As an Indians fan, no offense to anyone on the site or in Philadelphia. But Thome should burn in hell.

Sorry, I'm just really frustrated right now, I need to vent.

As an Indians fan who used Thome as a hiter in the batting game this morning, his face needs updated. I don't make request usually but this one needs done. I still like Thome and I don't blame him for bailing.

Hey dont blame Thome for leaving the Indians. He wanted a long term deal and the Tribes front office didnt want to give him one.Thome is not just one heck of a ball player but the man has class.

lets compare, and then see which team you would choose, if you were jim thome, who left cleveland before the 2003 season.

this is the Indians' 2003 roster.

http://www.baseball-almanac.com/teamstats/...=2003&t=CLE

This team is essentially C.C Sabathia (who went 13-9), and a whole lot of (at the time) prospects, half of whom have become good players (gerut, martinez, westbrook, bradley and to a lesser extent cliff lee) and half of whom as of now are major bluechip busts (brandon phillips, alex escobar, billy traber, brian tallet, and other borderline prospects). ZERO (at the time) proven difference-making stars (unless you count Sabathia and Vizquel; I wouldn't.) A miniscule payroll that would make it hard for other free agents to come (2003 and 2004 payrolls were between roughly $34-40 million). And finally, a contract offer from the Indians that was 5 years, $60 million (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/baseball/news/2002/11/26/phillies_thome_ap/).

The Phillies, on the other hand, had (at the time) a stud corner outfield duo in Pat Burrell (coming off a .282, 37 HR, 116 RBI season) and Bobby Abreu (out of 7 full seasons, he had 6 of them with at least .300 batting average, 20 HR, 100 RBIs, 100 BBs, 20 SBs, .400 OBP.). A 2-time All-Star shortstop in Jimmy Rollins, a 2-time All-Star catcher in Mike Lieberthal, and 3 starting pitchers who had been All-Stars (Millwood, Wolf, Padilla). Brand new stadium on the horizon. A $90+ million dollar payroll (Top 5 in MLB). And finally, a contract offer from the Phillies at 6 years, $85 million.

Cleveland was clearly a rebuilding project with very restrictive payroll limits. At 32 years old, would you spend 2-3 years, and possibly longer until you could contend? Or would you go to the Phillies, where there were 9 former All-Stars, at the time 3 bluechip prospects (Myers, Utley, Byrd), a top 5 payroll, new stadium, all on top of a contract that offered an extra year of security to play the game you love along with an extra $25 million dollars?

Was money a factor? Most likely. Thome already made a lot and was slated to make even more, so he probably didn't need the extra cash. But $25 million is enough to TRULY not ever, ever have to worry about money again while maintaining the standard of living he had become used to. Think about it. It's enough to ensure that his children will have a great head start in life. That's hard to turn down.

All things considered, how could he not take the Phillies offer? Don't blame him.

And yes, Phillies fans probably do still boo J.D. Drew. However, do you blame them? Thome was a 12-year veteran, proven star who is a guranteed return on the investment. Drew was a hotshot college player with knee problems who had never faced even a minor league fastball. You think the Cardinals weren't dissapointed in drafting him? In 5 full seasons with them, he averaged 116 Games Played.

uhhh check your calendar - that was 2003

last year it was 86 wins vs 80 - so the tribe without the God that is Thome won 6 less games than the "team of the future" PLUS Thome

I'd rather have Hafner and save millions - thank god for hindsight

heres the one thing i never understood

why do the fans care if the team saves millions in salaries? the indians arent putting nearly enough money back into the team, considering the money they saved by not retaining colon thome finley vizquel alomar williams ramirez and lofton over the past 3-4 years. and when you take into account the amount of revenue sharing money the indians have received over the past few years, you should be upset that theyre not spending money

86 wins vs/80 wins and thats only 6 more games but lets not leave out loses

with the Phills lost 76 vs/ the Tribes 82 so the Phills finished 10 over 500 too the Tribes 2 games below.

We're fine without Thome, one player cannot make a team in Baseball, (see Vlad when he was with the Expos)

Also one player can cripple a team (see Arod when he was with Texas.....don't mess with Texas).

A Rod is a curse. The Year after he left Seattle, the Mariners won like 116 games. The yr. after he left Texas, the rangers came close to a play off spot.

I think its cause A Rod is the kind of guy thats gonna cripple your team unless you are a big market team (Red Sox, Yankees)
