cybernetic
Jays notes: RP Davis Romero has been diagnosed with a torn labrum. He has not pitched at all this spring and suffered the injury in the off-season. He will undergo season-ending surgery and miss all of 2007. Following yesterday's game, RP Matt Roney was optioned to Syracuse (AAA) and is now officially out of the running for a bullpen spot. Here's the bullpen possibilities. Locks: B.J. Ryan, Scott Downs, Jason Frasor, Brandon League (could begin season on DL). Candidates: Jeremy Accardo, Brian Tallet (bad spring so far), Francisco Rosario (must be carried or exposed to waivers), Casey Janssen, Shaun Marcum, Victor Zambrano, Pete Walker. A couple other non-roster invitees are in the running such as Blaine Neal, Geremi Gonzalez and Lee Gronkiewicz. More than likely the bullpen will be filled with Accardo, Tallet and Rosario.. and possibly one other if League is DLed. Janssen, Marcum and Zambrano are still also in the running for the rotation. Based on pure performance I'd say that Josh Towers and John Thomson have the edge at this point for the last 2 rotation spots. Both Ohka and Thomson have each had a rough start of their three starts but Thomson was better in his 2 good starts than Ohka was in his. The other candidates have note yet made a spring start so it's hard to gauge them on just relief appearances. Ohka has only made 2 starts, but both have him promising. cybernetic
Jays notes: OF Reed Johnson went 2-for-3 with a solo home run in today's game and seems to be on track to be ready to go for the start of the season. He missed the first week or so of the spring with an injury. INF Royce Clayton continued his struggles offensively this spring going 0-for-3 but he did record an RBI. His average dropped to .154. Shaun Marcum started the game today and was less than stellar in his first start of the spring. He went 3 innings allowing 3 runs (2 earned) on 4 hits. The good news is he didn't walk anyone and recorded 3 K's in that span. His ERA now is at 6.30. Jeremy Accardo got roughed up allowing his first 3 runs of the spring and getting the loss in an inning of work. OF Adam Lind was optioned to Syracuse (AAA). He hit .308 in limited duty. He basically was relegated to the bench when Reed Johnson returned and was never really a contender to make the outfield unless Johnson started the season on the DL. cubsfaninfla
Sorry if this has been reported: Jason Simontacchi is the heavy favorite for the third spot in the Nationals rotation behind John Patterson and Shawn Hill. Jerome Williams, Joel Hanrahan, Tim Redding, Jason Bergmann and Matt Chico are still contending for a place in the starting rotation. Simontacchi hasn't throw a pitch in the major leagues since October 2, 2004.

cybernetic
Jays notes: SP Roy Halladay's Friday start was rained out so he started yesterday in a minor league game. He allowed just 3 hits over 5 scoreless innings and struck out 7 while walking none. RP Brandon League also appeared in that game and pitched a scoreless frame with 2 K's. He declared himself ready to rejoin the big league team. SP Gustavo Chacin who was arrested for a DUI in the middle of the week had his Saturday start skipped and will start after Burnett's next start. He pitched a AA game against Philadelphia's affiliate. He did not have a great outing going 5 innings, allowing 2 runs. SP A.J. Burnett didn't have a great outing against Houston on Sunday. He went 4.1 innings and allowed 4 runs on 4 hits, walked 3 and struck out just 2. He left with the bases loaded in the 5th with just 1 out. Casey Janssen allowed all 3 runners to score making it 4-0 for the Astros. Manager John Gibbons declared earlier in the week that the bench will be C Jason Phillips, RF/LF/1B Matt Stairs, INF Jason Smith and INF John McDonald to start the season. As a result OF Adam Lind, INF Russ Adams, INF John Hattig and INF Rob Cosby were all sent to Syracuse (AAA) along with SP/RP Ty Taubenheim. Taubenheim is expected to be in the bullpen for Syracuse. The Jays rallied for 3 runs in the top of the 6th to pull within one. OF Reed Johnson, INF Jason Smith and OF Alex Rios drove in the runs in the frame. They ultimately lost by that final score of 4-3.
cubsfaninfla
Edward Campusano-R- Tigers Mar. 18 - 6:55 pm et Edward Campusano left Sunday's game with left elbow discomfort and is scheduled to be re-examined on Monday. If it's significant at all, the Tigers could use the injury as an excuse to put the Rule 5 pick on the DL for the first month or two of the season. Source: Tigers.mlb.com __________________________________________________________ Depending on the diagnosis, the Tigers' relief picture could become more complicated. Campusano was looking strong as a second left-handed relief option alongside Wilfredo Ledezma, a race that includes Bobby Seay, Felix Heredia and Tim Byrdak. Bobby Seay has the best stats out of the three, so he has the best chance of making the team.
