My Preliminary Impressions

Well, here goes another time around with MVP 2005. I've heard the hype, and I had to finally dig in myself to see what's up. Here's my first impressions.

First of all, it's nice to see some videos back in EA Sports games, but man, I'm not a Manny Ramirez fan at all.

Menu Navigation is back with a vengeance! All of us PCers will enjoy being able to move around the menus better. Looks like less mouse clicks to get stupid little tasks done as well, FINALLY.

I went right past all of the silly little goodies and dove straight in to a game with the Cardinals @ my SF Giants!

Of course, John Dowd still lurks, but at least this year he's actually left handed! I wonder how the Giants management convinced a superstar like him to switch sides of the plate... So much for any sort of Bonds/Dowd continuum.

The game presentation is identical to last year's, with the same overlays and the same cheesey intro videos. Kruke and Kuip, the best announcers in baseball (am I biased? I think not!), are back and don't seem to be as on top of things as I originally hoped. The commentating isn't as bad as other people claim, but it's missing a lot if you're looking for authenticity. In fact, it's nothing like watching a game that Kruke and Kuip ACTUALLY announce.

The graphics have a much sleaker look this year. And, in fact, they look much more realistic. The crowd is made up of a bunch of 2D photos taken of actual people, but they end up looking like cardboard cut-outs in the end. At least they got better.

The gameplay is absolutely stronger, with player motions seemless, and ball physics dead on, actually baseball ocurs here. I totally love the addition of foul tips and variable strike zones. Not every call is black and white anymore!

I'm just going to say that this game is looking good, and if I could figure out how to MOD John Dowd and get the actual Bonds face, I'd be set. Hope you all enjoy it!

As for next year...........

Too bad this is the final season for MVP as we know it. We're going to be loseing a great product. Damn the MLBPA.
