Jays notes:

The Jays are considering putting RP Brandon League on the DL to start the season. Even if they don't, he's likely to only pitch in minor league games for the remainder of the spring.

RP B.J. Ryan will be unavailable for the next few days due to a sore back. He's still expected to be ready for opening day.

OF Mike Vento, RP Pete Walker and INF Ray Olmedo were reassigned to minor league camp. Walker could opt for free agency or retire altogether which is more likely at 38 years old. With those moves, the Jays now have 35 players in major league camp (including 8 non-roster invitees).

SP Tomo Ohka put in a strong start against the New York Yankees today. He allowed 1 run on just 3 hits over 5 innings. He's been outstanding in his last 3 starts after a rough appearance in relief to open the spring.

C Gregg Zaun had 3 RBI while 1B Lyle Overbay and Aaron Hill had 2 RBI a piece in today's 9-1 victory over the Yankees. Zaun hit a 3-run home run in the 5th inning off reliever Chris Britton. Jason Smith and Alex Rios each had an RBI a piece.

SP/RP Victor Zambrano threw 4 scoreless frames in relief of Ohka for a save. He allowed just 3 hits in that span. The Jays are seriously considering using him in the rotation to start the season.

SP John Thomson was roughed up in a minor league game. He allowed 6 runs over 4 innings against the Yankees AAA team.

Some people would think that they'd make Francis the ace, but seriously, Cook is a good pitcher considering he pitches in Coors.

But where would Cook end up in the rotation for another team? Probably 4th or 5th right?

Na, I'd say more like top 20... Maaayyyybee. He's not actually that good even factoring in the Coors effect.

On the other hand, Jason Jennings is probably top-20 when you consider his numbers. He was better then Cook was.

Okay - so forgive me if this was answered before, I really don't have time currently to go browsing through 50 pages of material.

When do you update the ratings for players?

Thanks

MLB players were updated after the end of the regular season. Minor leaguers are just updated as recommended

The 2006 stats were calculated into new ratings and added to the rosters around X-mas if I'm not mistaken

The Chicago Cubs today announced its second round of roster cuts, reducing its spring roster from 44 players to 36 players.

Left-handed pitcher Sean Marshall, right-handed pitcher Carlos Marmol and catcher Geovany Soto have been optioned to Triple-A Iowa.

Five non-roster invitees have been returned to minor league camp, including left-handed pitchers Ryan O'Malley and Carmen Pignatiello. Infielders Casey McGehee and Micah Hoffpauir, as well as catcher Jake Fox, have also been returned to minor league camp.

Chicago's spring roster of 36 players consists of 18 pitchers (one non-roster invitee, LHP Les Walrond), three catchers (one non-roster invitee, Koyie Hill), eight infielders (one non-roster invitee, Tomas Perez) and seven outfielders.

Some Cubs notes:

Don't expect a straight left-right platoon in left field between Matt Murton and Cliff Floyd when the regular season starts. Murton will likely get most of the playing time while Floyd will be used prudently to avoid reinjuring his left foot. Floyd, a left-handed hitter, has a career .281 average against right-handers, and .272 average against lefties. Murton, a right-handed hitter, has a .329 average against lefties and .289 against right-handers. Murton has looked better defensively than Floyd in left.

Rocky Cherry came to spring intent on impressing the Cubs. He's done that. The right-hander has given up runs in one of his eight outings, serving up five hits and four walks over eight innings. He and Les Walrond have pitched in the most games this spring for the Cubs. Cherry has been used as a starter in the Minor Leagues until last season.

Piniella has mentioned Cherry and Angel Guzman as finalists for the bullpen. And if he ends up being the closer at Triple-A Iowa instead? "I thought about that," Cherry said. "I thought that since I had a couple saves this spring, they might put me in that role. Whatever they want me to do, I'll do. I just hope I can help this year."

Michael Wuertz has made the Opening Day 25-man roster.

Hey Totte, with Matsuzaka's in-game delivery, his curveball and slider are practically the same. i was wondering perhaps he should be getting a 4-seam with some lateral movement. a 74 mph screwball (his changeup). i've been watching the clips on mlb.com and it seems that he's got a very nasty changeup and a 4 seamer with very good late movement. any thoughts people?

Jays notes:

Jays didn't play yesterday so that was the reason for no notes.

