RonBurgundy
So when are we going to finally get these rosters? It feels like it's taking forever! Can't you guys speed it up just a tad? God. And my Devil Rays better have all 100 players or I'm going to be mad and consider not downloading the rosters. But I will anyway. But I'll still be mad! Dude, chill. Be thankful they're even doing this. And if you're in such a rush, why don't you help out?

bbythepier
Thank you, BrewBomber. I will look over your stuff and make changes. Please remember I am rating guys on how I considered them after last season. While I can change a player's stuff based on increased velocity or something, I cannot turn Turnbow into a stud because he's all of a sudden lights out as the closer now. 1) This season is too small a sample size to determine ABILITY and 2) I would have to redo every other team, who I consistently rated as if it were January 2005, not the end of April 2005. THIS NEXT NOTE IS NOT DIRECTED AT YOU FOR ANY REASON. I had typed it up before even logging in tonight, in response to previous posts. My weekly diatribe before the next two teams. My name is not on the rosters, nor do I want it or wish it there. I am merely a contributor to the roster project like the rest of you. Somehow I have convinced llcmac and HypnoxXx to buy some of my suggestions through unbiased tweaks (hopefully). No one expects you to bow at the altar of BBY, just as I respectfully choose not to bow at the altar of GForce, llcmac or HypnoxXx. We are all free thinkers and it works best that way. Sometimes I will make a suggestion on this thread, it will not make its way into the next update, and I will re-suggest it again. My feelings aren’t hurt, so I hope yours aren’t either if something like this happens. Just post it again if you feel we ignored it or missed it. I will not take it personally if you don’t. If you haven’t noticed, there are a lot of potential changes mentioned in the thread. Sometimes the more we see it, the better chance it has to make its way onto the Ultimate roster. Bbythepier: What about AAA or AA or A? What about, what about…??? I can tell we are either garnering more followers or more followers are feeling free to post on this thread. Either way, here is a repeat of my plan I have expressed earlier in this thread. I would guess 90% of the followers of this roster will concentrate our playing in the pros, while keeping an eye on our prospects in the respective levels. Thus, I have spent considerable time with MLB P’s, even down to the 12th man in the pen. GForce’s hitting formulas are SUPERIOR tools to any mod available in determining batting ratings for position players. That being said there is NO formula where you can put in a “2.00 ERA closer†and it can spit out a flamethrower like Billy Wagner and a changeup specialist like Keith Foulke. It doesn’t exist. Pitching rating is anything but formulaic, IMO. That, along with my high interest in pitchers, is why I jumped into this thread and started spewing my BS. After finishing the MLB sometime this week, I plan on going to the minors, CONCENTRATING ON THE PROSPECTS FOR WHICH SCOUTING INFORMATION IS EASILY AVAILABLE (like the BA Prospect Handbook). I will not be spending considerable time on what I call career minor leaguers or former major leaguers in decline. They do not interest me, even in the Giants organization. My main concern with players like this is to make sure they are rated LOWER than the players in MLB, so they don’t get a callup and FUBAR the rosters. I have used a guy like James Baldwin on AAA-Ottawa, as an example He will currently get called up by the CPU and bump a young starter like Bedard or Cabrera on MLB-Baltimore. That sucks. Sure he may get the call due to an injury, but should not get a call for ABILITY. One other tidbit. Maybe it’s because I am only a year and a half removed from a college campus, but I consider my self a liberal thinker (more like the Renaissance, not a Democrat). I question things. So what? I respect Moneyball proponents who use numbers crunched by statistical teams like Baseball Prospectus. But this horse does not exclusively eat at the “trough of calculations†for all my baseball info. I instead pick and choose what stuff I want to use from their numbers spit out of programs like Mathematica. Some may call this hypocritical or “convenient†usage. So be it. For example, I don’t buy the Range Factor statistic when determining a player’s range. For this I would prefer to use a consensus of professional scouts’ opinions and my own eyes, feeling confident to eliminate the name on the front of the jersey when determining this. Or when determining speed, Bill James’ use of triples as a determinant seems flawed to me. What if Ichiro is just a better hitter than a guy like Alex Sanchez and thus gets more 3B/AB? Does that mean he’s faster. I would rather use the % of 2B turned into 3B, to eliminate a player’s hitting ability from the speed equation. Then you could go into park factors since