Win98SE much better!

I installed the game to XP with service pack 2 and had a ton of ball stutter and players animations were not very smooth. After trying just about everthing, I got fed up and uninstalled the game and settle for the xbox version. Today I realized that my enjoyment for the game dropped because of the problems I had on the PC and because I would not get to use any mods. Those portraits are just butt ugly, looks very unprofessional. Well anyways back on topic. I installed Win98SE on a seperate partition and installed MVP 2005...wow, what a difference. The game was smooth and with no problems other then the grass shimmering, which is caused by the sun light. Try playing a game with overcast during the day, does the grass look any better? Win98SE was the answer to my problem, it may not be yours...but give it a try.

Win98SE

Asus PE4 MB

P4 2.4 CPU

Geforce 4 Ti 4600 with Omega Drivers

Logitech Duel Analog controller

PC 2700 512 ram

AF is set @ 8X

I'm running the game at max settings and resolution. Looks good and plays very good...now I need to sell the xbox version.

i can't imagine that being the reason.

but maybe you should try this:

--> tweak the XP setting in SYSTEM > ADVANCED > Performance [settings]

set them to best performace instead of best appearance, this will improve XP itself and help it run efficiently.

then in that same window click on ADVANCED again and on the virtual memory section [change]

ideally you would want to run the virtual memory [or page file] on a seperate physical hard drive [not a partition] but if you only have one, then you really have no choice then.

it is recommeded you set your Initial Size to 1.5 times the size of your RAM and the Maximum Size to 3 times your RAM.

so

Initial Size: 768

Maximum Size: 1536

this should help the game play, and of course this is no replacement for additional RAM, which would help also. 512 has become the industry standard on entry level gaming PCs.

you can also try:

Defragmenting the hard drive, tweeking the MVP options to turn off unnecessary graphics, and last but not least updating your GFX cards drivers.

also ... and this is a big also ... turn off your virus protection and firewall while playing.

i wouldn't recommend this if you are a college student on a dorm network- you would be infected with a worm in a snap... but if you are home and behind a physical firewall you will be alright.

and if you want to turn off the Virus Protection at school just unplug the cat5.

.......

sorry for the long winded suggestions.

RobAtPace, that's a very good post. I'm sure no-one will mind the length of it, given the informative suggestions you offered.

Nice job. :)

The problem is, I have a 400 dollar vid card and a P4 3.2 gig processor. Drivers are up to date. THis game should not stutter at all with this set-up. Unbelievable!!!

Way to go EA, good thing you can't make this game next year cause I wouldn't have bought it anyway.

Actually RobAtPace I have a couple comments on your suggestions..

1. The performance vs. appearance settings have a very little effect in the 3d enviroment. The only time this makes a difference is when using a 2d application within Windows XP with a low-end Pentium III 600 computer (or less)

2. The virtual memory at 1.5 times your system RAM was a good tweak for several years ago. Now, as many users have 512 RAM and up, placing it at 1.5 times that can actually slow your system down, because the 3d application calls for virtual memory first, instead of the system RAM.
