MIL:

Brewers agreed to terms with RHP Claudio Vargas on a one-year contract.

Vargas asked for $2.85 million and was offered $2.15 million in his second year of arbitration. He'll be the Brewers' fifth starter after coming over in the Doug Davis trade.

STL:

Cardinals re-signed outfielder Preston Wilson to a one-year, $1 million contract.

He can make an extra $500,000 in incentives. Wilson still has some value as a fourth outfielder, but the Cardinals might have been better off without him. The 32-year-old hit .243/.300/.486 in 111 at-bats after joining St. Louis last year. He then hit .200 with two RBI in 35 at-bats in he playoffs. The smart strategy would be to use him only against lefties in a platoon with Chris Duncan. However, he'll probably also get some at-bats against righties, especially when Jim Edmonds is hurt. So Taguchi seems unlikely to have value in NL-only leagues with Wilson back.

BAL:

Orioles agreed to terms with OF Nick Markakis, OF Adam Stern, LHP Kurt Birkins and LHP Ryan Keefer on one-year contracts.

Markakis will be the Orioles' everyday right fielder and will probably bat third after his fine rookie season, but he's the only lock here to make the team. Stern has turned into a long shot to secure a bench spot with all of Orioles' additions this winter. Birkins will be in the mix for a job as the second lefty in the pen.

The Orioles revealed that left-hander Ryan Keefer underwent Tommy John surgery on Dec. 1

Then what's he still doing on the 40-man roster? Keefer, 25, battled a sore elbow from the start of camp last year and had a 2.49 ERA in the 25 1/3 innings that he was able to pitch in the minors. He was a decent relief prospect, but he shouldn't still be occupying a roster spot if he's going to miss all of 2007.

Orioles designated RHP Marino Salas for assignment.

Salas has consistently put up strong numbers in the minors, but the Orioles didn't think he'd make the jump and survive in a major league bullpen. Still, he was a far better use of a 40-man roster spot than Rule 5 pick Adam Donachie, who shouldn't have any chance at all of making the team. The soon-to-be 26-year-old Salas had a 2.92 ERA and a 46/16 K/BB ratio in 49 1/3 IP for Double-A Bowie last season.

Orioles claimed RHP Jeremy Guthrie off waivers from the Indians.

Not a bad move. Guthrie still has some upside, probably as a reliever rather than as a starter. We doubt he'll reach it, but at the price of a waiver claim, it won't hurt to take a look at him. The 27-year-old had a 6.98 ERA in nine appearances with the Indians last season. He's out of options, so he'll be placed on waivers again if he fails to make the Orioles.

Rockies owner Charlie Monfort said the Todd Helton trade talks with the Red Sox are now dead.

The Rangers will announce the signing of Sammy Sosa at a news conference on Tuesday afternoon.

Barry Bonds arrived in San Francisco to take his physical Monday, one of the final steps in completing his deal with the Giants.

Todd Coffey hopes to reintegrate his splitter this year after rarely using it the last two seasons.

With Scott Podsednik going down, Josh Fields is now a possibility to open the season as a part-time left fielder, manager Ozzie Guillen said.

Nick Masset, who was picked up from the Rangers in last month's Brandon McCarthy deal, is likely to make the White Sox as a middle reliever.

Nate Bland should be in Iowa. He was signed in mid November.

Minorleaguebaseball.com might not be up to date then. Thats where I got those from plus the other FA guys that were listed as on teams.

I agree, Gordon is projected to be a great hitter but unless he proves it at the MLB level, I won't boost his ratings.

Any other input you might have on the Royals system is greatly appreciated. For instance, is Danny Tamayao still a SP or is he a RP now? Stuff like that...

I'll take a deeper look at the Royals system for you. I'll let you know what I find.

According to The Associated Press, the Giants and Barry Bonds have finalized a one-year, $15.8 million contract.

The Giants have yet to schedule a conference to announce the signing, which was delayed nearly two months. Under the terms of the deal, Bonds' trainers -- Harvey Shields and Greg Oliver -- reportedly will no longer be on the Giants' payroll. That means neither will be allowed in the clubhouse, where they previously had their own lockers next to Bonds' space, or any other restricted area in any big-league ballpark.

Dodgers signed RHP Chin-Hui Tsao, who had been with the Rockies, to a one-year contract.

Finalizing a deal that was done earlier this month. The 25-year-old Tsao probably won't contribute early on, but there's still a chance that he could overcome his shoulder troubles and become an effective reliever for the Dodgers. Expect him to spend at least the first month or two working his way back at Triple-A Las Vegas. While in the majors, he's expected to receive a salary of about $400,000.