a guy like Matt Holliday leads the league in 3B in spacious Coors. Does that make him fast, that the alleys are a mile long in PT Barnum Stadium? This questioning manner is the same I use towards EA’s pitching ratings, scouting reports and other suggestions. It is just me. (addition, changes, deletions in bold, words in quotes directly from scouting sources) MLB- Oakland Blanton- added tail to “lively†4-seam and decreased control, deleted 2-seam, added curve and change Calero- 4-seam tails, “main pitch is sinking fastball…also throws a slider and occasional changeupâ€, added change, changed curve to slider, increased 2-seam mov’t and speed Cruz- added tail to “whip-like†4-seam and decreased control changed 2-seam to slurve his slower breaking ball, increased change and slider velocity Dotel- way too many pitches, I watched him close a game the other night (against Anaheim I think) and he threw like 14 straight fastballs, made 4-seam tail and deleted 2-seam and change, changed curve to slurve Duchscherer- EA made this guy suck, not so, increased 4-seam, slider and change, added “overhand†curve Harden- think right-handed Big Unit’s repertoire, his change is his split (plus EA made it almost identical to his split, which makes no sense. Just to give him a changeup? stupid), I watched a lot of Harden games and I don’t see the tailing two-seam, just the high, hard gasdeleted 2-seam and change Haren- basically same as Harden except he has an “above-average fastball with good DOWNWARD movement in the 91-95 mph range†deleted change, added 2-seam, I can make a 4-seam tail but not sink, slider is more of a slurve Rincon- decreased control on 4-seam (88 rated?) and slider, increased mov’t on 2-seam, “…will jam righties with the slider to set up a fastball that runs away from them…†Saarloos- all his fastballs tail, made 4-seam tail and deleted 2-seam, decreased sinker and increased change Street- again does not throw a “straightballâ€, too generous on velocity, lowered 4-seam 5 mph and added tail, increased change a tad Yabu- lowered 4-seam a tad and added a change, which is different from his split unlike flamethrowers like Harden Zito- as I said earlier in this thread he is way overrated in game, and I don’t need this year’s start as proof, look at his stats the last 2 years, decreased all pitches Find A’s tweaks and 4 season sims here: http://img170.echo.cx/my.php?image=athletics5yk.jpg MLB- Philly Adams- “…is a sinker-slider reliever…â€, so he has 5 pitches? Maybe back in his days as a starter but not now. Decreased 4-seam a tad and made to tail, increased slider a tad deleted slurve, cutter and change ( a ~5.00 ERA bullpen guy would’ve simmed like 2.00-2.50 ERA with his current stuff) Cormier- decreased 4-seam control a tad, the change is never mentioned so I deleted, fiddled with others to make split and slider his best “out pitches†Floyd- lowered 4-seam 2 mph and decreased control, increased change but lowered speed Fultz- lowered 4-seam 2 mph and control, increased change, lowered curve, added his slider that “he throws down and away to lefties†Lidle- made 4-seam tail, changed split traj. (I said long ago when doing the Reds, Harang, although 5 or so years younger, reminds me of this guy. I used him to build Harang and am thus doing very little tweaks to him. He’s perfectly average) Lieber- has a “sinking, boring [2-seam] fastballâ€, so increased 2-seam and decreased control on 4-seam and slider, gave change mov’t Madison- increased 4-seam 2 mph and increased curve and change, changed curve to knuckle-curve Myers- his fastball “rides up and away in the zoneâ€, so made 4-seam tail and deleted 2-seam, increased change Padilla- so have you fantasy drafters noticed how high this guy is up in the line of SP’s? For back-to-back 14 win seasons 2 and 3 years ago and a tendonitis filled one last year? Please. Deleted all pitches and added change Wagner- good ‘ol high cheese, increased 4-seam 2 mph and deleted nonsense 2-seam, enjoy hitting the triple digit heat, Meat! Wolf- “…short, little slider…â€, “…slider is quick, short and late breaking…â€, best represented by a cutter so deleted slider, decreased control on 4-seam and curve, increased control on change Worrell- everywhere says “fastball, slider, change†so deleted curve, decreased control on 4-seam and added 2 mph, increased movement on “real nice changeup, his best pitch†and slider Find Philly tweaks and 4 season sims here: http://img170.echo.cx/my.php?image=phillies5qr.jpg

bbythepier
