HypnoxXx
I'll give it another day or so (plus I have to see what llcmac thinks), but right now, baseballfanatik seems like the only taker right now for "Update Secretary". Stay tuned.
GForce22
Based on my system (not weighing TotalMinors stat projections), the Giants would have 2 4-star prospects (Cain, Valdez) 12 3-star prospects at least 6 2-star prospects This doesn't include anyone with significant MLB experience obviously. bbythepier
Really rough guideline I used last year was using John Sickels' prospect handbook (since he, like me, tends to grade somewhat conservatively). A or A+ = 5 B+ or A - = 4 C+, B- or B = 3 C or C- = 2 Prospects not in the book = 1 If my TotalMinors potential projections (which are not part of the prospect creator sheet, but I should really add again) said something drastically different than this I adjusted, but basically this was how I did star rating. GH GForce, While I don't expect you to remember exactly, what was the approximate breakdown using Sickels book?
bbythepier
Mark another prospect off the cheap list: Victor Martinez-C (CLE) 5 yrs., $15.5 mill. Chicago White Sox Minors AAA- Charlotte Bobby Jenks- “…In his four appearances last year, his velocity was down and his curve lacked its usual sharp break…†Jeff Bajenaru- “…operates w/ two pitches, a low 90s sinker and a splitter (yes that is right)…†No mention of any off-speed pitch. IF he has one, it’s extremely raw. Munoz- “…dynamite curveball LACKED its usual sharpness and he lost track of the strike zone…needs to regain confidence in his 90 mph fastball…†McCarthy- “…best pitch is his 2-seam fastball that generally parks around 90 mph (in the game it’s a distant 3rd) and a 4-seam that hits 92-93 mph…also has a plus curveball…hrows strikes at will…can get better w/ his changeup and he has started to make progress…†Felix Diaz- looks correct AA-Birmingham I don’t know if this guy has fully healed, but the repertoire is way off Kris Honel “…top pitching prospect in system last year…struggled w/ shoulder tendonitis all year…knuckle-curve has a sharp break and he can generally throw it for strikes in any count…has good command…velocity seems to be a constant struggle…changeup is a clear 3rd pitch…White Sox are crossing their fingers he comes to camp healthy…and ready to pitch in AA…†I think these need to be created or imported Sean Tracy- SP, RHP “…can run his 93-94 mph fastball up to 97…has the basic Kevin Brown Package: a hard sinker…and a 4-seam fastball…also uses a hard slider…led the league in BB and HBP, but has shown improvement (?)…a better changeup would complement his power stuff…a full season at AA is the next step…†Dwayne Pollock- “…saved 38 games to tie for minor league lead…has improved his slider to where it’s the best in the system…gained velocity on his sinker, which now reaches 90 on occasion…forces hitter to beat him by throwing strikes…Chicago will test him at AA this year…†All other prospects are projected for A ball or below If someone has a Birmingham roster I can check to see if any were “fast-tracked†

bbythepier
MLB- Cincinnati Reds D. Graves- His ratings are based on 2-3 yrs. Ago: 41 sv., but 9 blown saves and 6 losses Scouting: http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/scouting?statsId=5649 Quote from scout: “His stuff doesn’t stand out for a closer.†While the order of effectiveness is correct (sinker is best), his fastball, changeup, slurve, and 2-seam need to be downgraded a little bit. Look at the report: relies almost exclusively on his sinker as a closer. A. Harang- This dude has a career 5.00 ERA, w/ very little deviation, yet his stuff is above-average? I see no mention of a cutter at all. His only PLUS pitch is the changeup, which EA has as his worst. Fastball TOUCHES 90. Fastball needs to be notched down to 89-90 mph. “Decent†slider is about right. “Throws a big loop curveball to leftiesâ€: Curve should be about 70-72mph. “Starting to use his splitter (or 2-seam) as an out pitchâ€- S.N. Translation: 1. Change – mid 80s 2. 2-seam (splitter movement)- 80-ish 3. Fastball- high 70s 4. Curve- mid/ high 70s 5. Slider- low 70s If you’re so inclined, look at a guy like Cory Lidle in terms of stuff, stats, age, etc. compared to Harang. I think Lidle is well represented in his stuff. Harang has “too much†stuff. K. Mercker- I understand this guy is getting older, but EA has him falling of the map. His stats last year were 71 app., 2.55 ERA, .205 BA against “…fastball at 90-92 mph…throws a cut fastball…hard slider…and circle change…his money pitch is his change…†Translation: get that slurve out of here and make it a 85 mph slider in the 80-ish range, make the change a circle and make it better in the mid 80s, give him a low 80s cut fastball at about 88 mph and a high 70s 4-seam at 91 mph. E. Milton- “He will throw his changeup if he gets behind and doesn't want to challenge that particular hitter. He throws a straight change that has a tendency to fade away from right-handed hitters.