25 Man All Time Team

that would be the challenge to all of this. if you change the rules, it's no longer the same game.

Let him make his own list then Homer. The way you set it up is just fine. I've been so busy since you started this thread that I never posted mine yet. I'll try to do it this week but I'll be sure not to make two different lists.

Gonna go 5 starters, 6 relievers, no DH, 8 position players, 6 bench

SP - funny thing is, you could totally exclude about 60 years of baseball history and make a perfect staff from pre-1920 and post-1980 pitchers.

Matthewson, Young, Johnson, Nichols, Alexander........Maddux, Johnson, Martinez, Clemens, take 5 from those, and you're never wrong. However, I think the staff should represent all eras.

RP - obviously we're talking about the 3-inning save guys vs. the 1-inning save guys. Again, a mix is best. Rivera and Eckersley are the obvious guys, but there are other things I'd want - lefties, non-flame-throwers, etc.

My staff:

W.Johnson - what he did for the IP...insane

L. Grove - just great, nothing to criticize

T.Seaver - best of his era, over Palmer

S.Koufax - preposterous peaks

R.Clemens - of the recent guys, combination of wins, Ks, ERA, longevity wins out

M.Rivera - the best

D.Eckersley - video game stats

B.Wagner - untouchable lefty

H.Wilhelm - different era, knuckleball amid the smoke

R.Fingers - started and closed, great guy to have (a la Smoltz)

R.Gossage - multi-inning finisher

C - defense first? Piazza had the most pop, but a defensive position first, like SS

J.Bench - offense + defense = best

1B - surprisingly shallow, in terms of all-time greats

L.Gehrig - obvious

2B - 3-headed monster at the top, can't go wrong with any

E.Collins - great all-around

3B - power vs avg, think it comes down to Schmidt vs Brett

M.Schmidt - take his power

SS - defense-first position, only one choice

H.Wagner

LF - plenty of talent here

T.Williams

CF - like 2B, 3-headed monster, just depends on what you value

W.Mays

RF - deep position, but obvious choice

B.Ruth

Bench - real bench, backup catcher, corner IF, middle IF, 2 OF....mix of R/L, defensive specialists, speed guy, etc.

C - Y.Berra...3 MVPs, great all-around, plus play LF

1B - J.Foxx...righty pure power

SS - O.Smith...best defensive SS ever, could also run

OF - B.Bonds...patient, could run early, could rake late, lefty hitter

OF - T.Cobb...will take his wheels over Mantle's pop

Starting lineup:

1.Collins

2.Wagner

3.Ruth

4.Gehrig

5.Williams

6.Mays

7.Schmidt

8.Bench
