Los Angeles Angels missing + more

The team name is incorrect, it should be Los Angeles Angels. Also, it should be Rogers Centre rather than Skydome in Toronto. Does anyone know how to fix this??

By the way, Nomo should be on the Devil Rays.

Thankfully EA is still showing respect toward the 3.5 million residents of Orange County and not subjecting their game to the whims of a madman.

It shouldn't be Los Angeles, they don't play anywhere near Los Angeles, and haven't for nearly 40 years. Just because the owner is an idiot doesn't mean the rest of the world has to be.

The Washington Senators were "officially" the Washington Nationals from 1905-1955, but the fans never recognized them as such.

I applaud EA for not buying into this crap, and keeping the name the same in the game. At least I won't have to get upset at this game every time I want to play it.

Hopefully ESPN and the rest of the sports media will also boycott this name, and refer to them by their proper name (Since Disney owns ESPN, and is siding with Anaheim on this matter, it's hopeful).

And of course once Anaheim wins the court case, we can all hope this move (by far the most moronic, stupid, and insipid decision made by ANY major league team since Ruth was sold), will be a distant, but sick memory.

Yeah something might be missing, but at least EA went with the dodgers uniforms..no letters, I didn't even think they'd take them off, at least they did pay attention to the news

You probably heard the tail end of the name, which is **Angels Of Anaheim ( I won't add the front of the name)

The Of Anaheim included is the owner's attempt to get around the contractual obligation to include Anaheim in the team name. Of course this breaks the spirit of the contract because the Of Anaheim part will be ignored.

That is why it is so great that EA didn't buy into this crap and change the name in the game. Ignore the front end of the name, make this experiment a failure.

Gosh calm down. Los Angeles does not apply to the city, it implies the LA Metropolitan area. Major League Baseball granted rights to the entire LA area to Angels and Dodgers equally, so Arte can name them what he wants. After all, he is the owner! I can understand your frustration as I live on the border of both LA and Anaheim so the name change doesnt affect me...but seriously, since Anaheim has already lost 2 of 2 court cases against Arte's Angels - I dont see it becoming Anaheim again anytime soon..and if it does I have no problem with it..but I want the game up to date as of today..and today its Los Angeles Angels. Type in www.laangels.com and it will direct you straight to the Angels team website. By the way, the Angels were first known as the Los Angeles Angels in the 60s and have only been known as Anaheim for a couple years now.

Maybe it's cuz I was a child of the early 80's, but calling the team Los Angeles OR Anaheim just feels wrong.

They're the California Angels. They were for nearly three decades.

Enough with this "name them Los Angeles for marketing purposes" crap. And, let's keep in mind that Anaheim was only attached to the name as a technicality in the recent stadium lease.

And they were only known as that for 4 years.

Anaheim was their name for the last 8 years, twice as long as that name. Don't give me the "they were also a minor league team for over 50 years with that name" excuse either. If you want to use that, why don't they also take that LA logo from the Dodgers, since that logo was was worn by the minor league Angels.

Anaheim was also the name they wore when they won their first and only World Championship.

Don't try and school me on the history of the team, trust me on this, when it comes to the Angels I would deserve a PhD.

And no, I won't be calming down. Orange County is part of the LA/OC metropolitan area. It is in no way, shape, or form a part of Los Angeles. Don't give me the crappy excuses that Moreno is trying to use to rip the identity of 3.5 million people away from them.

He's lying to the public about this whole increased revenue theory, because HE CAN'T GET MORE MONEY regardless of the neme because he threw away the only station that can broadcast enough games to give them any kind of real money. He let the Dodgers come in and swipe it away next year, while he'll be scrambling for leftovers. KCAL 9 was the only independant station left, now Moreno will be stuck with Channels 13 or 5 which the Dodgers have left because of their inability to broadcast enough games.

Next, they've lost a grand total of ZERO court cases. What they have lost are temporary injuctions and restraining orders against the name change. No cases have been presented as of yet, it just means that they don't have a clear cut runaway victory. But don't take losing something like that as having any bearing on the final outcome of the real case.

And again, it's not **Angels, it's **Angels OF ANAHEIM. If you're going to refer to that name, refer to the whole thing.

