Hypno - I PM'd you a while back with all my Brewer updates. Hope you can get these in version 2.0. I sent them all to llcmac last Wednesday (5/4), so I don't know if you were able to get them from him or not. PM me your e-mail if you would like me to send you my .mbe file of players I created for the update so you don't have to take the extra time to create them from scratch yourself.

Thanks!

Woah, I was never saying that Bootcheck is amazing.

And I couldn't agree with you more on Accord and Meredith, I was just trying to assist...Perhaps I just misunderstood your last post, but I was by no means bashing your amazing work.

Texasrangers, that was a full-fledged "Thank you". I couldn't have asked for a better post on your part. As much sarcasm as I spew, that wasn't one of them.

In the future, could you post the article on your quotes. Not because I don't believe you (Why would you make it up?), but because I enjoy reading articles on pitchers. You get more detail in those personal articles than anywhere. Thanks.

BoSox,

I know Miller had a rehab assignment in the minors before his initial start, but lets see what he has in his next start before we go back and "re-rate" him. I'd like to see two starts of stuff to see consitency. Plus, wasn't it kind of a dreary, cold day in Beantown?

The weather was terrible for game two of the series but Miller held it together far better than anyone expected.

At the water cooler:

Low42, jhath and other Cub followers,

Every pitcher has days when a certain pitch is working better than others. It would be very hard to rate a pitcher from start to start when taking this into consideration. But often a marquee pitcher has a “signature†outing or outings throughout the course of a year. I will use Jason Schmidt as an example. Last year he threw 2 one-hitters, one on a cold, dreary night at Wrigley and the other on a beautiful Sunday at SBC against the Red Sox (hardly the Royals or Devil Rays). The teams, weather, and setting was different, but one constant was Schmidt’s pitch selection on those days. It was almost exclusively a straight-as-an-arrow, hard fastball/â€off the table†88 mph changeup combination on those starts (probably 90%), with a show-me curve and slider maybe 5-10 times each start. Those are the kind of games I think of when trying to determine a pitcher’s repertoire. What pitches are their best, what are tack-ons.

So when you and others tell me that Zambrano’s split is “off the tableâ€, I say “Thank you very much†with my fingers, while one eyebrow is curled up inquisitively. I TIVO’d Big Z’s start against Philly and watched every pitch of his and most of Myers, as my roommate told me his BS story of how he shot a 69 on the links . [Did anyone catch Ryan Madson practicing that knuckle-curve grip in the bullpen as it cut to commercial in the 8th?] That start is one I would characterize as a “signature†game. Big Z threw a split MAYBE twice, once to Howard at the plate in the 9th and a runner on 3rd with one out. His money pitch was that awesome 95-98 mph 2-seam fastball that nearly cracked my Top 10, a 94-95 4-seam (one of which was parked by Abreu), a 78-80 slurvy slider (it bends but has little or no “breakâ€), and a few looping 70 mph curves. Whatever Brenly wanted to call a slider or cutter on a few pitches had no movement whatsoever. So when you and others tell me Big Z has an “off the table†splitter, I’m assuming you’ve never been exposed to a Clemens or Smoltz outing. Those are the premier splits in the game, and it’s not even close (Contreras’ fork is way too inconsistent). Big Z’s money pitch is that hard, tailing two-seam. It’s not a sinker, and I don’t see how it can be called one. Want to see a true sinker? Click on TBS on Tim Hudson’s next start and watch his 160 lb. body torque on that overhand sinker. Want a true tailing, SINKING two-seam, think Kevin Brown in his heyday. So I politely disagree with your suggestion that Zambrano has a studly split. When I play against him in my dynasty, I want him to come at me with that dazzling, tailing 2-seam and slurvy backdoor slider, but not an “off the table splitâ€.

