2010, winning just 10 games and having a 5.26 ERA. He also led the league in HBP (19) and walked 78 batters in 186.2 innings. Cano walks off as Yankees win 12-11Rivera blows the save; Yanks still win itboxscore Game recap It was a showcase of power between the Yanks and the Tigers as 23 runs were scored in today's game. The Yankees struck first in the second inning: Texeira led off with a base hit, Swisher then walked, and Posada hit a RBI double to make it 1-0. Martin followed with another RBI, then Porcello allowed back-to-back walks to Jeter and Granderson to make the score 4-0. Porcello was removed from the game as he went just 1.1 innings, giving up 4 hits, 6 runs and 3 walks. A-Rod hit a 2 RBI single off Schlereth to make it 6-0. But the Tigers struck back in the 3rd: after Burnett surrendered 3 straight hits to Peralta, Inge and Jackson, Martinez and Cabrera got back-to-back RBI singles, and Raburn added insult to injury with a 2 RBI double. The Yankees managed to score one more run in the bottom of the 3rd thanks to an errant throw by shorstop Johnny Peralta. But the Tigers tied in the 4th: after back-to-back singles by Avila and Ordonez, Guillen hit a 3-run bomb to tie the game. The Yankees got the lead back in the 5th as Schlereth walked both Swisher and Martin, then Gardner singled to load the bases. And with the bases loaded, Jeter hit into a fielder's choice, making the score 8-7; but the inning wasn't over: with 2 outs, the Grandy man delivered with a RBI single. The Yanks then scored one more run in the 6th to make it 10-7. But the Tigers weren't done yet: in the 7th, Peralta doubled to lead off the inning, he was then followed by Inge with a single. With men at the corners, Girardi decided to pull Burnett out of the game. he went 6, gave up 11 hits, 10 runs (8 earned) and struck out only 1. Even with Soriano on the mound, things didn't change: Jackson got a RBI single, then Martinez moved the runners over to second and third with a sac bunt. Soriano struck out Cabrera, and Raburn with 2 outs hit an easy fly ball to right but Swisher dropped the ball, allowing Jackson and Inge to score. The score was 10-10. The Yankees quickly got the lead back: Cano was walked, and Swisher got on base with a single, then Jorge Posada drove in the run with another single. In the 9th, Rivera came in to close the game, but Miguel Cabrera had other plans as he smashed the first pitch of the at bat into the seats, tying the game. Rivera then gave up one more hit, but got out of the inning with a double play. In the 9th, with Benoit on the mound, Jeter got a lead off walk, then Granderson singled and they both advanced thanks to a wild pitch. A-rod was walked to load the bases and Valverde was called in to pitch: he struck out Texeira but then gave up the winning base hit to Robinson Cano. The final score was 12-11. "It was a long game. Burnett didn't make his best start, and our bullpen wasn't that great" said Girardi "but our offense was great, we showed great patience at the plate, and managed to score 12 runs." The Yankees got 12 walks and 15 hits today. "First pitch fastball and next thing you know it's out of the park: a rough way to start the season" Said Rivera. Not too many strikeouts, 78 in 130.2 innings, but not too many walks either. In 2010, he was 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA against the Yankees. Ivan Nova: Rookie Ivan Nova will face his first season as a starter in the New York Yankees rotation. In 2010, he pitched 42 innings, and he went 1-2 with a 4.50 ERA. The Twins struck first in the second, with a solo shot by Young and a 2 RBI double by Nishioka. The Yankees cut the lead to half in the 3rd with a RBI single by Jones. In the 4th, after getting two quick outs, Nova had to leave the game. "he injured his right hand, but he'll be fine and he's going to pitch in his next start" said Joe Girardi. Nova went 3.2 innings, gave up 7 hits, 2 runs, 1 walk and struck out 4. Silva came in to pitch and he surrendered 3 straight hits to the Twins, including a RBI single by Thome. But in the 5th the Yanks came back: Jeter was walked with one out, and Granderson followed with a single, Teixeira then got RBI no.1 of the season. A-Rod was walked, and Duensing was pulled out of the game: he went 4.1 innings, gave up 7 hits, 4 runs, 3 walks and got the loss. With the bases loaded and Mijares on the mound, Cano struck out: but Swisher delivered with a 2 RBI single, then another 2 RBI single by Martin made the score 6-3. In the 8th inning, with the score being 8-4, 2 outs and Boone Logan on the mound, the Twins tried to come back: Kubel singled, Mauer walked and Morneau hit a RBi single. Loogan intetionally walked Thome and RIvera came in to get a 4 out save: he needed just one pitch to retire Young to end in the inning and got a quick 1-2-3 inning to end the game. Against the Yankees in 2010 he made 2 starts, going 0-1 with a 4.09 ERA. Freddy Garcia Veteran Freddy Garcia had a tough season in 2010, going 12-6 with a 4.64 ERA, especially his H/9 ratio was way too high (9.8 ) and his HR/9 was high as well (1.3). But the Twins scored 3 in the 3rd as Garcia gave up 6 hits and 3 runs, including a RBI single to Morneau and 2 RBI single by Thome. Cuddyer made it 4-2 with a RBI single. After the 5th, Garcia was removed from the game: he went 5, gave up 11 hits, 3 runs and got the loss. Baker instead, went 6, gave up 4 