The Jays got the lead early, as Lind got an RBI single. Teixeira tied it later with a solo shot, but the Blue Jays scored 2 in the 4th, thanks to a couple of RBI singles by Rivera and Escobar. In the 4th the Yanks got the lead back, thanks an errant throw by Arrencibia that allowed a runner to score, and a 2 RBI single by Gardner. But the Jays tied the game with a RBI single by Rivera. Posada tied the game again with a RBI single in the bottom of the 5th. In the 6th, the Jays rallied as Bautista got a RBI single, Lind got a RBI double and Encarnacion hit a big 3-run HR. The Yanks weren't able to comeback as they lost 9-6. He never pitched against the Tigers in his career. Brad Penny (2-2, 3.67 ERA) Penny went 4.2 innings, gave up 3 runs, 5 hits and got the lost against the Mariners in his last start. A-Rod 4th inning grand slam helped the Yanks win the opener, and on the mound a combination of Nova (4 runs in 5 innings) and Chamberlain (4 shutout innings) was enough for the Yankees. The Yanks started out early thanks to a RBI single by Cano and a RBI walk by Posada. In the 2nd the Yanks scored another run thanks to a wild pitch by Penny. Penny went just 1.2 innings, gave up 3 hit, 3 runs, 5 walks and got the loss. In the 4th the Yanks took a 7-0 lead thanks an A-bomb by A-Rod: HR no.7 of the season, and RBI no. 28 (leading the MLB). Nova gave up 4 runs and 2 innings, and Chamberlain tossed 4 shutout innings. Mariano Rivera wasn't called in to pitch in the 9th: "it was a 3 run lead, but Chamberlain was cruising, so i decided to let him stay in the game" said Girardi. Against the Tigers he's 18-8 with a 3.88 ERA Phil Coke (2-1, 3.51 ERA) Phil Coke went 5 innings, gave up 4 hits and 1 runs as he got the decision against the Mariners in his last start. Tigers win it with walk-off in extrasTex homers twice in lossboxscore Game recap Extra innings were required today as the Yanks managed to tie the game in the 9th, after the Tigers had come back twice during the game. The Tigers got the lead in the 3rd with a RBI single, but the Yanks scored 3 in the 5th thanks to a 3-run HR by Teixeira. Coke went 4.2 innings, gave up 5 hits, 2 runs and a walk. The Tigers came back in the 6th thanks to a bases-clearing triple by Cabrera. Garcia was removed from the game, after going 5.2 innings, giving up 12 hits and 4 runs. In the 8th inning, Mark Teixeira gave the Yankees the lead with another HR, this time good for 2 runs. But Victor Martinez answered with another 2-run HR. The score was 6-5 in the 9th, when Gardner went all the way to 3rd thanks to an errant throw by Valverde and scored after a RBI single by Jeter. The score remained tied until the 12th, when Guillen hit a RBI walk-off single to win it. Justin Verlander (1-2, 3.12 ERA) Verlander got a no-decision against the Indians in his last start, as he went 6.2 innings, gave up 7 hits, 2 runs (1 earned) and struck out 7. The Tigers scored first thanks to a solo shot by Alex Avila, and then scored again thanks to a 2 RBI double by Raburn. The Yankees got on the board in the 6th thanks to a 2-RBI triple by Cano. Verlander went 6 innings, gave up 5 hits, 2 runs and struck out 5. The Tigers kept on scoring as Ordonez hit a RBI single in the 6th. The Yankees tied the score thanks to a couple of singles by Posada and Gardner, who stole second base after getting on first. With men at 2nd and 3rd, captain clutch Derek Jeter delivered with a 2 RBI single. But the Tigers got the lead again: after a triple by Raburn, Sabathia was removed from the game:he went 6.1 innings, gave up 9 hits, 5 runs, 3 walks and struck out 4. Robertson came in to pitch trying to keep the game tied, but Peralta hit a RBI single. In the 9th, Valverde came in to close the game: after Jeter got a lead off single, Granderson and Rodriguez were struck out, and so with the Yankees down to their last out Teixeira hit a single that moved Jeter to 3rd and Cano hit a big 3-run HR that gave the Yankees a 7-5 lead. Rivera pitched a perfect 9th to end the game. "We never gave up, and that's why we won" said Girardi "CC had a tough today, but it can happen against a team like them: they can hit you and if you don't have your best