You may not care what the name is, but many people do, and many understand just how big of an insult this is. Orange County deserves it's identity, and EA has hopefully seen this case is not over, and left things in tact because of that.

Finally, he's the owner, so he can do anything he wants? Fine, but he doesn't own the stadium. If he wants to keep this name, then he should leave Anaheim so we can get a team down here that wants to be ANAHEIM'S team.

I'm the fan, and guess what, I can do whatever the hell I want as well. He either changes the name back to Anaheim, or he takes his team and gets out (which he's going to do anyway).

Oh, and just for reference, www.anaheimangels.com, angelsbaseball.com, and angels.mlb.com all link to the Angel home page.

www.californiaangels.com links to an adult site of some sorts.

It just bugs me that a perfectly fine name that had a good deal of tradition built into it -- California Angels -- has now been changed twice in the last decade, and for crass business motives each time.

Isn't it enough that we have to deal with re-named ballparks every X number of years?

While I didn't agree with the change to Anaheim at the time, it was not done as a crass business decision.

The people of Anaheim had been wanting it for years. In '95, fans began handing out Anaheim Angels Now! pins at the stadium to try and convince the Autry's to change the name (this was before Disney bought the team).

It was a show of respect for the city that had been the home of the Angels for nearly 30 (and now 40) years. It was also done to show that Anaheim had grown into a large enough city to have this kind of identity. When the Angels had to mnve in the 60's (after Los Angeles had basically ignored the team while bending over backwards to please the Dodgers), Autry was going to move to Long Beach, but they wanted the team to be called the Long Beach Angels. Anaheim didn't make that a requirement.

They built a stadium, and welcomed Autry in (as the California Angels), and did a great job. Disney(in one of their few good moves with the team), gave the gift of the city name to the team. Yes, they felt it would help them market, but that wasn't the driving force, it was Anaheim that wanted it, and quite frankly earned it.

This name change, however, is nothing but a money grab. Moreno's said it himself, that this name change is all about money. What a joke. But the biggest joke of all is that he won't get this money.

Look at the Rams, they came to Anaheim, and never established an identity down here because they decided to keep their L.A. name. Nobody in Orange County cared, and when they did bad, nobody showed up. Why should they, the team didn't represent them. That's why the Rams left, because nobody down here really cared about an LA team. And nobody in LA really cared, because they had the Raiders, who actually played there.

And now here we go again. Moreno doesn't understand that what a team needs is an identity. 2002 finally gave the Angels that identity, and now 2 years later, it's all been wiped away. They were Orange County's team, Anaheim's team, and Southern California's team. Now they're nothing but LA's second team. The Clippers of baseball.

I wouldn't have a problem with the California name coming back, but they didn't win it all under that name. California may have the advantage of time, but Anaheim has the legacy of a championship. It's a shame we couldn't beat Boston last year. If we had won it all, there would have been no way he could have changed the name.

But no matter what he does, he can't take 2002 away from Anaheim. Even if he moves the team, he won't be able to take away that magical moment.

Hey HaloFan,

I really miss your Day mod of Angel Stadium MVP 2004 when I started a game on the new MVP. Your mod was really a beauty. Are you going to do it for 2k5? Dont forget the night version this year:)

Back to the topic. I have been an Angel fan since they came to Anaheim when I was 5. Being born and raised in Santa Ana and then living my teen years in Anaheim Hills including season tickets in the 70s, I really didnt like the recent name change. Mainly for the reason is it just sounds stupid and long!

I didnt initially like the name change to Anaheim Angels either as it was just too different from what I had gotten used to for so many years. And of course, the subsequent uniform changes were tough to take at first too. But eventually, you get used to them.

I was thinking of an alternative to just a city name. Maybe the O.C. Angels, since the O.C. has gotten to be popular and recognized on a national scale. Or maybe the So Cal Angels. Maybe those changes would give Arte the broader revenue media source he wants while distinguishing the team from the Dodgers and keeping the immediate local fans happy.

It was this decision that stopped me in my tracks last year when I was doing the night version. When these rumors started, it hit me pretty hard, and I just couldn't get back into modding after that.