cybernetic
Blue Jays reassigned 1B Kevin Barker, C Curtis Thigpen, INF Ryan Roberts, OF Chad Mottola and OF John-Ford Griffin to Minor League camp. None of these moves are a surprise but just worth noting. FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal says the Jays will likely trade or release John Thomson prior to Opening Day. Such a move would clear a rotation spot for Josh Towers. That the Jays want to go down that road again seems like a bad sign to us, but at least they wouldn't locked into him, not with Shaun Marcum and Casey Janssen in reserve. Because he was signed as a free agent over the winter, Thomson would have to approve any trade. The A's could do worse than to bring him in as their fifth starter. The Mets made him an offer before he signed with Toronto, but they couldn't bring him in now, not after he insulted Paul Lo Duca.

southside_hitmen
Read in the Chicago tribune today that Erstad will hit no. 2 against righties and start in CF. That moves Iguchi down into the 6,7,or 8 spot. Also read in the trib, that Angel Guzman will take over the long-reliever spot while Miller is a virtual lock for the #5 spot. Prior was reassigned to minor league camp, so you should drop him down to AAA. Also, Rich Hill has a slider: "Today was a great step forward," Hill said. "I threw all four pitches. To me, they were above average -- good changeup, slider, fastball, curve. Everything was right there." I don't think he has a cutter though, so might want to take it out. DustinTheWin
Some Red Sox scouting reports that you may want to reconsider some ratings from C George Kottaras Scouting Report: Offensive-minded catcher with 15-20 home run power potential and excellent plate discipline. Struggles a bit against left handed pitching. His patience at the plate has lead to leaving his bat on his shoulders a bit too much. Strong arm with average accuracy, but Kottaras lacks quickness in his release when throwing runners out. Average glove. Scouts claim that his catching flaws are correctable. Could stand to add a little bit of bulk. Has experience catching knuckleballer Steve Sparks. MLB Comparison: Brian McCann SS/IF Jed Lowrie Scouting Report: Excellent fielder with a strong arm and above average range. Many scouts claim that he will be better suited at second base down the line. Above average speed on the basepaths. Previously demonstrated good power for a middle infielder. Hits equally from both sides of the plate. Outstanding plate discipline. Smart and athletic. Struggled through injuries for most of the 2006 season. MLB Comparison: Craig Counsell RP Kyle Jackson Scouting Report: Former Alvirne High School star has battled some injury problems, but pitched very impressively in 2003 for GCL and Lowell. Fastball reaches low 90s. Strikeout-to-walk ratio is consistently over 3:1. MLB Comparison: Justin Speier 2B/SS Dustin Pedroia Scouting Report: Small infielder had a tremendous career at Arizona State. Average power for a middle infielder, with good bat speed and excellent plate discipline. Loves the game and has fantastic instincts. Plays top-notch defense up the middle, named the 2003 National Defensive Player of the Year. Very scrappy; a great teammate. Has pro experience at both shortstop and second base; many scouts project him to be better suited for second base down the line. Overall, Pedroia may not be an all-star, but is likely to be a dependable second baseman at the major league level, which is a great asset for any team, especially on a cost-controlled basis. MLB Comparison: Marcus Giles RF/OF Brandon Moss Scouting Report: Athletic outfielder with a good arm. Excellent approach at the plate - good swing with a raw power. Moss is a competitor. He didn't show much at the plate in his first two professional seasons, but put in a good amount of work in the off-season prior to 2004, producing an outstanding 2004 season in all respects. MLB Comparison: Todd Benzinger RP Edgar Martinez Scouting Report: Converted from catcher to a pitcher in July 2004 after unimpressive numbers at the plate. The transition to pitching has shown signs of success later in late 2004 and 2005. Fastball sits in the mid-90s and reaches 97 mph with good movement. Two-seamer sits around 91. Also throws an improving changeup and slider. Needs to keep control consistent, has given up too many home runs leaving the ball up in the zone. MLB Comparison: Rich Garces 1B/DH Luis A. Jimenez Scouting Report: Big Venezuelan has very high power potential but strikes out a ton. Still manages to maintain a high OBP. Actually has decent speed for a man of his size. Has MLB potential if he can show more plate discipline and a little more consistency. Gives it his all every game. Defensively, Jimenez lacks great lateral quickness, but his glove is decent.