More Cubs scouting reports.

Chris Robinson

Pos: C. HT: 6’0â€. WT: 200.

2006 Totals: .294 BA, 107 G, 3 HR, 59 RBI

This past year was Robinson’s first full season since being drafted by Detroit in the third round in 2005. He came to the Cubs in the trade that sent Neifi Perez to the Tigers and was one of the Florida State League’s best hitting catchers all year.

Robinson left the Lakeland Tigers with a .286 average and didn’t disappoint the Cubs by hitting .356 in 12 games at Daytona. He likes his doubles (totaling 24 this season) and considers himself a gap-to-gap hitter.

It appears Robinson can hit, but what about defensively?

The 22-year-old was somewhat shaky with eight errors and 16 passed balls behind the plate this year. Robinson says he’s always prided himself on defense, and added that his goal is have every pitcher on the staff want to throw to him. He threw out 26 percent of opposing runners.

My brother played with and pitched to this kid at Univ. of Illinois. He was a stud there. It seemed like he threw everyone out that tried to steal on him. His defense is there - he just needs to get comfortable.

Totte:

Here's 3 top pitching prospects that I think need to be added to the Royals orginization. The first is RP Joakim Soria who was picked up in this year's Rule 5 Draft which means he'll have to be with the ML club all season, unless they send him back to the Dodgers. He actually pitched a perfect game in the Mexican Pacific League this past winter. Amazing stuff supposedly.

Joakim A. Soria (Relief Pitcher)

Bats Right, Throws Right

Height 6' 2", Weight 170 lb.

Born May 18, 1984 in Monclova, Coahuila Mexico

http://www.minorleaguesplits.com/pl/465/465657.html

Full Name: Christopher R. Nicoll (Starting Pitcher)

Born: 10/30/1983 Birthplace: Whittier, CA

College: UC Irvine

Height: 6' 2" Weight: 190

Bats: R Throws: R

Chris Nicoll: Nicoll was the Royals 3rd round selection in 2005, and has done well at every level he's faced so far. Last season for Idaho falls, he was 0-3 with a 3.62 ERA, 34 strikeouts in 27.1 IP, and a 1.28 WHIP. This year for Burlington he's doing even better. So far he's 3-5 with a 2.84 ERA, 74 strikeouts in 76 IP, and a very nice 1.00 WHIP. Nicoll, like Billy Buckner, is due for a promotion.

http://www.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/st..._pbp&pid=459980

Full Name: Matthew M. Kniginyzky Position: SP

Born: October 5, 1982 Oakville,Ontario

Height: 6-3 Weight: 185 Bats: L Throws: R

Kniginyzky's season thus far has rised him on a lot of people's top prospect list. He is having a fantastic season for Burlington. Matthew is 7-3 with a 3.13 ERA, 79 strikeouts in 92 IP, and a solid 3:1 K/BB ratio. Kniginyzky is another one of those pitchers in the Royals organization that is due to be promoted at some point.

I might not be born with baseball in my blood like you guys but how can a guy pitch a perfect game if he's a reliever (unless he started the game)?

Anyway, thanks for your input. I'll make sure to add those guys in one of the upcoming versions :)

It'll be interesting to see how Tsao bounces back from shoulder surgery considering he didn't pitch at all last year. As for Bonds...who cares anymore?

Thanks

Unless they've been resigned, I'm pretty sure Almanzar, Anderson, Yarnall, Pote, Padgett and Minges are minor league FA's. Can anyone confirm this?

I know for a fact Minges is a minor league FA unless he's signed with some other team than the Red Sox. He's not listed anywhere on the 07 rosters on Soxprospects and hasn't been involved in any transactions according to the list.

Hey Totte, the new rosters look great!

But first, a few VERY important changes for the Angels:

First is that Bartolo Colon, Dallas McPherson, and Juan Rivera are all out on injury, indefinitely. I know you can't just put them on the DL, but you might consider moving them to the minor leagues, for convenience's sake.

Second is that Chone Figgins should no longer be considered a 2B. Barring a major trade, his role this season will be starting 3B and utility.

Howie Kendrick is NOT a first baseman. He played games there last season because of the hole. His natural position is 2B, and the Angels plan to play him there for each of his starts.

The first base job will go to either Casey Kotchman or Kendry Morales, pending what happens at Spring Training. For the moment, assume it's Kotchman, meaning that Morales starts at AAA.

Mike Napoli will more than likely get the majority of starts at C this year. The FO really seems to like him, and he had the lowest catcher's ERA (3.76) out of the starting three.

Otherwise, things look really good. Keep it up!