If I do anything this year, it won't be based in reality. I'm thinking about doing a protest mod, where I will update the stadium to look like it does in real life, and it will have all the beauty that the day version did last year. But it won't have the LA Times ad, I'll change that to The Orange County Register or Welcome To Anaheim, or Screw You Moreno, something like that. Anaheim references will be in there big time. It will look realistic, and ads and stuff will be real companies, but it won't be 100% accurate.

That's about the only way I could find the motivation to do it. I doubt I'll be playing as the Angels this year. Of course, I might try and mod whatever team's stadium I end up playing in, if nobody else beats me to it. (I'm leaning toward the Padres at this point).

I'll see what happens when I get the game.

Hey HaloFan,

Well, dont sweat what you dont have any control over when it comes to the Angels. It's just a name or uniform color, you know:) It may seem funky at first but then you forget about it.

Hey, I can relate to what you said about KCAL. I am out in Palm Desert and we get KCAL on Time Warner Cable but not my Direct TV, so I carry the basic TW cable for the local channels. The problem is we dont get the local LA channels 5 and 13, and KOCE, so when the Angels or Dodgers play on those channels, I am out of luck. Even with having the MLB Extra Innings package on Direct TV, I was blacked out from my local teams because officially I am in the local TV range of the LA region for Direct TV, even though I am 2 hours away. I need to call in and complain to the Angels because they are alienating their fan base on the outer reaches of their local broadcasting region. The only way I can get the local Angel broadcasts is when they are on Ch. 9, Fox Sports West 1 and 2, and K-PAX.

Pretty sorry when you have every available viewing option in your viewing area and still cant get your local teams when they broadcast.

I sure hope you get your mojo on again for doing Angel Stadium. Your Day mod was outstanding last year. 2k5's default is very plain, much like last year I suppose.

Halofan-

I had no intention to insult you, and im not in favor (nor opposed) to the Angels name change. I just said that since its official (according to Major League Baseball) that it would be nice to see the game updates to LAAoA. As another poster said, if I had to pick a name between Los Angeles, OC, Anaheim, or California Angels - id prefer OC Angels. That would be pretty cool. Although some people have heard of Anaheim because of Disneyland, most people are more familiar with LA outside of Southern California and I think thats what Arte was referring to when he said the team needs an identity. He isn't doing all this to hurt the Angels, after all, he's putting his money where his mouth is. I'll continue to support the Angels whether they are LA or Anaheim or OC.

I still miss the California Angels name, but I see your point HaloFan. I didn't know that there was an underground Anaheim movement; I guess I always thought that was the city's own publicity grab.

Still, save for this recent incident from Arte (I wonder if they deigned to run a cost-benefit analysis on alienation of the fan base vs. more media money??), he does seem to be one of the better owners in the game for the fans right now. He's like the anti-Carl Pohlad of MLB.

That's Arte's marketing plan. Make people think you care about the fans, while actually screwing them in the long run.

For example: Arte makes headlines when he first buys the team by lowering beer prices, which he actually did. However, just about every other concession in the stadium has gone up in price since he took over the team. Nobody talks about that. Beer is cheaper, but hot dogs, soda, and all that other stuff has increased in price. He gets credit as being fan friendly, while actually screwiong them over.

He says, "I need to make this change so I don't have to raise ticket prices." Yet, for 2005, not only did he cut payroll by a significant amount, letting three of the most popular players in team history go, he also *ding ding ding* increased ticket prices!

Now, don't get me wrong, I don't have a problem when things like that are raised, as the market allows it. If he prices things too high, then people would stop coming. What I don't like about it is that he uses these excuses as leverage to change the team name. But the name change didn't stop him from doing the very same thing he said the change would prevent.

So what's going to happen when the name change fails? What will happen when he doesn't get the money he expects? He'll raises ticket prices, cut payroll, or sell the team.

None of what he does is "for the fans," he does this for his bottom line. And by changing the team name, he also shows that he has no loyalty to this community. Which means he'll more than likely move the team when he gets a chance to, if he hasn't sold it off for a profit by then.

Some people might give him the benefit of the doubt here, but not me. I've seen how he works.