SP Josh Towers' bid to make the opening day rotation took a hit today as he had a rough outing. He went 4 2/3 innings allowing 5 runs on 9 hits, 1 BB, 1 HBP and 4 K's. He left with a 6-5 lead that was blown by RP Jeremy Accardo. His ERA balooned from 2.00 to 4.61.

Accardo went 1 1/3 innings and allowed 2 runs on 2 hits (including a HR). His spring ERA is now at 6.75 after 2 straight rough outings. His chances to make the opening day bullpen have faltered of late. He also took the loss in a 10-6 win for Philadelphia.

DH Frank Thomas had a strong game going 2/3 with a 2B, a 2-R HR and 3 RBI. His spring average is now at .267.

RF Alex Rios went 3/3 with 2 singles and a 2B bumping his average to .343.

3B Troy Glaus went 1/3 with a 2-run home run today.

OF Cory Patton got into his first spring game going 1/2 with a triple. He replaced Reed Johnson in the 6th inning in left field. He'll likely begin the season in High-A.

INF Ryan Roberts continued his hot hitting spring going 1/1 with a double. He's now batting .444 but has almost no shot at making the team after being removed from the 40-man roster earlier in the year. He'll begin the year in AAA.

SP/RP Scott Downs pitched an inning, allowing a run on a solo home run to Wes Helms. He's almost 100% to make the bullpen out of camp. His spring ERA is now at 3.86.

SP/RP Brian Wolfe pitched his 5th scoreless frame of the spring. He didn't allowed a hit, walked one batter and had 2 K's. He will likely begin the year in High-A after an injury-riddled 2006 season where he struggled in both AA and High-A.

RP Blaine Neal pitched an inning today allowing a couple of runs on 4 hits. His ERA took a huge hit going from 1.80 to 4.50. Regardless of this result, he's ticketed to begin the year in either AAA or AA.

some more Jays notes:

John Thomson is scheduled to undergo an MRI because of a shoulder problem.

So much for the thought that he might have any trade value. "He's just got a tight shoulder right now," GM J.P. Ricciardi said. "We're going to shut him down for five or six days and just give him a chance to build it up a little bit and rest it up a little bit." The injury means Thomson will likely open the season in the DL. He was possibly on his way to being released before getting hurt.

The Blue Jays are one of five teams showing interest in Cuban pitcher Edysbel Benitez, according to agent Joe Rosario.

Benitez, 22, defected two years ago. He spent the winter pitching in the Nicaraguan Winter Baseball League -- a clear step down in quality from the four main winter leagues -- and had a 3.38 ERA in 72 innings. "He's major league-ready right now," said Rosario, who is seeking a three-year big-league deal for the pitcher. "If a deal gets done, he'd probably only need four or five games in Triple-A and then I think he'd be ready." It's more likely that he'll spend the entire season in the minors after signing.

SS Royce Clayton will be out the next couple of games with the flu.

Jays note:

RP Pete Walker was officially released today

RP Matt Roney was sent outright to Syracuse (AAA). There are now 39 players on the 40-man roster. Eventually Matt Stairs will be added before the season starts.

DH Frank Thomas homered in the 2nd straight game.

Roy Halladay threw 6 innings and allowed 3 runs (all on a 3 run home run by Brad Eldred in the 4th inning). He didn't walked anyone and struck out 2.

Franciscio Rosario, Jason Frasor and Shaun Marcum each threw a scoreless inning in relief of Halladay.

John Thomson will likely be granted his release shortly and it is not dependent on the result of his MRI on his shoulder.

RP Brian Wolfe pitched his 6th consecutive scoreless frame of the spring.

RP Blaine Neal pitched a scoreless inning.

RP Beau Kemp pitched a scoreless 9th for the win in a come from behind 6-5 win over the Twins (his former team).

OF/DH Matt Stairs, INF Jason Smith, OF Eric Nielsen, OF Aaron Mathews, OF Jeff Duncan and C John Schneider each had an RBI.

INF Jason Smith and OF Aaron Mathews each went 2-for-4 in the contest. Mathews is ticketed to either High-A or AA.

DH Matt Stairs went 1-for-1 with a walk today. His spring average is now at a sizzling .455.

The Chicago Cubs today announced that right-handed pitcher Roberto Novoa has been optioned to Triple-A Iowa. The Cubs' spring roster now stands at 35 players.
