2007 Scouting Report on Cubs minor leaguer Tyler Colvin from Scout.com.

Tyler Colvin

Pos: OF. HT: 6-3. WT: 190. Age: 21.

2006 Totals: .268 AVG., 64 G, 11 HR, 12 2B, 53 RBI, 55 K, 17 BB, .313 OBP.

Acquired: First round of 2006 draft (Clemson University).

The Cubs are so ecstatic about their most recent first-round draft pick that they invited him to big league Spring Training in his first year with the team.

OK, so that’s only part true (Colvin was awarded the invite to big league camp as part of his contract with the organization). Still, Cubs coaches and instructors are nothing if not carried away by what they’ve seen from the 21-year-old outfielder thus far.

Colvin placed second in the Northwest League in RBIs (53) and third in extra-base hits (29) a season ago, all the while missing the first week of the season after signing just before the June 21 Hawks season opener.

Colvin also led the league in post-season batting average with a .412 (7-for-17) clip in four games, and the Cubs feel he’s developing quite nicely.

“He’s shown everything you want to see out of him: power to all fields, runs the bases well, plays the outfield – left and center – and his throws are good,†Colvin’s manager at Boise, Steve McFarland, said last season.

Part of what makes Colvin so interesting is the fact that he was considered the first surprise pick (13th overall) of last year’s draft. Yet Baseball America named Colvin the top prospect of the Northwest League for 2006.

While the Cubs pay little to no attention to rankings (and rightfully so), they believe they’re dealing with someone who already was one of the most advanced, mature players at his level a season ago.

“He knows how to run the bases, can throw and field, and knows the strike zone,†Fleita said of Colvin. “He’s got a lot going for him.â€

Hey Totte,

Robert Andino (SS in the Marlin's farm system) is working on playing 2B this offseason to better his chances of making the club, so it looks like his second position should change from 3B to IF.

Matt Treanor (Marlin's backup C) is on the team because of his defense, but his rating ingame are pretty low. He threw out 41.9% of runner last year and made only 3 errors in 403 chances. For comparision, Yadier Molina lead the NL with a 43.9% mark at throwing runners out and has strength ratings of 95, and accuracy of 90. I don't think Treanor should be that high, as he had less attempts, but maybe strength around 80-85 and accuracy around 75-80. Fielding bumped up to maybe around 70-75, keep range at 65 or maybe bump up to 70.

I also don't know if you boosted up Stephen Drew's ratings or not (SS in Arizona system). He got called up in July but was still in the minors in your roster, and had a very impressive time up (.316 BAA, .874 OPS). The main reason I bring it up is because Delmon Young had similiar stats (.317 BAA, .812 OPS, with 100 less ABs) and got a boost in his ratings, but it doesn't look like Drew did (I don't still have the old UR so I can't double check, and it's been a few months since I've played, but I remember drew have mid-50 ratings back then). I don't know if you just accidently overlooked him because he was in the minors in your roster, or if they were edited and you just felt that his ratings should be lower. If the later is the case, sorry for bringing it up, but just thought I should incase it was the former.

Also, I looked over the thread and didn't really see anything on the Rule V draft. There were a few posts concerning a few picks, but nothing about the whole that that I was able to find. Figure better to re-post it if I missed it, then to not have it posted at all. Here's a link that shows the picks and where some of them were traded and such.

While the deal was agreed to earlier this month, the Yankees and Miguel Cairo have officially come to terms on a one-year deal worth $750K and has been added to the roster.

To make room on the roster, Matt DeSalvo (P) was desiginated for assignment.

Another deal that was agreed to awhile back that was made official today:

Phillies sign Karim Garcia to a minor league deal with invite to ST. Garcia played in Japan last season. No details available.

One step ahead of you here Mr, already did that move.

Yankees designated RHP Matt DeSalvo for assignment.

Yankees re-signed second baseman Miguel Cairo to a one-year, $750,000 contract.

Just three weeks after the deal was intially agreed to. Cairo will remain the Yankees' primary backup infielder

Cubs released LHP Glendon Rusch.

The Blue Jays will have Scott Downs prepare as a starting pitcher this spring.

Mets designated RHP Jason Standridge for assignment.

Yeah the plan is for him to also get a shot at making the rotation.. basically there's like 7 guys vying for the last 2 spots. It's more likely though that Downs is in the bullpen

Jeff Weaver will take a one-year deal from the Mariners worth $8.325 million, the same amount he earned in his contract with the Angels last year.

SEA signs Jeff Weaver to a one-year deal worth $8.325 mil. He can earn up to $1.4 mil more in incentives.

Nice! How will the SEA rotation shape up after this? Washburn, Hernandez, Ramirez, Weaver, Batista?

how close are you looking at totte, how many errors are left?

At the moment, 36 errors and 39 warnings but now it's more a question about exporting players than creating new.

Might not be time for a plus tomorrow but a standard is shaping up real nicely :)

Yeah, I'd say that's a fair guess. Weaver going back to the AL could get ugly though...he should have taken the two-year, $12 mil deal (plus incentives) St. Louis offered.

Boston and Colorado are again talking about a trade for Todd Helton. The assumption is that the Sox would be sending either Matt Clement or Mike Lowell to Colorado.

Also, in looking at the Diamondbacks minor league rosters, I noticed a few problems. On their single A team, Lino Garcia and Juan Camilo are no longer there. They are playing in Mexico. This offseason they have signed C Mark Johnson from the Brewers AAA and CF Rich Thompson from the Pirates AAA. I haven't seen those posted yet.

Why Prior as the 5th starter? I know Zambrano's been called to start the first game but shouldn't Prior be 2nd?
