Keith Foulke, you had just signed as a free agent with the Indians this off season, surprised his new team by telling them that he planned to retire.

Reportedly Foulke felt pain in his elbow in recent days and after two injury-riddled seasons in 2005 and 2006 decided to end his ten-year career. Joe Borowski, who was expected to compete with Foulke for save opportunities on the Indians, is now the stand-alone favorite to be the closer.

With some help from Anthony Reyes, Jason Isringhausen is working on his changeup.

i have ur 8.1 plus and the latest models.big and i just noticed that alex gordon on the royals has a black face and white body.

Carlos Gomez of the Binghamton Mets (Mets AA Team) also has a white head and black arms.

That's because the 07 mod and its models.big is messed up. Wait until you get the models.big by Big Shmooz in a short time and everything should be all good :)

The Pirates plan to make 2004 first-round pick Neil Walker a full-time third

baseman this year.

In an interview with KRIV-TV, Roger Clemens said there is only a 20 percent chance he'll play in 2007.

Mets sent second baseman Ruben Gotay outright to Triple-A Norfolk.

The Cubs confirmed Thursday that right-hander Adam Harben underwent Tommy John surgery in November. He'll likely miss the '07 season.

Daniel Cabrera had LASIK surgery after last season, allowing him to ditch the black corrective goggles he wore for the second half of the year.

Indians announced the retirement of RHP Keith Foulke.

Red Sox agreed to terms with outfielder Wily Mo Pena on a one-year, $1.875 million contract.

Mets designated RHP Steve Schmoll for assignment.

Carlos Zambrano and the Cubs began discussions this week on general parameters of a possible five-year deal, but GM Jim Hendry said no formal proposals and no specific dollar figures have been exchanged.

According to a pretty reputable source at the LoHud Yankees blog:

-Krazy Kyle Farnsworth threw two changeups during his time in the ‘pen. Farnsworth told me he has messed around with a change over the years and really wants to try and incorporate one this spring. Given how hard he throws, a change could be a heck of a pitch for him. Then again, there’s a reason he was once a starter and ended up in the bullpen.

-RHP Kevin Whelan is interesting to watch. He’s listed at 6-foot, 200 and isn’t that big. Not even close. A converted catcher, he throws the ball like a catcher would throw to second base. Because he has such a short motion, it’s hard to pick the ball up out of his hand. His fastball is heavy and moves a lot.

-And it’s Phil Hughes. Not Philip Hughes. He hates Philip. It’s something that happened after he was drafted. If he keeps throwing the way he is, he can call himself Deputy Dawg.

.

There is a patch coming for 07 soon hopefully, that will fix the face issues.

I would not recommend using the Big Shmooz models.big without also updating the rosters you use with 07.

I appreciate all of your input people. I know I haven't been around the boards much the last few days but the real life has been catching up with me. Guess I'm trying to express my gratitude and say thanks :)

FLA:

While Ricky Nolasco will continue to work as a starter this spring, manager Fredi Gonzalez believes he could be moved into the closer's role at a moment's notice.

A shift of Nolasco to the bullpen will undoubtedly hinge on the health of Josh Johnson and Anibal Sanhcez. If the Marlins feel confident about their other four starters, then Nolasco could make the switch. Otherwise, Taylor Tankersley, Henry Owens, Matt Lindstrom and Kevin Gregg will battle for the job.

Miguel Cabrera won his arbitration case and will make $7.4 million in 2007.

Cabrera was offered $6.7 million by the Marlins in his first year of arbitration. He's the first player to win in arbitration this year after ownership started off 4-0.

BAL:

Orioles agreed to terms with LHP Erik Bedard on a one-year, $3.4 million contract.

The Orioles' probable Opening Day starter can earn an additional $100,000 in performance bonuses: $25,000 each for 175, 185, 195 and 200 innings pitched. He asked for $4 million and was offered $2.7 million in arbitration.

Orioles sent RHP Ryan Keefer outright to Triple-A Norfolk.

Keefer was designated for assignment this week to make room on the 40-man roster for Steve Trachsel. He's out for the season following Tommy John surgery, so there was little chance that he was going to be claimed.

TOR:

While the Jays' other young starting pitching candidates would likely return to Triple-A if they don't win rotation spots, Shaun Marcum is likely to stick as a reliever.

"Say Marcum doesn't work into the rotation, then he's going to pitch out of the 'pen for us," manager John Gibbons said. "We think he can do either job very well." Casey Janssen, Dustin McGowan and Ty Taubenheim are probably Triple-A bound if Tomo Ohka and John Thomson turn in quality springs.

BUMS:

Dodgers signed catcher Kelly Stinnett to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.

With little in the way of young catching in the system, the Dodgers are loading up on veterans to play in Double- and Triple-A. Stinnett could be paired with Ken Huckaby at Las Vegas, while Sandy Martinez heads to Double-A Jacksonville.

KC:

Scott Elarton is enough ahead of schedule in his recovery from a torn labrum that he expects to pitch in games before the end of spring training.

Elarton was expected to miss at least the first two months of the season, but now it seems he could be back in May. "I'll be starting off on the mound a little slower than everyone else," he said, "but it's pretty much full-go otherwise." Elarton should have to impress in the minors before getting another crack at the rotation. He may not be one of the Royals' top five starters at any point of the season.