†“Milton throws a curve, a changeup and a 92-94 MPH fastball that he'll cut inside to a righthanded hitter.†“â€He also throws a slider, curveball, and a straight changeup..†Translation: Get that 2-seam out of here. Make that change a regular, not circle. Loves to throw the high, straight as an arrow fastball (hence led the league in dingers against). 1. Fastball mid 80s 2.Cut fastball low 80s 3. Curve 80-ish 4. Slider high 70s 5. Changeup 70-ish R. Ortiz “…a circle change with fading action…He throws his changeup anytime in the count…†Translation: Make his change a circle and increase its rating to mid 80s. Find me one scouting report that says he’s consistent with his 4-seamer. 88 control? Uh, no. 4-seam rating- mid/low 80s due to control issues. R. Wagner “…Wagner falls in love with his slider, a quality pitch but one that major league hitters learned to lay off as it dived out of the strike zone…†“… a sharp, late-breaking slider…†“…92-93 fastball with sink and run…†Translation: He doesn’t have a straight-as-an-arrow fastball, but instead a 2-seam runner. Also the slurve is bogus. Instead throws a slider w/ similar characteristics. Man I love this game. Did the ratings creators watch any baseball games whatsoever? Check this one out. Ben Weber- Last year has to be looked at a sort of aberration due to finger injury. STATS scouting: “His out pitch is a nasty sinkerâ€, which any Angels fan will attest to. ITâ€S HIS WORST RATED PITCH. “Breaking ball is a slurve, and his hard turnover change runs from lefthanders†Translation: 4-seam fastball should have less control (mid 70-ish rating overall), Sinker should a 9 or 10 movement, w/ overall in mid 80s, slurve- 80-ish, changeup mid 70s P. Wilson “…he has made himself into a very competitive pitcher by refining his changeup and using the movement of a good cutter and sinker to keep batters off balance.†“His slider is a true cut fastball with quick-running action. Likes to throw his curve early to lefties†“Splitter is his out pitch, but he doesn’t set it up off his fastball; is more of a change-of-speed pitch w/ good sink.†Translation: I don’t care what you call it, splitter or sinker, he has neither in the game yet it is his “out pitch†**sigh** OK. 1. Sinker – high/mid 80s 2. Cutter – low 80s 3. changeup high 70s 4. curve mid 70s D. Weathers “While he is particularly effective against righthanded hitters, he throws his sharp slider that sits at 82-84 MPH to batters from both sides of the plate and is superb at inducing groundballs in double-play situations.†“…is a sinker/slider pitcher w/ a fastball that ranges from 87-90 mph…effective on boring his sinker in on righties…†Translation: A straight 4-seamer is his worst and least used pitch. 1. Sinker mid 80s 2. Slider 80-ish 3. 4-seam mid 70s

bbythepier
.. Luis Hernandez needs some major work... He is a defensive wizard and in the rosters he doesn't resemble that at all... He'll most likely be the shortstop in Atlanta next year if Furcal doesn't resign... And a pitcher you didn't mention for the Braves... Buddy Hernandez should be in the majors right now... all he does is get people out but isn't getting respect from the Braves management... He's dominated the minor leagues so he should be one of the best relievers in the minors but in the game he's not even one of the better one's on the Mississippi team... Needless to say he needs some attribute and potential tweaking... We'll get to L. Hernandez, the Braves top shortstop prospect, I promise. And if we can get rid of Durham's big contract and your boy Furcal can play 2B for a year until Vizquel retires, he can come be our leadoff man next year. Maybe the Braves need a little pitching at the deadline. Haha Buddy Hernandez, RHP, Posted 1.22 ERA in 40 games for Double-A Greenville in the Southern League, with 81 strikeouts in 59 innings. Scouts don't like him because he's a short right-hander, but he has a good fastball, and a killer breaking ball. His strikeout rates are extremely high, a good sign, and he would slot well as a middle man in major league bullpens right now. Chance to stick: Very good. Chance to do something interesting: Good. one thing i noticed.... could you please review the hot/cold zones for todd hollandsworth of the cubs? I know hes no barry bonds, but to have only 1 hot zone and cold zones DOWN THE MIDDLE when facing rhp's seems a lil over the edge of screwing him out of the ratings he deserves... he did hit .318 last year and 8 hr's in 57 games, mostly as a ph until sosa got injured I figured I had picked on jhath enough, I'll pick him up on this one, just for kicks. (Other than the big stars, hot/cold zone tweaks are at the bottom of the priority list, I think) Hollandworth- "likes the ball low and will look to pull"- S.N. Translation: Typical lefty- Hot zone down the middle and two bottom zones, middle/in Does anyone else think iguchi needs to be athletic build? Because hes much bigger than ichiro( whom he looks exactly like in the rosters.) Yes. Ichiro looks like a toothpick, Iguchi is much more stout. bbythepier
