bbythepier
Kirk Saarloos is a beast. Now that Yabba Yabba Yabu is in the pen, the 5th spot is either Etherton or Saarloos. My money is on the kid from Cal State Fullerton.(I hate USC) And to think he barely made Moneyball’s staff. I’ve always liked him since college. O's update: Erik Bedard's pitches - 94 mph fastball, 79 mph curve/slurve (it has a 2-8 break, looks a lot like a slurve, hard break and sweeps), and a change up he threw anywhere from 80-84. (This might be better PM’d, but I don’t care and I know there are other O’s fans out there.) Stuff I noticed from A’s/O’s I TIVO’d tonight. Good call on Bedard’s “snapper†curve (about 81 mph, not 77 as in roster), not Zito-like. He looks very good, just one critical comment: his 93 mph fastball is very straight and he needs a little work on his change. Everything seems hard. Kline seemed to be throwing a “tailing two-seamer†(which Byrnes jacked) and a couple “cutters†to Kendall. I didn’t see his sinker. Julio stills seems like he’s pitching with Braille, but looks a little better. Gibbons gets my vote for “Bonehead Play of the Year†so far, and Matos looked uncomfortable in CF (maybe just that play). abacusand13south
And to think he barely made Moneyball’s staff. I’ve always liked him since college. Not that this is directed at you bbythepier but your comment reminded me off something I was going to show everyone 2 weeks ago when I originally read it, its from a great indians site that I frequently visit call "The Indians Compendium" it was posted on march the 24th. The Moneyball Enigma I'm pretty tired of season previews and player profiles right now (although I am working on my long-neglected prospect profiles), so I want to delve into organizational strategies again. The buzzword among baseball television analysts in recent years has been "Moneyball". To some it means geeks pounding away at keyboards in the Oakland front office. Whenever I'm bored enough to turn on "Baseball Tonight," usually a Moneyball-related zinger gets thrown out by one of the many of their esteemed commentators that is really totally unrelated to the thesis of the book. Sometimes I hear backlashes on radio broadcasts, usually off-hand references to closers or strikeouts or even on-base precentage. It seems that the book has perpetuated a myth that continues to grow to this day; that Moneyball is all about statistics. No, Moneyball is not about on-base percentage and strikeout-to-walk ratios. The Oakland A's (much like the Indians are now) were in a situation where they didn't have the resources to outbid teams for top performers, so they looked for areas where players were under-rated by the market. In the late 1990s, the most undervalued players were those who didn't have high batting averages, but could take a walk. So GM Billy Beane picked up a lot of players who fit this profile at a discount rate. Guys like Matt Stairs and Olmaedo Saenz and John Jaha were picked up cheap, and rewarded Oakland with several good seasons. But over the past couple of years, the word's gotten out, and these type of players aren't as affordable as before. What's the moral of the story? It isn't about OBP or whatever else is in vogue at the time; it's about finding players who are undervalued by the market. In recent years, defense has become an undervalued commodity. More recently, the Indians seem to have concentrated on injured players as undervalued commodities; they have been among the most-lauded organizations as far as rehab is concerned, and judging by some recent triumphs (Jack Cressend, Bob Howry, etc), they have had some success in this area. They have used minor-league free agency well, grabbling guys like Casey Blake, Matt Miller, and Rafael Betancourt for peanuts. What they've done isn't exactly what Beane did in Oakland, but the spirit seems to be the same; exploiting market inefficiencies to grab undervalued players. The Twins are probably one of the most stathead-phobic organizations around, but they do an excellent job in player development and scouting, which they use to their advantage. The Atlanta Braves have rode their tools-based philosophy to umpteen straight division titles. In other words, it isn't about OBP or drafting college players per se; it's identifying what you do best and using it as a competitive advantage. But of course, your organization has to actually do something well in order to exploit it. If you run a small-market organization just like the Yankees, you won't win because you can't run your organization like the Yankees and have success. What works for some teams just won't work for others. The Atlanta Braves probably wouldn't be as successful if they went to a statistically-oriented player evaluation strategy. That's why it's possible to win in baseball despite the disparity in payrolls; teams do things differently. If you can structure your organization in a way that maximizes your chances of winning, whether that be by constructing a proprietary computer system or building a top-notch training staff, you can beat the big-money behemoths. You won't win every time, but that sure beats trying hopelessly to win by emulating the same strategy as everyone else. I completely agree with everything the author points out except for the little dig at baseball tonight, I actually enjoy the show even though at sometimes they do seem a little "less informed". http://insidethecomp.blogspot.com/ Also a few transactions that exactly getting mention on sportscenter. Al Levine is resigned by the Giants to a Minor League Contract Jay Witasick Released by the Orioles Mike Restovich Claimed off waivers by the Rockies from the D'Rays. Also Rick Ankiel was released by the cardinals and resigned by them to a minor league deal I beleive he starts out at double-A.