Bbythepier’s assessment of Carlos Zambrano and Brett Myers repertoire’s after their dual of complete games, courtesy of WGN (in order of effectiveness and/or use):

Zambrano: 95-98 mph 2-seam, 78-80 mph slurvy slider, 70 mph loopy curve, 94-95 mph 4-seam, 88-90 mph split

Myers: 93-95 mph 4-seam, 81-83 mph power 11-5 curve, 92-94 mph 2-seam, 89-90 mph cutter

I know you know what you're talking about when it comes to pitching, and I do agree with you for the most part. There were several ocassions in the ball game that had me wondering why he wasn't throwing his splitter. His fastball is lively and it is effective, but when he's throwing his splitter with regularity, it's on. I know, I've seen it in a few of his starts this year. I admit I may be a little biased being a Cubs fan and Zambrano being my favorite pitcher, but I don't think it's fair to call it a "tack-on", if that's what you were implying. It's too good of a pitch to dismiss it so quick because he doesn't throw it 20 times every game.

Anyways, I'm going to balance myself off here, and say that Latroy Hawkins sucks. He blows as a closer and he'll probably be losing games in the 8th rather than the 9th now that he's going to be the set-up man. Feel free to lower this guys stuff as much as you want. I haven't been watching him that much to give you any idea of numbers or what's bad, because I find myself tuning out of Cubs games more often than not when he takes the mound. I think he would be a better fit in the Giants pen.

I haven't seen Meredith pitch myself but the numbers seems fair since he's just a AA-pitcher with a hot hand. Even though he's pitching well right now I guess he'll end up at AAA-Pawtucket for most of the season and if he's lucky he might get a august/september call-up.

Fine for me Hyp, with Meredith. Probably AAA talent in AA.

Los Angeles Dodgers

Norihiro Nakamura - Third Baseman

Dodgers designated third baseman Norihiro Nakamura for assignment.

Oscar Robles will join Nakamura from the Mexican League to take Nakamura's place in the mix at third base. Maybe Nakamura would have become an adequate major leaguer if given more of an opportunity, but the Dodgers couldn't wait for him. If he clears waivers, he could ask for his release and head back Japan.

jb,

That swing is better geared for 85 mph fastballs and offspeed junk seen in Japan. And I would be SHOCKED if the Blew Crew kept Erickson as the 5th, and made Alvarez the long relief, while demoting Wunsch when Gagne, Dessens and Werth come back over the next week or two. . I mean SHOCKED. Maybe they'll let Houlton go via Rule V, but Wunsch is a perfect situational lefty. I'd give you Eyre, Christainsen, and a cookie for him. Want Herges back too?

low42,

While we agree to disagree on Zambrano's split, I sure hope our former skipper doesn't run Big Z's arm into a sling like the others. Big Z is a Miguel Tejada on the mound, granted with a little more "rub it in your face". Let McKeon take over Baker's nickname as "Armkiller".

abacus,

I bow to you on your diss of Westbrook. I can no longer defend him.

DMZ,

I feel for you that 2/3 of your core are having horrible years so far. (Perez, Wilson) That being said, I hope you got your wins for the week over at the Snake Pit and are willing to let Tomko pitch another CG win. Please. I rather not see our pen for a week.

You might want to look at the appearance of the more "big-boned" players in the game such as Jason Jennings, Livan Hernandez and David Ortiz. Yes, they're more heavily built than say Ichiro but I say they look way to fat in the game.

I'm sure you guys have already picked this up, but I just noticed it yesterday with your version 1 roster. I plead guilty to not reading this entire thread or doing a search, just thought I would throw this out to you in case it somehow slipped through the cracks. For Barry Bonds' career stats, he is listed as having over 2,000 stolen bases.

Looking forward to enjoying all the hard work everyone has put in. Thanks in advance.

Joe

David Ortiz is fat.

Looking at some clips from yesterdays Braves-Astros game I noticed that Houston SP E.Astacio has grown a goatee. This is such a minor thing but since we're talking about player appearances...

Quite a find there, nojoke! Surprised it took this long for someone to point that out! The lahman's database figures for Bonds apparently didnt enjoy being transferred into MVPEdit as every year he stole 30+ bases, he got an extra digit added and thus had around 7 years of 300+ stolen bases! ick! Fixed!

Colorado Springs Sky Sox

Pitcher Alex Serrano was promoted to Triple A Colorado Springs for AA Tulsa Drillers. He was Tulsa's Closer, now that has been given to P.J. Bevis

Some changes in the Jays:

C Gregg Zaun > 15-day DL (concussion)

C Andy Dominique called up from AAA

C John Schneider transferred from A to AAA

They were only moved because of injury.....