Quick update after tonight's GORGEOUS Oriole's game: Steve Reed - Throws around 85 mph. All he throws in terms of fastball is that 2-seam sinker. Does not throw straight at all. Slider/Slurve was around 74. No change-up in site, but Palmer mentioned he has it. Todd Williams - DEFINITELY throws only a 2-seamer/tailing fastball, with an okay breaking pitch. Does not throw a 4-seam straight fastball. His 2-seamer doesn't dive as much as Reed's does, more of a diagonal drop than Reed Oh yeah, and the update for Yankee and Red Sox fans: O's are in first place, we are legit this year. BoSox getting sweeped tomorrow, thank you, come again. Hey guys, how about a little more zingers like Millennium. They are our way of adding a little spice to what can be a boring thread. Millennium, I can see you are determined to get the crafty righties in your pen right, since I skipped them initially because Version 1 didn't have them on MLB-Baltimore. So I incorporated your suggestions as best I could within the limits of MVP and simmed a season. Here they are. Good enough for me. These guys aren't going to scare anyone, they'll just get you out more often than not. Find T. Williams and S. xstrykr
That reason right there is why I want to help you out. Rating pitchers can be, and really is, a pain in the neck, especially when you consider the sheer number of pitchers that don't really get a whole lot of recognition, namely the relievers. Personally though, I feel it's tough to judge any player without getting a whole lot of exposure to them. I don't follow too many of the teams unless they're playing teams that I DO follow, and even then, chances are I won't see every player on the 25-man roster that that particular team has. If I'm lucky, I'll catch about 15 in a 3 game series. And even then, it's not a great indication of how great a player they are. Of course, that's where career stats can come into play - for all players, I think looking at them can be a fairly decent indication of how well a player does, especially when you consider the fact that usually you can see how well they've been doing in the last 5 years. Players could easily have breakout seasons - take Eric Gagne for example: when he was a starter, he usually had an era up around 5.00. Yet after he stepped into the closer's role, his season ERA dropped to around 1.45. But his career ERA is still around 3.50 (checking up on his MLB player page has his career era at 3.29). My thinking here is that being a reliever, he's definitely going to drop his ERA fairly significantly, but I wouldn't be surprised at all to see a "glitch" and see his era ballooning up to about 2.75. Hey, it IS possible - his ERA last season was 2.19. In any case, bby, I respect what you're doing with this project, and I'd love to offer you my help for (ML) teams that you haven't worked much with. Regarding what you're doing with minor league prospects, I think you've got a point there too. As for the updated rosters... as much as I'd like to see an updated version that has a few of the tweaks done up to now, I can wait just as long too. This thing's definitely going to be worth the wait when it's all said and done. :)
bbythepier
As good as GForce's formulas are, he would even admit (I think) that every roster contains what are called "outliers", things that just aren't right despite what the formulas spit out. Over the course of my final tweaks, I will be browsing the leagues for numbers that just don't look right. REMEMBER, I am simming what would be the 2005 season and starting over. I am not simming consecutve seasons ('05,'06,'07...), because this would involve changes in players abilities, which is unique to every dynasty. So look at these six seasons which I captured last night during my tweaks. After looking at these, now look at this page of stats similar to those circled. Do you notice something that doesn't seem right? Seasons simmed: http://img170.echo.cx/my.php?image=caseychange9nc.jpg Real stats comparison: http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/stat...context=batting I DO NOT expect everyone to sim a season start over and sim another season when the next update is released. BUT IF YOU NOTICE ANY OF THESE OUTLIERS, PLEASE POST THEM SO ADJUSTMENTS CAN BE MADE. If Sean Casey leads the league in HR's in my dynasty, I'm going to punch someone. Now I won't take it that seriously, but it would be nice to eliminate as many anomalies as possible.
jbmagicfan
Paul Shuey - Relief Pitcher Indians announced the retirement of RHP Paul Shuey. Shuey's hip was going to remain a problem and his velocity wasn't coming back, so at least for now, he's calling it a career. The 34-year-old right-hander went 45-27 with a 3.57 ERA in 451 relief appearances. Although he spend a lot of his 10 seasons being viewed as a disappointment, he was almost always good when he was able to take the mound. RonBurgundy
By da way guys, for the body types, please change Jason Giambi to athletic, he is not fat, or skinny, he's re-buffulated this year, so yeah, he should be "athletic". Same goes for Dallas McPherson of the Angels, in the last update, his body type is "overweight", it should be "athletic." As a matter of fact, there's actually quite few major leaguers that should be "overweight", Sidney Ponson, David Wells, Curt Schilling(Just his stomach, his legs are somehow skinny), Bartolo Colon, Calvin Pickering, Esteban Yan, and the other grotesquely fat pitchers in baseball...