DMZ, sorry for the BS site. (I hit and it makes you become a member. Bullsh#@! Here's a cut from it : "Even at full strength, Walker is not a power pitcher, though. He needs his control to mix his sinker, slider and cut fastball." Also, what is a good scouting report site for major leaguers? any help is greatly appreciated. I've yet to find a great one online. Hell, I haven't even found the end all in print. One scout interpretation is different from another. That's why I mix them altogether and come to a consensus. This magazine is my favorite: http://www.sportingnews.com/books/baseball/05scguide.html It has an index at the end so players are easy to find, each position is ranked, and full repertoires are given. This is not that STATS cr@p that is so often associated w/ Sporting News (and ESPN's web site). On the Cover: "ALL PLAYERS evaluated, ranked and graded by big-league scouts" One example: STATS scouting makes not mention of Rich Harden's splitter. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/scouting?statsId=7180 Yet, if you're sitting behind homeplate at the Coliseum next to the guy with a miliion pins in his ballcap and try to tell him he doesn't throw a "wicked" splitter, he'll look at you like a moron. From the magazine I mentioned. "Spliiter has late bite"
bbythepier
Another example: Roy Halladay Look at his scouting at on ESPN. It mentions "curveball". I say it's a knuckle-curve. Some Jays fan came into the thread pissed because some poster in his room or something showed his grip wasn't a knuckle-curve. Yet this 2005 magazine explicity says: "Knuckle curve is a good changeup for him. " Am I supposed to believe some dude with a picture album of Halladay or the words from big league scouts? Reminder My "guess-timates" on ratings are just that. I am NOT blind to the fact that simulations will have to be done so that year-end stats can be compared. But I will tell you, from my engineering experience, simulating incrementally is NOT the way to do it. Simulating should only occur after all suggested tweaks are taken into account. Any defensive or hitting "tweaks" will ultimately effect pitching stats and vice versa. In my line of work it's called "simulating the system, not the components". You can if you want, but your results may be skewed. Somebody for kicks: Please look at Derek Lowe's stats for the last three years. Then look at Jason Schmidt's stats for the last three years. Now look at Lowe's pitching ratings in the game. Next Schmidt's. Does anybody see something wrong?
Royal Blues
Ok, I'm feeling really stupid here...I was using the Real Baseball System roster but changed over to this one. I'm not sure if I did something wrong (I dropped all the dat files into the database folder, imported through mvpedit and saved the new mbe file), or if I overlooked something. I was going through all the portraits and redoing the ID's for created players since I changed rosters, and I noticed several players are both on their team and in the FA pool, and I'm getting an error when I try to pull up the FA list: Run-time error '35602': Key is not unique in collection. Any idea what could be causing this?

bbythepier
Royal Blues & Hollinger, Welcome to the Ultimate Roster. As you'll notice, a lot of suggestions and corrections are yet to be made. As for your errors: The authors have only offered the DAT version of the rosters. You don't need to use MVPedit to install them. BUT if you want to keep your other roster, so you can use it later, save it in game. Now extract the Ultimate Roster files (excluding the ReadMe, although it won't hurt) directly into your MVP/data/database file, bypassing MVPedit. Say Yes to All to overwrite. Then if you want import these files into MVPedit, being sure to select the database file (open data file and select database). Now you can make adjustments to any ID #'s. I don't get the error when opening the FA list or don't see any FA duplicates. Just players that were released from their original teams who are in limbo right now. How about updating player postions and rosters! If you're looking for an update every 3 days, you've come to the wrong place. Don't expect an update right away, but do expect the next update to include yours and THOUSANDS OF OTHER ADJUSTMENTS. Just take a look at the thread since version 1 was released. Nobody here is on a payroll.
