WayoftheBraves
I'm not sure if anyone else has noticed this, but there's a bug that has been plaguing many games I play. On many deep flies and ground-ball base-hits, my outfielders will do the stupid act of backing up on them, meaning they'll run all the way to the ball and treat them as extra-base hits instead of playing them for what they are, singles, or in the case of deep flies, not even catching them, but backing up and waiting for the ball to drop for a double or a triple. This is obviously an AI bug, a big one, at that, and I was wondering if anbody else has experienced it and/or has a solution.
excremento
This is probably an obvious question, but are you fielding manually? If not, I'd say switch to manual. I've only played for a couple hours, but haven't seen anything like this.
WayoftheBraves
I'm fielding automatically. The reason why I do automatic is because the game is so much more realistic defensively. But now it isn't with this bug. Plus my defense isn't great anyway, so automatic is a given. It would be worse if I was on manual. LOL Does anybody else experience this bug? bweight
I'm using manual fielding and noticed something relatively frustrating.. When a liner is hit to either Right or Left field, alot of the times, the fielders when I gain control, aren't in proper position.. That's fine, but if you've ever noticed when fielding, the players always take a quick step right away when you tap the analog stick. Now, when I do this, it causes them to miss the "catch circle" and then the ball goes to the wall... It's not something that happens every game, but usually when it does, it's a big one giving up a couple runs for nothing.
WayoftheBraves
Is there anybody who uses automatic fielding? This bug of mine is starting to concern me. I fiddled with the gameplay sliders, even using Pared's sliders and the problem is still there.

I also use the automatic fielding, but I'm 60 and the old reflexes aren't what they used to be. I do however, have the pitching set pretty fast as I really enjoy the challange. [i was a good fastball hitter in my one year of pro ball]......anyway, I am almost to the end of April and have not seen anything like you are discribing. I would tend to think it may be something with your computer, I may be wrong but, I really don't think it's the game [unless you got a bad copy] Try writting to tech support for the game. hoosier4974
Damn... I wonder if it's just my game... Nah, it's not just your game !!!! I've seen the same thing on both the XBox and PC versions. I use manual fielding on both verisons of the game. It does'nt happen alot but when it does it usually causes a run or two (very frustrating)
WayoftheBraves
Good, I'm not alone! Now to figure out why this happens. Again, my guess is that it's a problem with the A.I., because I don't see what else could be causing this. Singles that are supposed to drop right in front of the outfielder are not played because the outfielder backs up, let's it roll, etc. etc. I was hoping E.A. would've patched it in it's last patch, but that's not the case. hoosier4974
I'm thinking AI glitch as well. After I noticed this the first few times, I thought maybe that I was not perfectly lined up with the ball or on a fly to the outfield that my fielder was not centered in the circle before the ball got there. I started watching this more closely and know for a fact on several of the plays where this happened again, I got the player where he was supposed to be and the fielder just let the ball go past him. He was also in position with what appeared to be plenty of time to make the play. Like I said, I've only seen it happen maybe 4-6 times in the past 12-15 games. But, on several of those occasions it's resulted in a run or more for the CPU or online opponent. I actually lost a game in the bottom of the 9th against the CPU on what should have been the final out to force extra innings. It allowed a guy on first base to score the winning run..... But with that being said, outside of that and few stats being misrecorded during a game, this game is damn near perfect !!! WayoftheBraves
It happened yet again, and this one proves that this is a big A.I. glitch. On a SLOW grounder up the middle by Milton Bradley, Marquis Grissom back up all the way to the warning track, turned around, and STOPPED. He just stood there and Barry Bonds had to come from left field to field a stupid, measly little grounder!!! I've thought about it a lot and I just cannot see how the Gameplay Tuners (sliders) would have an effect on whether the fielder backs up on the ball or not. A.I. glitch all the way. I can't believe E.A. hasn't fixed this yet. :x

It's not something that happens every game, but usually when it does, it's a big one giving up a couple runs for nothing. You need to adjust the sliders for OF and IF fielding when in Manual or MVP mode. The fielders are normally out of position because of a little 'push' the computer gives them towards the position the ball is supposed to go, and this causes them to sometimes be very badly located. The same applies to your problem with the 'quick step' some players take when fielding balls. It was very frustrating to me until I learned the reason behind such an occurrence.