bbythepier
Anyway, thanks for a job really well done so far...I'll be scouring the Royals' rosters for any help I can give. Royal Blues and Nate Dogg, You guys are good examples. As you scour thru your rosters don't feel you'll get slighted. You have a guy pitching on your staff named Runelvys Hernandez, your #2 starter. I know he has a mean splitter that is not represented in the game. How do I know? I have a subscription to MLB.tv like millions of others, so I have access to every archived game. Pulling a fast one on me will be tough. But a guy like millenium has the right idea. He provides the characteristics of pitches. Hernandez's overall ratings will be based on previous stats or projections. Pitching characteristics can be incorporated in the game without sacrificing integrity by overevaluating off one start. Even some speeds may be a little off as guys still build arm strength. A quote like tonyee's below (who I like) means nothing. Were not rating players on April stats. If we did that last year, Ichiro would have been a .250 hitter. Saarloos and Haren need better stats, those guys are animals. Don't worry. I do my best to keep an eye on everything, not because of this video game, but because it's been my passion for 26 years. The Moneyball Enigma abacus, I'm always interested in different takes from around the country. Just remember that different phrases around the country mean different things. To us here in the Bay, Moneyball is synominous with Billy Beane. When guys like Mulder and Hudson get dealt, my boys and I said "he just got hit "Beane"-d in a game of Moneyball". As far as were concerned, he wrote the book, figuratively and literally. When Schmidt strikes a guy out with his loopy curve, I'll stand up and shout to my roommate, "He just got him with the Blue Moon", because that's about how often he throws it. "Captain Caveman" means nothing here on the streets of S.F., but in Boston that's a different story. Not to dis' the "city on the lake", but the "Baseball Dictionary" has a different translation for every city. No translation is better, only different. P.S. Why does this punk @ss kid have such a "hard on" over Lowry and that change up? Taken from today's SF web site: "His changeup is already the stuff of Giants lore and he hopes to continue in that mode vs. the Rockies. San Francisco has won nine of his last 11 starts since Aug. 3, 2004." If anyone wants to see a perfect example of a CIRCLE change stopped in mid-motion, see picture #1 on http://sanfrancisco.giants.mlb.com/NASApp/...dex.jsp?c_id=sf

bbythepier
has the rock round express lineup problem been fixed? is it even possible to fix in MVPedit? I fixed it in notepad Kraw, Clear the lineup, so the leadoff hitter is the only one left. Then drag him off too, so there are no players in the lineup. Then drag him back on and it should start at 1 instead of 0. If you do one lineup at a time, you can have one for reference. This is what I did, even though I'll never use RR. lilfisch
I just downloaded the roster today and I must say it was a great job by everyone. I only have one problem. The problem is with the contracts. My fav team the Detroit Tigers (haha make your jokes) will only have 4 guys the next year. Is that true, everyone on the team except for guys have 1 year deals? I'm not sure how accurate that is. I tried looking for player contracts but I cannot find them anywhere. Doesn't anyone have any suggestions on what we can do, or do almost all players (in real life) have 1 year deals? thank you

abacusand13south
In this thread you will post all the corrections and updates you think should be made that will better these rosters. Please start posting your corrections, updates, etc. in here so that it is easier to keep track of, so I don't have to look back 10 + pages saying everything that should be corrected. Thanks jbmagicfan for the idea. So lemme get this straight the guy who is supposed to make things easier for the roster creators wants to make a new thread to make things easier on himself? If it will save this thread and keep only one corrections thread going then I wil gladly take over the secretarial duties with no complaints and look thru more than 10+ pages just lemme know if you want me hypp and ill do it with a smile.
