sfgiantsflgators
SD: Padres signed RHP Cooper Brannan to a minor league contract. Brannan, 22, served two tours in Iraq as a Marine and lost his left pinky in the second. The Padres didn't give any indication where he'd begin his pro career. This appears to be as much about good publicity as anything else. I have no idea what's going on here, so you can do what you want NYY: Yankees re-signed LHP Ron Villone to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training. Because last year's overuse resulted in his ERA skyrocketing down the stretch, Villone didn't get the multiyear deal he wanted as a free agent. Instead, he's settling from a minor league pact to stay with a contender. He can make up to $3 million under the terms of the deal, so no one should feel too sorry for him. FLA: Kevin Gregg lost his arbitration case and will be owed $575,000 by the Marlins this season. Players are now 0-for-3 in arbitration. Gregg only asked for $700,000, so this is one that wouldn't gone before a panel in most cases. The Marlins, though, did all of their negotiating before figures were exchanged. NYM: Shawn Green said the Mets have declined their half of his $10 million mutual option for 2008. The Mets never had any intention of picking it up from the moment they acquired him from the Diamondbacks in August. He'll get a $2 million buyout instead. The 34-year-old Green, who isn't promised a starting job this year, said he expects to continue his career in 2008. TB: Devil Rays designated RHP Marcos Carvajal for assignment. Carvajal, who was picked up from the Mariners in a waiver deal a year ago, had a 3.86 ERA and a 69/39 K/BB ratio in 72 1/3 IP for Double-A Montgomery last season and a 2.19 ERA in 37 innings in Venezuela over the winter. His stock has fallen, but he is worthy of a 40-man roster spot. He shouldn't go unclaimed on waivers. SEA: Fernando Vina, who was out of baseball last year after failing to make the Mariners out of spring training, has signed on with ESPN as a Baseball Tonight analyst. It seems safe to say that his career is over. Because of injuries, Vina hadn't played in the majors since 2004. His last full season was 2002. The 37-year-old hit .282/.348/.379 with 40 homers and 116 steals in 4,240 at-bats over 12 seasons. Have fun with all that :D

herky
Who gets recalled to AAA and fills Ryu's spot in the rotation? Who gets recalled to AA assuming Lopez goes to single-A? I'd move catcher Mike Mahoney from AA to AAA since he's the oldest guy on the roster, and catcher Tony Richie from A to AA since he finished last season in AA. Start Les Waldron in place of Ryu's spot in the AAA rotation. For the moment this will work.

Totte
What in the world are the Nationals thinking? :chin: From the Detroit Free Press: Young close to signing with Nats February 14, 2007 Dmitri Young, the former All-Star slugger released by the Tigers last September, is close to signing a minor league contract with the Washington Nationals. Young, who played for Washington general manager Jim Bowden while with the Cincinnati Reds, will be invited to spring training if the sides reach an agreement. Young, 33, batted .250 with seven home runs and 23 RBIs last season, but played in only 48 games. He had two stays on the disabled list with a quadriceps strain, and was away from the team for two months while undergoing treatment for drug and alcohol addictions at a California rehabilitation center. He returned with a flourish in July -- he batted .367 in nine games that month -- but hit .130 (3-for-23) in the 10 games before his abrupt release following a Sept. 6 loss to Seattle. Later that month, he was sentenced to one year of probation after pleading guilty to a domestic violence charge. Young earned an $8 million base salary in his fifth and final year in Detroit. DoubleD
Where would they play him? I suppose they could move either Nick Johnson or him to LF, as both have played the OF in their career...but would you really want one of them being a daily player in the OF? Plus than they'd have to bench someone else. I suppose they could just use him in a PH role, but I'd imagine he'd demand a decently large contract. Though considering Johnson's injury record, he'd probably see a lot of time at fist.

They signed Travis Lee as insurance but now they're looking at Young and his issues...