stuff it's tough to face them." Pettitte is 10-9 with a 3.66 ERA against the Tigers. Max Scherzer (2-3, 4.15 ERA) Scherzer went 7 innings, gave up 7 hits, 2 runs and struck out 11 to earn win no.2 of the 2011 season. The Yankees started off strong as A-Rod homered in the 1st inning, and Scherzer went just 3.2 innings, giving up 2 hits and 1 run. But after Scherzer, Schlereth came in, and he was totally outstanding. Pettitte kept a shutout until the 7th, when the Tigers offense erupted: Ordonez got a 2 RBI double, Martinez hit a sac fly, Raburn got another 2 RBI double and Santiago added one more run with a bases loaded walk. Pettitte went 6.1 innings, gave up 9 hits, 3 runs and he got the loss. In the 8th Ordonez added insult to injury with a solo homer. In the 9th the Yanks scored 1 run thanks to a sac fly by Cano. "He was good until the 7th, but then maybe he got a little tired, and he gave up all those runs." said Girardi "it wasn't a bad start, it's just that we didn't score enough runs and our bullpen didn't back him up." After a 7 inning shutout by Feldman, the Yankees managed to comeback, but Logan and Robertson couldn't get a single out as the Rangers came back to win it. The Rangers scored in the 2nd thanks to a RBI double by Andrus. Feldman pitched a 7-inning shutout, giving up just 4 hits, and striking out 8. The Yanks managed to take the lead in the 8th, after Posada reached on a error and Martin advanced him to 3rd thanks to a single, Gardner laid down a safety squeeze that scored Nunez (pinch-ran for Posada). Granderson then drove in a RBI single that made it 2-1. Burnett left the game with a chance to win it, as he went 7, gave up 8 hits, 1 run and struck out 8. But neither Loogan and Robertson could get an out, as Young tied the game with a RBI single. Soriano then came in to pitch with bases loaded, but he couldn't keep the tie as Andrus hit a sac fly. in the 9th, Feliz struck out A-Rod, he then allowed a base hit to Teixeira and a walk to Cano, but then retired Swisher and Nunez to end the game. "AJ pitched amazingly well, but our bullpen performance was just unaccettable, our relievers need to pitch better, we had to win this game" said Girardi. In the 7th A-Rod struck again: a line drive 2-run home run that barely cleared the left field fence. In the 8th inning, Derek Jeter hit a 2 RBI single; he's now 34 hits shy from 3,000. Nova went 7 innings, gave up 6 hits and struck out 8 as he won no.3 of the season. The Rangers still avoided the shutout thanks to a RBI single by Nelson Cruz. "He's on a roll: he sorted out the problems he had earlier this season and he's pitching really well now. The Rangers made it clear that they weren't going to drop game 3 of the series: Hamilton hit a RBI double and Moreland made it 3-0 with a 2-run homerun. Swisher hit a RBI double in the second to put the Yankees on the board. But the Rangers scored again thanks to a RBI triple by Hamilton and a RBI single by Cruz. A-rod then hit a solo shot in the 4th. In the 5th Texas lead got even bigger: Moreland hit a RBI single, followed by a sac fly by Napoli and a RBI single by Davis. In the 6th Beltre hit HR no.6 of the season to make it 9-4. "it's a tough game, because Freddy didn't pitch well, and our defense didn't help him" said Girardi "he's been struggling in the last few starts, he needs to find a way to pitch like he did in April again." But somehow, he managed to limit the damage, allowing the Yankees to win the opener against the Royals. The Yanks took a 3-0 lead thanks to a 2 RBI single by Martin and a RBI single by Gardner. The Royals wasted no time and score 2 runs thanks to a 2 RBI single by Francoeur, but Granderson homered in the bottom of the inning to make it 4-2. A RBI double by Swisher made it 5-2 for the Yankees. Sabathia was removed after loading the bases in the 6th, he went 5 innings, gave up 13 hits and 2 runs. With the bases loaded Robertson came in, struck out Escobar and Butler and retired to Francoeur to get out of the inning. With the Yankees leading 6-2, the Royals tried to come back as they scored 2 thanks to a 2 RBI single by Francouer, but in the 9th Rivera pitched a 1-2-3 inning to end the game.