hits, 2 earned runs, 3 walks and struck out 4, he got the W. After the 6th, the Twins bullpen was great: Jeff Manship pitched 2 shutout innings and Nathan got the first save of the year with a perfect 9th. "You hate to see that, scoring 2 in the first 2 innings and then none in the rest of the game" said Girardi "Actually Garcia, even if he didn't have his best stuff, kept us close, and our bullpen was good as well." He never faced the Yankees in 2010, but in 2009 he got no decisions against them. CC Sabathia (0-1, 7.11 ERA) Sabathia went 6.1 innings, gave up 11 hits and 5 runs in his first start of 2010. The Yankees got the lead in the 1st thanks to a couple of walks allowed by Pavano to Jeter and Rodriguez and a RBI single by Mark Teixeira. in the 4th the Yankees expanded their lead thanks to a 2 RBI single by Nick Swisher. Sabathia had a few problems in the 6th, when he gave up 3 straight hits, including a 2 RBI double to Morneau, and 2 runs. After a RBI single by Martin that made it 4-2, Sabathia pitched a scoreless 7th. He went 7 innings, allowed 7 hits, 2 runs and struck out 5. Carl Pavano, instead, went only 3.2 inning, allowed 5 hits, 3 runs and 2 walks. The Yankees bullpen was lights out as both Soriano and Rivera pitched 2 perfect innings. Rivera got his second save of the season. "CC pitched really well today, he gave up 2 runs in the 6th, but besides that, he located his pitches very well, and got a few Ks" said Girardi. In 2010 he pitched twice against the Yankees, going 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA. Phil Hughes (1-0, 1.13 ERA) Phil Hughes was dominant in his first start of 2010, getting the win, going 8 innings and striking out 8. He hasn't pitched against the Twins since 2009. Liriano, pitched extremely well, going 6.1 shutouts inning, allowing 4 hits, 2 walks and striking out 9. The first 2 runs of the ballgame came in the 7th: Cuddyer singled, then stole second, Valencia got another single and moved Cuddyer at 3rd, Nishioka drove in the RBI, and then, after Casilla got another single, an errant throw by Andruw Jones allowed Valencia to score. In the bottom of the 8th, the Yankees scored their only run of the game, thanks to a solo homer by Curtis Granderson. In the 9th, Nathan allowed a base hit, but then managed to retire the other 3 batters he faced. "About Hughes, we will have to make a move, i already spoke to Cashman, and we're going through all the options that we have." said Girardi. "He's the man we need" said Girardi "he's a veteran, he knows how to pitch in the AL east." Pettite will make his first start the 13th of April at Yankee stadium against the Orioles. As for today's game, the Yankees managed to score early against Buchholtz, thanks to a 2 RBI single by Cano and a RBI single by Posada. But the Red Sox wasted no time, as Adrian Gonzaled made it 3-2 with a 2 run homer, and Youkillis tied with another RBI. But the Yankees were back on top, thanks to a lead off solo shot by Mark Teixeira. Buchholtz was removed from the game, as he went just 2 innings, gave up 5 hits, 4 run, 3 walks. The Red Sox tied the game in the bottom of the frame, with another RBI by Gonzalez. But the Red Sox bullpen imploded in the 4th: with men at 1st and 2nd, Curtis Granderson delivered the big blow, a 3 run home run, that made it 7-4. At the end of the inning the score was 10-4. But in the 3rd, the Red Sox came back: Gonzalez tied it with a RBI double and then J.D. Drew and Kevin Youkillis went back-to-back with 2 HRs. Saltalamacchia added insult to injury with another big fly in the 6th and Nova was removed from the game: he went 5 innings, 10 hits, 6 runs, 1 walk and gave up 3 homers. He got the loss. In the 8th, the Yankees tried to comeback: Texeira drove in second RBI of the game, and Posada homered to make it 6-4. It was last batter Lackey faced: he went 7.2 innings, gave up 8 hits, 4 runs, 4 walks and struck out 13 to win his first game of the season. Papelbon came in and retired Swisher. in the bottom of the 8th, any chance of a comeback was quickly swept away thanks to a 3-run home run by Carl Crawford. Papelbon then pitched a scoreless 9th to earn the save. Neither team scored until the 6th, when Curtis Granderson broke the tie with a solo HR, the 3rd in 4 games. Beckett would go 6.1 innings, allowing 3 hits, 1 run and striking out 8. Freddy Garcia was cruising until the 7th, when the Red Sox tied it with 2 back-to-back hits, a double by Saltalamacchia and a RBI single by Scutaro. Garcia retired Lowrie, and then would be removed from the game. "it's a decision you have to make, with the game tied and a lefty hitter coming up, we needed Logan on the mound. It bothers me that Garcia didn't get the win, but winning the game is the most important thing." Garcia went 6.2 innings, gave up 5 hits, 1 run, 2 walks and struck out 5. In the 8th, the Yankees got the lead back: Granderson got a base hit, and another single by A-rod moved him to 3rd. A-rod stole 2nd, and Texeira got the walk, and with the bases loaded Cano hit a 2 RBI single. Martin would make the game 4-1 with another RBI single. In the bottom of the 8th, Logan retired Ellsbury, gave up a hit to Gonzalez and managed to strike out Ortiz. The Red Sox sent Cameron in the game to pinch-hit, and the Yankees sent Rivera to close the game: Cameron was retired, and Rivera managed to pitch a scoreless 9th, altough giving up 2 singles, to save it.
