He's going to face the Yankees for the first time in his career CC Sabathia (1-1, 4.73 ERA) Sabathia went 7 strong innings against the Twins as he got the first win of the season. superciuc Posted August 27, 2011 Author Share Posted August 27, 2011 O's take opener thanks to 9th inning homerSabathia struggles; O's win it thanks to HRboxscore Game recap It was a rough game for the Yanks, as the O's managed to score 2 in the 9th to take game 1 of the series: The Yankees scored 2 in the first, thanks to a single by Jeter, followed by a double by Granderson and a sac fly by Texeira. Cano hit a RBI double to make it 2-0. In the 2nd Posada hit a lead-off solo shot to make it 3-0. In the 3rd the O's made it 3-1 thanks to 2 doubles by Hardy and Jones, and in the 4th, they got the lead with a 2 RBI single by Hardy and a RBI single by Wieters. Britton, tho, didn't get the win, as he went just 3 innings, gave up 6 hits and 3 runs. in the 6th Swisher tied it with a solo homer, but the O's were quickly back on top with a RBI double by Markakis, and the Yankees in the bottom half of the inning, tied the game again thanks to a leadoff triple by Jeter and RBI single by Granderson. Texeira and Cano both got walked, but neither Swisher or Posada couldn't drive in the go-ahead run with the bases loaded. In the 9th, Adam Jones delivered the big blow: a 2-run home run off Joba Chamberlain. The Yankees never managed to comeback and the score remained 7-5. Against the Yankees he's 4-9 with a 5.15 ERA. Andy Pettite Andy Pettitte pitched extremely well last season, going 11-3 with a 3.28 ERA. In his career, he's 27-6 with a 3.52 ERA against the Orioles. Pettitte got some support early by the Yankees bats: Derek Jeter, leading off in the 1st, sent the 3rd pitch he saw into the left field seats. It was his 1st HR of the season. After the HR by Jeter, Granderson singled, A-rod walked and Teixeira hit another HR: a 3-run blast to make it 4-0. in the 2nd the Yankees kept on rolling thanks to a 2 RBI double by Rodriguez. Guthrie left the game after only 1.2 innings as he gave up 6 hits, 6 runs and 2 walks. in the 3rd, the Yankees scored again thanks to a RBi single by Jorge Posada. Pettitte pitched amazingly well until the 7th inning when he gave up a 2-run HR to Luke Scott. He pitched a perfect 8th and then was removed from the game. in the 8th, Jeter drove in another RBI with a sac fly to make it 8-2, and in the 9th Robertson struck out the side to end the game. "Those are the kind of games you like to see if you're a manager: you score early, your pitcher doesn't give up many runs and goes 8 solid innings." said Girardi. "It was a great performance: i pitched well, i located my pitches really well and got the win" said Andy Pettitte. Last season against the Yankees he won both of his starts and had a 3.65 ERA. AJ Burnett (1-0, 9.00 ERA) Burnett struggled so far in 2011. He got the win against the Red Sox, but he gave up 11 hits and 4 runs in 6 innings. In his past 2 outings he gave up 22 hits in 12 innings. In the 6th, Scott hit a leadoff double, and Burnett was pulled from the game. He went 5 innings, gave up 8 hits and 2 runs. "he pitched better than last time, but there's room for improvement: he needs to give up less base hits, and he needs to locate his pitches better" said Girardi. With Scott at first, Silva came in, and things got worse: he surrender a 2-run HR to Reynolds, making the score 3-0. But the Yankees came back in the 6th with a RBI double by Swisher and a 2 RBI double by Posada. Arrieta was pulled from the game after 5.1 innings, finishing with 6 hits and 3 runs allowed, as well as 4 walks. With the score tied at 3 in the 7th, Markakis got a RBI single to make it 4-3, and then Silva allowed another HR, this time to Vladimir Guerrero, a solo shot. The Yankees looked like they couldn't come back, but in the 8th, Posada was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, Gardner hit a double and Jeter got a walk: and with the bases loaded and 2 outs, A-Rod delivered the big 3 RBI double making the score 6-5. The Rangers scored early thanks to a solo HR by Nelson Cruz in the second. In the 4th Nova struggled as he allowed a walk to Hamilton, a single to Moreland and the big blow, a 3 run HR to Mike Napoli. Nova went just 3.2 innings, allowed 5 runs, 4 hits and 1 walk. In the 5th the Yanks managed to get on the board thanks to a couple of walks and a uncommon RBI hit by pitch by Mark Texeira. Feldman