He has never started against the Yankees Andy Pettitte (3-1, 2.95 ERA) Pettitte got the first loss of the season against the Tigers as he went 6.1 innings, gave up 9 hits and 3 runs. The Yanks got on the board in the 5th, after a single by Jeter and a Walk allowed to Rodriguez, Teixeira hit a big 3-run HR. But the Royals wasted no time and tied the game back up with a pinch-hitting 3-run HR by Alex Gordon. The Royals bullpen couldn't keep the score tied tough, as Gardner hit a single and then stole second, A-Rod hit a big 2-out 2-run HR that gave the Yankees the lead. The Royals loaded the bases in the 8th, but scored only one run, leaving the tying run at 3rd, and Rivera tossed a scoreless 9th to earn save no.10 of the season. Teixeira hits HR no. 8 of the season It's an A-Bomb! He's 4-3 with a 2.71 ERA against the Royals. Luke Hochevar (1-4, 4.29 ERA) Hochevar got the loss against the A's as he went 7.2 inning, gave up 7 hits and 3 runs. Yanks complete sweep with walk offYanks come back from 6-1 deficit; Swisher walks offboxscore Game recap After the 2nd inning, the Yankees chances to sweep the Royals looked pretty slim, but thanks to some clutch hitting and some great pitching, the Yanks came back and won the game in the 10th. The Yanks started early, thanks to a lead off HR by Derek Jeter. But in the 2nd, after an error by Jeter Burnett just couldn't get anyone out. Escobar, Getz and Cabrera got RBI singles, and Butler cleared the bases with a big 3 RBI double. Burnett went 2.1 innings, gave up 8 hits, 6 unearned runs and got the no decision. Swisher got a RBI double in the 4th to make it 6-2. In the 5th the Yankees made it 6-5 thanks to a 2 RBI double by A-Rod and a RBI double by Cano. Hochevar went 4.1 innings, gave up 5 hits, 4 runs and got the no decision. On the other side, Silva was outstanding, going 7 innings, allowing only 1 hit and striking out 13. The Yanks tied the game with a RBI single by Posada. In the 10th, the Royals loaded the bases, but it was Mariano Rivera that came in to shut the door. And in the bottom of the frame, Nick Swisher, swung at the first pitch he saw and gave the Yanks the win with big HR. "Silva kept us close, he was outstanding." said Girardi "but it was a strange game: i think that if Derek [Jeter] didn't make that error, Burnett would have gone 6-7 strong innings. Ivan Nova (3-2, 6.42 ERA) Nova pitched 7 shutout innings as he got win no.3 of the season in his last start. Crawford led off with a single, and then stole 2nd and 3rd. He scored thanks to a sac fly by Adrian Gonzalez Ortiz then homered to make the score 2-0. The Yanks wasted no time getting on the board as Granderson hit HR no.8 of the season. Pedroia drove in 2 more runs in the 5th with a triple. Nova got the loss and went 4.2 innings, gave up 7 hits and 4 runs while still managing to strike out 8. On the other side Beckett was lights out as he gave up 5 hits and 1 run in 5.1 innings. In the 8th the Yanks scored 2 runs thanks to a Home-run by Robinson Cano. In the 9th, Garder got to 3rd with nobody out after an errant throw by Youkillis. But Jeter struck out, Granderson lined out and A-Rod flew out as the Yanks left the tying run at 3rd. "it's tough, because we had a shot at tying the game in the 9th and we just couldn't drive the run." said Girardi. He got the win. He's 3-3 with a 5.52 ERA in his career against the Yankees Freddy Garcia (0-3, 4.91 ERA) Garcia is still seeking the first win of the season. In his last start he got the loss as he went just 4.2 innings, gave up 9 hits, 8 run (5 earned). However, he pitched amazingly well and kept the Yankees close. The Red Sox scored in the 2nd thanks to a solo HR by David Ortiz. Garcia would go 5.1 innings, give up 9 hits, 1 run and strike out 8. Matsusaka, on the other side, carried a no hitter into the 5th inning, until Posada broke it with a base hit. In the 6th the Yanks tied the game: Jeter and Granderson got back-to-back walks and Cano hit a RBI single. In the 7th, Swisher delivered the big blow with a solo HR. Matsusaka was then removed from the game: he went 6 innings, gave up 3 hits, 2 runs, 5 walks and struck out 5. In the 9th, with Rivera on the mound, Youkills and Saltalamacchia got back-to-back singles, and they were moved over to 2nd and 3rd with a sac bunt. But Ellsbury and Crawford both grounded out as the Red Sox failed to come back. The Yanks scored in the 4th thanks to a RBI single by Jorge Posada. In the 5th inning, Texeira hit a 2-run HR, improving the Yanks lead to 3-0. Lester got the loss, as he went 5 innings, gave up 5 hits, 3 runs and struck out 9. In the 6th, Jenks came in to pitch, but he struggled as he gave up a walk and a hit, and then a big 3-run HR to Jorge Posada. Sabathia was outstanding until the end, as he went 8.1 innings, gave up 5 hits, no runs and stuck out 6. "It was his best start of the year, he pitched well until the end, even when his pitch count was around 90 he was locating his pitches and getting strikes." said Girardi. The Rays scored early thanks to back-to-back singles by Rodriguez and Longoria and a 3-run HR by Kelly Shoppach. Shields had a shutout until the 6th inning that was broken by a solo homer by Robinson Cano. He went 5.2 innings, gave up 5 hits, 1 run and struck out 10 to earn win no.1 of the season. The Rays scored again as Sam Fuld hit HR no.2 of the season in the bottom of the 6th. Teixeira drove in a RBI with a single to make it 4-2, but Peralta pitched a perfect 9th to end the game. Zach Britton (2-2, 4.43 ERA) Zach Britton got the no-decision as he went 7.1 innings and gave up 7 hits and 2 runs against the Rays. The O's scored early thanks to a 3 RBI triple by Reynolds and a RBI double by Guerrero. Britton carried a shutout until the 6th, when he left the game with runners at 2nd and 3rd. He went 5.1 innings, gave up 4 hits, 2 runs, 2 walks and struck out 9. A-Rod broke the shutout with a sac fly and Cano added a run with a RBI single. In the 6th the O's scored one thanks to Fox solo shot and in the 7th Markakis drove in one more with a RBI double. A-Rod homered in the 9th, but the Yanks still lost 6-3 to the O's. "It was a tough game." said Girardi "because if Garcia doesn't give those 4 runs in the first, you may get the lead and keep it, but with that 4 run lead, Britton pitched with great confidence and managed to keep the lead."
