More Jays updates:

Victor Zambrano is ahead of schedule in his recovery and might very well be ready for opening day. If he does continue to show that he's ready he could crack the rotation as the 5th starter over Ohka, although it's more likely he'll be in the bullpen to start the season. Especially if League starts the season on the DL which is still a possibility.

Frank Thomas and Reed Johnson made their first starts of Spring Training in a B-game yesterday. Alex Rios also started in the outfield for the first time. All of them are expected to be in the lineup in this afternoon's game. Johnson and Rios have been battling minor injuries, Rios started a couple games as the DH because his throwing shoulder was a bit sore. He seems fine now. Johnson had back pain. Thomas was just behind schedule in his workout regiment.

Tomo Ohka was very good yesterday against Boston going 3 innings and allowing just 1 hit while K'ing 2. His chances of making the starting rotation have improved with this start.

Casey Janssen had another good appearance in this game as well. He went 2 innings allowing just a couple odd choppers for basehits and a couple runs (one being unearned on an error to Russ Adams).

Jason Smith went 4-for-4 with a home and a double in yesterday's game as well.

8 being 80?

Heard an inside tip on him that he's looking really unsmooth, stiff, not making the turn very well to 1st. Maybe set it lower. Just a tip I heard on the radio for Spring Training.

Jays notes:

1B Kevin Barker played some LF in today's game, while Rob Cosby played in RF. Barker now plays 1B, DH, RF and LF. I'd still leave him as 1B/RF though. He probably won't play much in the outfield this season but the versatility will probably make him more sought out if the Jays opt to trade him to make room for some of their prospects to move up to AAA.

INF Aaron Hill left the game with an undisclosed injury. No word on his status.

OF Ryan Patterson who left yesterday's game with an injury now will be sidelined with a broken arm. He was scheduled to begin the season in AA and will now miss the first month or two of the season, meaning he may not receive a call to AAA this year.

P Danny Core faced one batter, cleaning up P Kyle Yates' mess in the 9th. Each had their first appearance of the Spring after being recalled from minor league camp mid week. Both will probably be in AA to start the season. Core could start in High A though.

P Beau Kemp got roughed up for 5 runs (all earned in 1/3 of an inning of work). He allowed 3 hits and walked 3 batters. Despite spending most of the last 3 seasons in AAA in the Minnesota organization, he could still wind up in AA New Hampshire to start the season if he continues to struggle in the spring.

Rich Hill will start the regular season in the fourth spot of the Cubs' starting rotation.

And Ryan Theriot is a lock to make the team according to Lou. Ronny Cedeno's chances of making the team are slim, as Piniella is considereing carrying only one utility IF.

Jays notes:

Ray Olmedo started today's game at 3B. You can put his alt. position as INF if you haven't yet.

Josh Towers had a strong start going 3 innings. He allowed 2 hits, no runs, walked no one and struck out 2 in the outing. He also had a basehit. Towers has allowed just one run in 5 innings of work so far this spring.

Dustin McGowan ended up blowing the lead in 6th inning as the Jays eventually lost 4-1. He pitched 1.1 scoreless innings in his last appearance and has now gone 3.1 innings. He's still very likely to open the season in the Syracuse (AAA) rotation.

Geremi Gonzalez pitched 2 strong innings, allowing no runs on 3 hits. Gonzalez has allowed 3 runs on 7 hits over 5 innings.

Jeff Duncan continued his strong bid to make the team as the 4th outfielder. He went 2-for-4 leading off the game and is now hitting .421 this spring in 8 games. He's still unlikely to make the team at all though with Stairs and Adam Lind ahead of him on the depth chart.

Speaking of Stairs, he had a strong game batting third. He went 2-for-3 with a triple and drove in the lone Jays run in the contest. If Stairs does not make the team, Duncan or John-Ford Griffin are the most likely candidates as the 4th outfielder.

Just a small note, to add on to my list of players who need to have removed "Top Prospect" status, Conor Jackson no longer qualifies.

I'm just going through the players and double checking, thats all.