kept on rolling: he pitched 8 innings, allowed 3 hits, 3 walks, 1 run and struck out 12 to get his first win of the season. In the 9th the Rangers scored 2 more runs to make it 7-1, and O'Day struck out the side to end the game. "Well, it's a tough game to lose, but when you get just 3 hits, and when your starter goes just 3 innings, you can't pretend to win it. We'll need to play better tomorrow." said Girardi. Yankees win it in extras thanks to homersGarcia pitches great but Mo blows saveboxscore Game recap Both starters pitched amazingly well, and both starters couldn't get the win: Webb went 5 solid innings and Garcia carried a shutout into the 8th inning, but then Mariano Rivera unusually blew the save. The Yankees struck first, with a RBI single by A-rod, and in the 6th, they scored 2 more thanks to a couple of RBIs by Posada and Gardner. But the Rangers came back: in the 8th inning Hamilton hit a 2 RBI double, and with him at second, Cruz was intentionally walked. Rivera came in to get the final out of the 8th, but in the 9th inning Napoli and Young got back to back singles, Davis lined out, and Kinsler loaded the bases with another single. Borbon then grounded out in what could have been a game ending double play, but the relay throw by Cano was just a little too late, and Rangers tied the game at 3. Rhodes struck out the side in the 9th, and after both Rhodes and Robertson tossed a scoreless 10th, things got interesting in the 11th: the Rangers got the lead with a RBI triple by Davis, but in the bottom of the inning, the Yankees went back-to-back to win it: first Texeira, and after him, Cano hit the walk-off HR that ended the game. Hunter pitched well too, but Granderson homer assured the Yankees a big enough lead to take the series. The Yankees to an early lead in the second thanks to 2 walks allowed to Texeira and Swisher and a RBI single by Posada. In the 5th the Yanks expanded their lead as Posada walked and Jeter singled: with men at the corners, the Grandy man hit a big 3-run home run to make it 4-0. Hunter was removed after the 5th: he allowed 5 hits, 4 runs, 3 walks and struck out 7. Sabathia carried a shutout into the 6th, until Napoli broke it with a solo shot. Sabathia went 6.1 innings, gave up 10 hits, 1 run and struck out 6. The bullpen was outstanding as Robertson went 1 inning, and with man at 1st, 1 out and Hamilton at the plate, Logan got a big double play to end the inning. Rivera got the save, tossing a perfect 9th. "the bullpen did well today, the last thing we wanted is to blow the lead like we did yesterday, but Mo this time was outstanding, and Robertson and Loogan were great as well." said Girardi. In his career, he's 21-12 with a 4.16 ERA against the Blue Jays. Kyle Drabek (2-0, 2.21 ERA) Drabek got the no decision against the Mariners in his last start, as he went 5.2 innings, gave up 4 runs and 4 hits. He allowed just 1 run in his 2 previous starts. The Yanks scored first in the second thanks to a bases loaded walk allowed to A-rod, and a sac fly by Cano. the Jays answered in the bottom of the inning with a solo shot by Bautista. In the 5th, Kyle Drabek left the game with a back injury, he went 4.1, gave up 6 hits and 2 runs. IN the 6th the Yankees scored again, with a 2 RBI single by Granderson and another RBI single by A-rod. In the 6th the Jays scored 3 runs as Arencibia, Escobar and Rivera drove in 3 RBIs. Pettitte went 5.2 innings, gave up 10 hits and 4 runs. In the bottom of the 9th, with men at 1st and 2nd and 2 outs, Hill won it with a walk-off 3 run HR. "it's tough, you score early and the bullpen lets you down.But against a team like the Jays, it can happen" Said girardi. Shawn Camp (0-1, 6.43 ERA) Camp is starting the game because of Drabek's injury. He's a reliever so don't expect him to go that long in this game. And those 5 runs came all with 2 outs. It was a RBI single by Cano, a RBI single by Swisher and a big 3-run HR by Posada. In the 2nd the Jays got on the board thanks to, guess who? Aaron Hill: a solo shot, no.7 of the year. The Yanks score again in the 5th thanks to a RBI double by Posada and a RBI single by Martin. in the 6th Cano drove in another RBI with a double. Burnett was good until the 7th, when he gave up 3 conescutive hits. He went 6 innings, gave up 9 hits, 3 runs and struck out 8. Chamberlain allowed 2 more runs in the 8th, and with the bases loaded and 1 out in the 9th, Rivera came in and got the final 2 outs of the game.
