What's your longest game?

I've been into extra innings a lot more in '05, usually ending with a result by the 11th or 12th. Earlier tonight though, I was in a marathon.

http://www.geocities.com/g4lifeuk/boxscore.txt

Read it and weep. 20 innings. I was weeping by the end of it! I loaded the bases a few times and couldn't pull the trigger and get the win.

In the bottom of the 14th, I had men on 2nd and 3rd, 2 outs. Nothing.

In the bottom of the 16th, I had the bases loaded with Derek Jeter at the plate and 1 out. Waited for a pitch even slightly up and hoped to get a sac fly. He lines it straight to the shortstop, who then tags the runner off of 2nd to get a double play.

Randy Johnson had come out in favour of Felix Rodriguez in the top of the inning and was totally drained. I was lucky to get that far with him, he never really had anything beyong the 10th. He started the inning with a ball and 0% stamina and I had to bring in Felix after having at least 4 mound visits throughout the game. He did OK, but his stuff wasn't great, so I brought in Tanyon Sturtze. First pitch and Johnny Damon deposits over the left field wall of my created stadium. Tanyon then struggled, but he was OK after he got out of the inning.

Bottom of the 17th and Bernie Williams and Alex Rodriguez had come and gone without any change. Gary Sheffield digs in and works the count to 3-1 against Keith Foulke. Weak fastball up and in and Gary doesn't miss Johnny Damon's mark by much. Tie game. Again.

Same again through the 18th, 19th and top of the 20th. Tense times, but with no run-scoring action.

Bottom of the 20th inning. At this point, I was in need of a drink and a visit to the bathroom. The game must have lasted about an hour and a half at least, probably more. I was actually having cold sweats after the 13th.

Tino Martinez leads off the inning with a single and Tony Womack, who went 4 for 5, all bunt singles, then came up. I was in two minds whether to press my luck with another bunt single, or try to get a hit. I ended up trying to get the bunt down and striking out after fouling it back on a 2-2 count. Bubba Crosby hits the batters box and lines one up the middle to advance Tino to 2nd base. Bubba came in to pinch-run for Jason Giambi in the 8th.

Situation: Tino Martinez on 2nd base, Bubba Crosby on 1st, 1 out. Bottom of the 20th. A fresh Matt Mantei on the mound.

Derek Jeter comes to bat. What do you do?

Bunt for a hit?

Bunt and advance the runners?

Swing for the fences?

Swing and hope for a hit?

Take everything and try to work a walk?

0-0.

97 mph fastball inside.

1-0.

97 mph fastball, down and away.

1-1.

Curveball, down and inside.

2-1.

97 mph fastball, split between sections 2 and 3 of the strike zone. Derek swings at it, but is just a little late. Makes contact and the ball pops up and heads towards right field. Trot Nixon gives chase and the ball starts to slow down but stays in the air - the ball drops 10 feet in front of Nixon, Tino and Bubba are rounding the bases on contact and as Bubba is crossing 3rd and Derek is between 1st and 2nd, Tino heads into home and stamps on the plate.

GAME OVER.

This one was, by far, the best, most exciting, most tense, most enjoyable, and most annoying at times, game I have ever played. From the modded High Heat 2003, the slider enhanced High Heat 2004, the almost-almost-but-not-quite perfection of MVP 2004 to MVP 2005, this was it. This is what it's about. For this one game, I forgot everything. I forgot the issues I have to deal with outside of my PC. I forgot the fact that I was up at 5am, playing a baseball game on the PC. I forgot how I was probably close to throat pain by not drinking for hours. This was the most important thing my brain could focus on at this point, and I loved it. I even forgot the Yankees ALCS loss to the Red Sox in October up until I was faced with the name Keith Foulke in the 14th inning.

This is why I love baseball. You can't have this kind of tension in any other sport I've seen. Then tension so great that every time the pitchers foot leaves that rubber, there is a chance to win or lose the game. The tension so great that I almost fractured either bones in my hand or components on my PS2 controller from squeezing it so tight when Derek Jeter lined out. The tension that comes with the great game of baseball.

And the ability to seek revenge on Mr. Foulke from the comfort of my own home, 3034 miles away from the city of Boston, Mass.

I love baseball.

Short answer for me, hehehe... 17 innings... lost the game with a throwing error from Joe Randa (from third base to first base, with 2 outs and a runner on 2B).

***** my friend, absolutely phenomenal post. I wish I had the patience to get into such a heartbreaking game like that, but I'm sure my controller would be smashed into a million pieces by the 12th.

Still waiting to get myself into a truly excellent game. Closest I came was Mariners (myself) vs. the Angels on opening day of a dynasty. Winning 1-0 in the top of the 9th, two outs with a runner on 2nd. Vlady hits what should be a game ending pop fly to my center fielder on assisted fielding mode, who proceeds to drop it, letting the tying run in. I was not too happy. In the 11th I let a crappy pitch get hit for a home run, but out of sheer anger at screwing up like that I blasted a homer to tie it in the bottom of the inning. Next inning, another solo shot, and that's game.

Good times.

Yep, he was exhausted. By the time I had to take him out, there was no orange zone at all. I was actually guessing where to press the button from memory!

Yeah, I couldn't resist beaning Ortiz. Twice.

H, not anything special, just my own ones that suit me. I've still to get the walks sorted fully and I might still need some more work on a few things, but I can post them if you want them. :)

In my dyanasty (mets) my first two games of a series with the astros at shea went to extra innings. The first went 13, and the second 10. Weird thing is, kaz matsui won both with bases loaded hits up the middle that probably wouldn't have been hits if the astros hadnt been playing in. BTW, how did you save that boxscore?

I went 15 innings one game and killed my relievers arms, then had a 18 inning game the next day, I used Hudson for 10 innings and had to use my poor relievers again. I didn't get that far but what happens if you use all your pitchers? Does it let batters pitch or what?

no, you're just stuck with whoever your last pitcher is. One time, just to mess around, I intentionally hit about a dozen batters in a row and all my pitchers were tossed from the game. Once I was down to my last pitcher, he could hit all the batters he wanted and couldn't get ejected. I suppose you have to learn somehow. I didn't even finish the game bc it was such a blowout from all the runs I walked home.

The longest for me was in MVP2003 with the Expos. Dont remember who i was playing but it went 21 innings. It was such a long game i had to pause it so i could go to one of my classes before i could finish it.

I had a game a few days ago that went 21 innings. won 4-3 in the bottom of the 21st after having someone get thrown out at home with one out then scored from second on a somewhat slow grounder to right and slid around the tag. used like 7 pitchers, i hope i never have a game that long again.