WAS:

Kory Casto is expected to get most of his playing time this spring as a third baseman.

It doesn't sound like he'll be much a part of the competition for the starting job in left field. Back when the Ryan Church rumors were flying, it appeared Casto had a real chance of opening the year as a regular for the Nationals. However, it now looks like Church is staying, and with the addition of Chris Snelling, it's even more likely that Casto will head to Triple-A. He probably will play left field there.

Nationals signed second baseman Ronnie Belliard to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.

It's ridiculous that some team didn't step up and make Belliard a better offer than this. He'll get $750,000 when he makes the Nationals. The club would likely win more games this year with Belliard at second and Felipe Lopez at short than with Cristian Guzmanin the starting lineup. However, since they're going to finish in last place anyway, it's likely that Guzman will have the job at the beginning of the year.

COL:

Jamey Carroll, being groomed for utility duties, will see time in the outfield this spring.

The Rockies haven't ruled out going with Carroll as their starting second baseman, but they'd prefer to see Kaz Matsui secure the job. Carroll is still likely to get most of his at-bats in the infield. He'd be a better investment in fantasy leagues if the Rockies decide to go with Clint Barmes at shortstop and sent Troy Tulowitzki to Triple-A. However, that seems unlikely to happen.

ANA:

Joe Saunders added 15 pounds of muscle over the winter and will change his between-starts routine this year in an effort to increase his stamina.

Saunders consulted with John Lackey on the change. "He gave me some good tips on keeping a good pace with all your conditioning and throwing," Saunders said. "I won't drastically alter anything but will probably throw a little less between starts. I usually long-toss one day and throw a 15-minute bullpen another day. Instead, I'll go from long toss straight to a bullpen and cut down my bullpen time." With Bartolo Colon set to miss the beginning of the year, Saunders is expected to be the Angels' fifth starter initially.

TB:

Rays manager Joe Maddon indicated that Jae Seo and Casey Fossum would join Scott Kazmir and James Shields in the rotation to begin the year.

They figured to be strong favorites, but it's surprising they're being handed spots already. That leaves just one opening for Edwin Jackson, J.P. Howell, Jae-Kuk Ryu, Brian Stokes or Jason Hammel. Jackson is out of options, so he'll likely be in the bullpen if he doesn't make the rotation.

SF:

Damian Moss, who was signed to a minor league deal in December, walked away from Giants camp on Saturday and isn't expected back.

Agent Mike Fiore said Moss had an issue he needed to resolve, and the 30-year-old left-hander is leaving the door open to playing again. Moss wasn't much of a candidate to win a spot on the Giants.

THANK GOD!!

OAK:

Dan Haren, one of the candidates to start on Opening Day for the A's, has been working on a cut fastball over the winter.

"He's always had it, but he never really used it much," said Jason Kendall, who caught Haren's bullpen session Saturday. "But it was really good today, and I know he's been working on it. Obviously, it's only the first day, but if he has that weapon in his arsenal... " Regardless of how the cutter comes along, Haren seems likely to bring down his ERA a bit this year.

Quick Question: With UR - isn't Ryan Howard signed for four years or so with the Phils? 'Cause I remember them talking about not having to sign him right away. Is this correct? And if so could you [Totte] change it in UR?

Thanks a bunch

FLA:

Marlins released RHP Jimmy Serrano.

Serrano, who was in camp on a minor league deal, flunked his physical with an undisclosed injury. He was expected to pitch at Triple-A Albuquerque.

TOR:

The Blue Jays will likely have Dustin McGowan in the rotation at Triple-A Syracuse to begin the season.

McGowan opened last year in Syracuse's bullpen before later going back to starting games. He ended the season as a part of the Toronto bullpen. "He's got to get innings one way or another," manager John Gibbons said. "As a long [reliever] or a middle guy, where he may not pitch consistently, I think that sets him back at this stage. I don't want to see him do that, because he needs to pitch." The Blue Jays haven't ruled out having McGowan in the rotation in the majors, but since he was granted an extra option year, it's very unlikely that he'll make the team.

CHC:

Cubs manager Lou Piniella likes the idea of Jacque Jones batting second or fifth.

Not that we're surprised at all, but Michael Barrett, who has had better on-base percentages and slugging percentages than Jones three years running, continues to get very little respect from his club. Piniella indicated that Cliff Floyd would likely bat fifth if Jones didn't.

NYM:

Mets sent RHP Steve Schmoll outright to Triple-A New Orleans.

Schmoll was designated for assignment to open up a spot for Marcos Carvajal last week. He'll be in Mets camp as a non-roster player.

SD:

Padres signed infielder Oscar Robles to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.

The Dodgers sold Robles back to Mexico earlier this month, but that apparently didn't take. The 30-year-old Robles is a better option as a fill-in shortstop than usual fallback Manny Alexander. He'll probably open the year at Triple-A Portland.

OAK:

Nick Swisher, who was down to 195 pounds last summer after battling mono, showed up at camp having added, in his estimation, 20 pounds of muscle.

Swisher said he weighed in 220 pounds. He also indicated he'd have no problem switching back and forth between the outfield and first base this year if that's how the A's want to do it. First baseman Dan Johnson and left fielder Shannon Stewart are set to battle for playing time.