I've been an Angel fan since 1969..I did not grow up in Orange County but in Los Angeles County..to me they will always be the California Angels..The California Angels !..I'm backing Moreno on this name issue...maybe he will move the team to where people are..I'm really surprised at the attitude of the people of Orange County..as a kid I suffred through many losing seasons rooting for the Angels, actually believeing that they would win something someday, even if they didn't I would still love them..kids can be cruel though, mighty cruel...I don't know about the mentality of Anahiem...whenever the Angels (while in Anaheim) took a step forward, they took two backwards..I can remember back in 1970..the Halos had a leftfielder named Alex Johnson..the rest of the league saw this guy as a great hitter, the Angels saw him as a troublemaker..accusing him of not hustleing enough and not having a bright, smiley personality, all he did for them was win the 1970 AL batting title amid all of the suspensions and clubhouse distractions..the next season he was messed with so much he missed half the year due to suspensions. They traded him to Cleveland by the end of the 1971 season....Frank Robinson could've been the MLB's first Black manager in 1975,word is,he wanted to run the Angel Ballclub(the California Angels) ..the Angels said no and let him go to Cleveland to do it. at that same time around 1974 they had Whitey Herzog on the coaching staff..he was actually interim manager around that time for four games(2-2)..The Angels let him go to Kansas City..the Royals went on to take over the AL West ..then Whitey went on to success in St Louis in the 1980's...Jim Fregosi, an in -house star, managed the team to their first division title in 1979..and they lost patience with him a few years later...these people drop kicked Rod Carew(a man that hit .280 at the age of 39 in 1985) in 1986 due changes in the roster limit in order to keep the likes of Mark Ryal and Gustavo Polidor...this was in the glow of the Wallyworld year..good for Joyner, but a classless way to see a superstar end his career....Carew may have been what the Halos needed to beat Boston in the '86 playoffs,it would'nt have hurt to have him...Talk about 1986..Gene Mauch was a good manager, got you there but can't get you over.... he was the manager of the 1964 Phillies who lost a 6.5 game lead over the National League in the last two weeks of the season, by losing ten straight games .This was the guy they replaced Fregosi with in 1981 early in the season..Mauch laid low in Montreal from 1969-1975 ,no one expected the expansion Expos to win any time soon. In the 1982 best of 5 playoffs versus Milwaukee the Angels squandered a 2 game lead ..losing three in a row......Mauch was back in the post-season again in 1986.with a 3 games to 1 lead over Boston..one out away from the world series and a 5-4 lead pulls Mike Witt and replaces him with Gary Lucas, who proceeds to hit the first batter he sees.. Mauch pulls him and places the ball in Donnie Moores' hands..poor Donnie Moore ! Moore gives up a homer to Dave Henderson and the rest is history..Angels lose in extra frames....should'nt have been a problem with two games to go right ?,they could just win one,no problem, Wrong!!!!!!! they looked helpless in Boston.....and faded out as was Mauch's pattern....OC pardoned him, but seemed to blame Donnie Moore..Mr Moore committed suicide and tried to take his wife with him.......I say all of this to say that it seems that the OC attitude is one of implsion..in Moreno we have a guy that want's to win and the OC say's no...they want to impede the man's progressive thinking...most teams that win are in areas that are full of passionate people ...(would Yankee,Phillie or Tiger fans tolorate Dave Chalk,Winston Llenas and Andy Hassler ?and would the A's let Herzog go twice ?) ..positive energy channeled in the right directions..positive energy, not negative energy..what the Angels have again is the opposite of the ?"Miracle Mets","Yes We Can" and " You Gotta Belive"..back in 1972 when those cruel kids used to tease me about how Sandy Alomar and Leo Cardenas together could'nt hit Sandy Alomar's weight..they used to say " The Angels Will Always find a way to Lose"..They Had A one year window in 2002 ,and got it done thanks to a great job by Mike Scioscia and the players. The California Angels will be back, so will the Washington Senators..it wont be long.

AMiTdoc2b, if you want LA to be one big metropolitan area, then why doesn't LA just make it's own damned state? The rest of California hates LA anyway. Just leave and die on your own, then see who really gives a rat about LA.
